Quality meaning...? There's some things that dont matter, one of them is excessive ppi. Don't fall for the marketing technique.

Every time I pick up an iPhone 4 I think, "wow this screen is way too tiny". When I pick up my iPhone 3G I think "Wow this screen is way too low resolution and tiny"

When I pick up my Droid X I think "This screen is sick". 4"+ is the way to go. I also love how the face of my phone is all screen essentially. It really makes the iPhone look dated in comparison.

I went to the verizon store today to check out the x. Yes the screen is larger but you can't compare the crispness.

Is bigger better?

Droid X is a fine alternative to the iPhone 4.

However, the battery life on the Droid X is horrible. You will see so many people bicker/complain over the iPhone's battery. Wait and try the Droid X out. You would think your iPhone 4's battery life is amazing.

If you use your Droid X pretty heavily (I am talking 1 talking, 3 hours websurfing, looking at the screen every 20-30 minutes just to check), you Droid X battery will be done by 4-5PM. You iphone 4 battery life will make it till 9-10PM.

not true. i did over an hour of talk time, checking screen abundantly, and web-surfing with flash enabled, and stock battery lasted until the early morning.

then again, if you're not content with battery life, you can always get the extended battery, fully replaceable. As I posted on the earlier thread, I was able to get over a day of usage with heavy use.

+1.

I have an iPhone 4, gf has a Droid X. I'd take my phone any day over hers, so I'm a bit biased.

The screen feels _huge_ compared to the iPhone, but it doesn't have that level of crispness.

My biggest beefs with the X are all software-related. It doesn't feel as smooth as iOS (even after 2.2). Things feel a lot more unorganized on Android. OTOH, there are a lot of Android apps that can do "more" than iOS, thanks to better access to hardware, etc.

I think instead of iPhone vs Droid X, you should be comparing Android vs iOS or AT&T vs Verizon. Otherwise, you're kind of comparing apples and oranges. Once you make those decisions, the choice will be clear.

I like the Droid Incredible.

It's light, fast and smooth, and I have no problem finding all the apps I use on iOS, on Android as well... along with some apps that I cannot get on iOS such as Google Navigation.

I like screen widgets very much. Makes screens very useful. You can also set shortcuts to almost anything, including Settings submenus.

I like the way the Android browser reflows text as you zoom in.

I appreciate having a Back key and user flow context. Nothing worse on iOS than having one app open another app, but you cannot get back easily without using the Home key and restarting the first app. It's silly and painful.

I _love_ the highly accurate universal voice input. I rarely type anything any more, preferring instead to softly speak the text. Great for answering IMs. And all throughout the day, I just hit the Search key and ask it questions. Or I use Edwin, a voice in/out app that understands many types of questions. So my phone has become a helpful voice activated companion instead of just a dumb tool.

Flash is handier than I thought it would be, especially with restaurants. Or as with my example the other day, I just pressed Search, spoke "Amazing Race" into the phone, tapped the Video link on the results that came up, was soon watching the latest episode.

One of my favorite things about Android is that you can replace common "Finders" on the fly (they're called Intents in Android speak). Need a better browser as the default? No prob. Need a better photo file picker? Same. Contact picker, MMS agent, whatever. And you can switch back.

My advice to any new Android user:

1) Get an internal extended battery (true for any smartphone).
2) Use www.appbrain.com and its app instead of the standard market.

Handy guide to buying an Android

If you aren't going to be upgrading until January, anyway, just wait until after the Keynote. If there's a VZN iPhone coming, you're golden. If not, go for the Droid X (or whatever else they come up with for the holiday season).

if you're going to buy a phone this late in the year, its better to just wait for the holiday season. im very certain all these carriers will be pushing some kind of phone during that time.

Don't be surprised if an Android phone comes out with Gingerbread or Honeycomb

If a carrier like AT&T bothers you so much, I say go for the Droid X.

It is a goliath of a phone, but at least you are under a carrier that can make you happy. My stepdad used both the iPhone 2G and 3G back in 2008 when he briefly made the switch to AT&T from Verizon. Went back to the carrier that doesn't drop his calls and is loving his Droid X right now.

BTW, I am LOVING Google Voice right now after just setting up my account an hour ago. Free texting and my number is so easy to remember. I love how Google can take care of us with their services and for FREE. Apple is like that strict parent and Google is the one parent that let's you do whatever you want with no curfew. At least Google are nice enough to share its features to all the competitors and that's why the Google search engine is the #1 most used site over Facebook. GOOGLE ROCKS!

I got the iPhone when it first came out in 2007. I also had the iPhone 3g (or was it 3gs? I forgot). But, as good as the iPhone is, and how much I love Apple and OSX, AT&T is just what kills the iPhone experience.

I've been Verizon for over a year now, and I have a pretty ****** phone, and I plan to upgrade to a Droid X in December/January.

But then, I've been hearing rumors about the CEO of Verizon being part of this meeting on January 5th, before the Keynote, and that during the Keynote, supposedly, the CEO of Verizon is going to speak before Steve Jobs does.

Does this mean that an iPhone could be released on Verizon in January/June of 2011?

Is it worth waiting this long to get an iPhone, or have you guys tried using the Droid X?

I've played with it before, and for what it is, some features that it has, is personally better than the iPhone. But like I said, I love the iPhone, but AT&T is the deal breaker for me.

Perhaps you meant to say ATT kills the Iphone experience for you. I find it interesting that because some people do not have good service with a provider that they assume everyone else has the same issues.

I'm not sure what the point of your post is. As the OP uses the word "I" multiple times (eleven in the post you quoted, in fact) and is specifically discussing his own experiences with the iPhone and AT&T, it's pretty clear that he is referring to his experience and not everyone's.

BTW, I saw this wonderful Best Buy promo today. I had a smooth experience buying my iPhone 4 on launch day from BB, so I have no qualms with them.

TGIF: Best Buy Mobile® Launches Free Phone Fridays for the Month of October

Each Friday in October Best Buy Mobile will feature four different free phones with two-year activation. The Samsung Fascinate anchors initial lineup on Oct. 1.

MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Best Buy Mobile announced today at its Holiday Preview event in New York that it is giving consumers another reason to be thankful for Fridays in October: Free Phone Fridays. Beginning Friday, Oct. 1 and running every Friday in October, Best Buy Mobile will feature four free mobile phones (one from each carrier) in all Best Buy and Best Buy Mobile specialty stores, as well as online at BestBuy.com/Mobile. Each week this new promotion will feature at least one high-end, in-demand smart phone. The free promotion phones require a new two-year activation.

“We are seeing an amazing amount of curiosity and demand for mobile phones right now, especially smart phones, and we want to give consumers another reason to visit Best Buy Mobile in October”

To launch this effort in style, Best Buy is featuring the following phones for free on Friday, Oct. 1:

* Samsung Fascinate (Verizon)
* BlackBerry Curve (Sprint)
* HTC Aria (AT&T)
* Samsung Gravity 3 (T-Mobile)

“We are seeing an amazing amount of curiosity and demand for mobile phones right now, especially smart phones, and we want to give consumers another reason to visit Best Buy Mobile in October,” said Scott Anderson, the head of merchandising for Best Buy Mobile. “While we already offer a number of free mobile phone options for our customers every day of the year, launching ‘Free Phone Fridays’ with a great smart phone like the Samsung Fascinate shows that Best Buy Mobile is serious and committed to bringing the best mobile technology and best deals to our customers.”

The specific weekly deals will be announced in stores and online, including Best Buy Mobile’s Facebook page and Twitter account, at 1 p.m. central time on the Thursday prior to that Friday’s one-day specials. The free phone offer requires new two-year activation and minimum quantities will vary by store. There are no rain checks or price matches and the offer is not valid on prior purchases.

Best Buy Mobile has become a leading destination for smart phones and accessories, in part because of the promises the store offers its customers: better choice of phones and networks; impartial, informed advice; straightforward pricing; and someone to be there for the life of the phone.

In addition, Best Buy Mobile offers an array of services aimed at improving the mobile phone buying experience, including:

* Upgrade Checker: A quick and easy service that gives customers the ability to see when they are eligible for their next phone upgrade. When the upgrade time is nearing, customers receive a complimentary reminder call, e-mail or text message.

* Walk Out Working™: Free in-store smart phone setup by a Best Buy Mobile Phone Specialist who will sync personal email accounts, set up Bluetooth headsets, transfer contacts and activate other services to allow the customer to leave the store with a fully functional new smartphone.

^^ I think that is a terrific deal. When I go to the AT&T Store, I pay alot more. I will be referring this promo to my mom who needs a new phone this year and wants a touchscreen phone. I told her to wait for the white iPhone 4, but she doesn't want to pay for another data plan she doesn't use and is already getting a black iPhone 4 (32GB) for my brother this Christmas. I will tell maybe to just wait for the Samsung Captivate to be promoted as free in this deal. She likes the screen from that phone because she is getting far-sighted. Getting it free saves her most of the first year's data charges anyway instead of paying $150 up front at the AT&T Store.

So for you, OP, I say wait for the Droid X to be sold for FREE in this promo! I doubt the iPhone 4 will fall under the same promo knowing Apple's elitist mentality, but we'll see. It does say, "Each week this new promotion will feature at least one high-end, in-demand smart phone." Just don't count on that to happen anytime soon. Might as well try something different anyway. The iPhone going to Verizon won't change much except being on a different carrier and perhaps having less dropped calls for you. Nothing game changing.

^I do like that promotion deal from Best Buy. I'm gonna pass on the first week though, why? Samsung phones are horrible.

I had a Samsung phone with AT&T, and it was garbage. I have a Samsung phone with Verizon, and its the same thing, Garbage.

I'll wait until the last Friday of October. If No Droid X, then I'll probably just end up waiting 2 more months. I mean, we'll be at November by then, and the January keynote will be just around the corner. Plus, I have to wait until December to be eligible to upgrade my phone. So, I wouldn't mind waiting another month afterwards for the iPhone 4 or what not.

But should I just wait for the iPhone 5?

I think the iPhone's facetime is cool as hell, but i hate the WiFi only option. If it was other than that, that would be great. But I dont know.

I'm with Verizon and am eligible for a NE2 now. My contract is up in january. My dream is a verizon iphone, but i'm starting to want a smartphone sooner rather than later, and since there's no definitive date for the verizon iphone, i'm starting to consider a droid.

I looked at the Droid X and Droid Incredible. Based on research (reviews, etc.), it seemed like the Droid X was a better phone, however after looking at them in the store, the X just seemed too big. I couldn't really test putting it in my pocket since it was tied down, but personally I prefer something more along the size of the incredible (which coincidentally is similar in size to the iphone 4). The other thing was for whatever reason the X didn't seem to connect to the web as quickly as the incredible did and the incredible UI just seemed smoother than the X. I guess it's a personal preference, but I like the HTC UI better than the Motorola one.

I wish someone could look into a crystal ball and just tell me when the verizon iphone will arrived (even if it's 2012). That way I can plan what i'll do now (ie, droid w/ 1 year contract, droid w/ 2 year contract, wait til january, etc.) Part of me would even consider switching to ATT next year if the verizon iphone doesn't come out by jun/jul 2011. I'm just getting tired of waiting for a verizon iphone. (I know, drastic measures)

I'm currently considering the incredible w/ a 1 year contract so that if the iphone comes out in june/july, I should be able to upgrade in august (1 year contracts let you upgrade 10 months into the contract). On the other hand I could consider waiting til april when both my wife and my contracts are up and jump to ATT to get iphones.

Jeez for someone who loves their Android so much, you spend an awful lot of time on an Apple forum.

See for me it was the exact opposite, I was on Verizon with decent phones, but their customer support sucked and I felt like I was getting nickel and dimed to death, so when I called to cancel my phone and data plan I got someone who could barely speak English who tried talking me out of leaving and would constatnly put me on hold, then I would hang up and call back to get someone similar. Finally I got so tired of their customer service, and lack of phone options and constant problems with their phones and always having to run to a Verizon store or wait for them to ship me a refurb replacement, I just called and ended my 9 year contract with them.

AT&T has been a dream when it comes to CS, and as far as the iPhone and AT&T's service it has been as good as or if not better then Verizon for me.

I like the Android phones but I just do not like what Verizon does to them, they hide stuff load crap etc.

I was talking to an Att rep at a store last night. His personal phone is the I4 and his work phone is the galaxy s. I asked him for his honest opinion between the 2. He said for him it comes down to OS. He couldn't find the words to describe the difference then I chimed in and said 'iOS is more smooth?' He said 'that's it!.. the galaxy s might have larger screen but you can't compare the OS, as you said iOS is much smoother and it just works... The screen crispness on the iPhone compared to galaxy s you can't compare'.

I'm an adult, which means that I am able to love more than one thing at a time, whether it's multiple places, children, jobs, foods, cars or even (gasp) phones.

Cheers :)

So you think that we should only be allowed to use products from one company at a time? Does this mean that I have to get rid of my Macs because I have an EVO?

You can use whatever you want and peruse whatever forum you like as is your want. I just find it strange that you seem to like to bring up the superiority and your infinite like of all things Android in an Apple iPhone forum.;)

go droid x. you won't be dissapointed.

Uglyness at 10x the size. The content of every single photo looks like *****. Logos and useless text plastered all over the device, Pixelated graphics, horrible colors and convoluted UI...thanks for making a point why the OP should get an iPhone.

So you think that we should only be allowed to use products from one company at a time? Does this mean that I have to get rid of my Macs because I have an EVO?

Yes, yes it does. You are required to send all of your Mac's to me straightaway!

Seriously people, it's just a phone OS. And both phones OS's are pretty cool.
