Post Processing

Did about 20 seconds of post processing in Photoshop to one of the photos, same as you would want to do with a decent photo off even a higher end SLR. I think the end result is quite good for a phone camera.

Specifically, I did auto-level, auto-color, and auto-contrast, and a slight shadow/highlight adjustment, then resized it to 1000x wide and saved. If you took more time to manually adjust I'm sure the results would be even better.

They look good, and would look even better made smaller.

If you think these samples of EVO photos look good I think we have just solved a mystery. You simply think bad quality looks better than good quality.
Hmm, to each his own, I guess.

But to be clear; to anyone else with a slight understanding of what to look for in a high quality photo these are definately NOT good looking photos!

It's probably been said already, but Apple need software based image stabalization. I find jittery pictures even harder to follow when they are HD for some reason.

still a phone

its a huge improvement, and its a good looking photo for ANYONE taking casual photos

i am really excited by battery claims etc and look forward to getting mine on the 24th

btw, i had a phantom order go through and got a call from the fraud dept so there is a real mess, if anyone has two or three on a single account, look forward to a call from ATT:eek:

Don't suppose you have the full-sized version do ya?

Does anybody else think the video looks a bit choppy when panning? Or is that just my computer?

Edit: Playing it at half size in quicktime makes it less choppy. Weird...

does anybody else think the photos look a bit cartoonish or 'artsy'? The photos are rather soft than sharp, and remind me of that 'cartoon' effect you can do in photoshop.

No they don't. Stop being a fanboy. The EVO in perfect light takes amazingly good pictures. The EVO sucks in low light. We still don't know how the iPhone 4 fares in low light, but considering Apple hasnt bothered to take any and show them off, it can be assumed that it too sucks.

Wow. Do you realize how sad you are? Go to the Android fan sites.

i checked the fps it is 30fps so it meet the specs that apple stated so this must be the actual iphone 4.

I estimate the iphone 4 has a pixel density of close to 40 MP/cm^2, which is the same as regular point&shoots you get today in the market. So, expect similar low light quality! Still pales to a DSLR.

A DSLR takes better quality photos than a mobile phone? Really? Wow, thanks for clearing that up. I'm always in doubt when I have to decide what to use for a photo shoot, my Canon EOS 40D DSLR or my cell phone.

Seriously now, I don't think anyone here is questioning whether DSLRs take better pictures than cell phones or not. They do! What we are debating here is how the iPhone 4 camera compares to other PHONES with a camera.
From the evidence I've seen so far I'd say it compares pretty favorably to most other camera phones out there today. And that's what matters.

You obviously don't know how selective focus / exposure works to bring more highlight details.

Yes, to a point. A crappy camera still won't pick up the fine detail that even most point and click can now.
And explain to me how selective focus and exposure works on an Evo, since that what we were talking about in the first place.

Your wish has already been granted. There is image stabilization in iMovie, Apple's consumer video editing software.

The quality of the 720p video looks pretty good, would hold it's own on a big screen. But both the photos and video look a little "bright" to me.

Maybe it's the field lol

Hmmmm, I stated the EVO takes great pictures in ideal light and awful pictures in bad lighting. Yeah, I can see where that would be misconstrued as being an EVO fanboy. You're a bright one.

And as for that video. Ouch. Great colors, but awful, jittery panning, just like in the official Apple video. Won't be replacing my cheap Flip HD.

What are you talking about? The Apple video has no jitter at all because it is obviously on some kind of tripod. If you could handhold a cell phone like that you must have arms made of steel.

You have already decided off of a promo video and a 9 second user clip that the camera is worse then your Flip HD? Sorry but I think you are just trolling. The Flip HD has the wobble effect when panning just like every other digital video camera on the market, even on DSLR's like the Canon 7D. And this video is panning too slowly to show how much of the jelly effect is present in the iP4.

Also I have looked at a bunch of Evo 4G videos on Vimeo, and most all of them seem to have frame rate issues and are super compressed. Comparing the 9 second clip with a full resolution clip from the Evo downloaded from Vimeo the iPhone clip has much less compression going on. The Evo looks comparable to cell phone cameras, while the iPhone compares to low end HD cameras like your flip or the Sanyo Xacti line.

But we only have around 30 seconds of footage from the iPhone 4 so I guess we'll just have to wait till Thursday.

The video looks great for a phone camera!

The photos are quite good, but I am seeing a checker-board like pattern over the images - kind of like looking through a very large mesh screen. Apple's examples even had this! It was most noticeable in the garden shot with the bridge. Its being exaggerated when it is scaled down, but it is worrisome to me. Still, it will be way better than my original iPhone.

Still don't like photos and videos from a mobile phone... I'm kind of quality freak.
I like the phone but unfortunately I'll never use those gimmicks...

Gimmicks?! There are a lot of people who have point and shoot cameras that have the same quality as this. I'm happy I got rid of my 12 MP Sony Cybershot, the iPhone 4 does just as good if not better. The only thing gimmicky right now is the front camera til the network catches up.

WHOA. You sound insane. How can you think it's unfair to compare a cell phone's camera to a device who's sole function is to be a camera?!?!?

+1 to you sir
