To make your claim valid, would you like to compare the results of our latest retinoscopy, refraction test, autorefractor and aberrometer test, cover test, slit-lamp test, glaucoma test, visual field test, and dilation tests? Otherwise, you know that your superior eye sight claim doesn't hold up.

Wow dude - you obviously know all about what to expect from a comprehensive eye exam. Obviously, you know all about vision.

Seriously though....

This is comedy. A bunch of people arguing over something that no one can confirm. Sounds like religion ;)

Hey didn't Apple have a recent patent for cold hardened steel? Maybe this is what the metal bits are made from and if the seams are not shock aids -notification lights that would be cool too! Could explain why there's three of them... Not long to wait now - my money is burning a hole in my pocket for this thing!

Get a life

When I was a kid I used to pray every night for a new bicycle. Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked him to forgive me.

The invisible and the non-existent look very much alike... :D;)

The reason for the seams

It seems a foregone conclusion that the final design will have the seams. People can't seem to figure out why they're there, but I think it's pretty obvious. They're filled with black rubber and are there for shock absorption in case of drops. Apple has never liked the idea of ruining the aesthetics of their devices by putting them in an ugly case, and this new iPhone, with the scratch-resistant glass front and back (possibly Gorilla Glass or high-end ceramic) is especially intended by Apple *not* to be put in a case. And it needs a little bit of room to absorb impact if dropped.

Apple has already started to set a precedent for nixing iPhone cases; several months ago they stopped allowing screen protectors to be sold in their stores, and I wouldn't be too surprised if they refuse to sell cases for the new iPhone.

We've already seen these rubber seams on the iPhone and iPad, but they run around the perimeter of the screen's glass and blend in to the black front panel. This is why we've never seen an iPhone with a white face before; the black rubber ring wouldn't blend in to the edge of the bezel, and white rubber would start to look gross as it got dirty. The new iPhone will do the seams perpendicular to previous designs, rather than having a ring around the perimeter of the front bezel, which is why we can now see a white face option.

Seems, separate volume buttons

My thoughts about new design:
If i remember correctly, in iPhone 3G/3GS all buttons and frames are made of solid stainless steel and used as various radio antennas, not just as a elements of a design. There are 6 of them. Seams and separate buttons are needed to electrically separate different antennas IMO. Don't see any other explanation as of yet.

I hope it won't be called 4GS. If 4G stands for the 4G network, the same way as 3G stands for the 3G network, then how does that make sense? There is no 4G network as far as I know. And keeping the "S" would be stupid since the S is what made the difference between the "3G" and the "3GS", so show that the 3GS is faster than the 3G. Now the 4GS doesn't have to show that it's faster than the 3G, since that's obvious. And there would be no 4G without an S so it wouldn't make sense.

I would call it the the "iPhone 4", wouldn't that make sense? This is the 4th major release of the iPhone, the first one was the EDGE iPhone, the 2nd one was the 3G, and the third one was the 3GS...

iPhone 4

No other designation.

What they said ^^. It would not at all make sense suffix the name with an "S", as that stood for "speed", to differentiate from the 3G.

I hope it is named iPhone 4. Not iPhone 4G, not iPhone HD, and certainly not iPhone 4GS.

just look at the website - sheesh

plenty of clear silicon cases on the ideal-case website for the 3g/3gs.

Canada?

He guys, I can't remember what happened after the announcement last year, does anyone remember how long after announcement til availability in Canada?

Thanks

Wow, I'm LMAO at all the time some of you are wasting debating whether some random Chinese case‐manufacturer screwed up their case and covered two buttons. Who gives a #@!*??

Just wasted my time reading through 3 pages of that and had the same feeling.

I for one hope that Apple can price this thing competitively. Currently £550+ for the 32GB 3GS! Assuming they will release a 64GB version to replace the 32GB and will keep the pricing similar/possibly more, it is just too expensive for a phone!!! This is pushing a lot of customer, like me, into a corner to go for an android with better specs, for a lot cheaper.

P.S I hope Steve surprises us with a 128GB version!

lol @ the cases

Some of the buttons aren't even exposed.
Silicone is flexible enough to permit pressing buttons. I have a Speck silicone case for my iPod touch; the volume rocker and sleep button are all covered.

Not a big deal.

So people like obsessing over non-sensical, irrelevant topics. It happens quite often here at MacRumors.

Why would you want to buy something that ugly to put your iphone in?
These cases are indeed ugly but they do provide functionality. I kept dropping my iPod touch (or it would slip out of a shirt pocket) until I caved in and got a silicone case for it.

Ugly, but effective.

Remember: "De gustibus non est disputandum." ;)

How about...
iPhone IV: A New Hope
or
iPad Mini
?

In any case, it's not even very good as a joke since the iPad is not a phone.

Agreed...definitely a joke fail.

I for one am getting tired of all the "next gen iPhone" crap. Just patiently awaiting June 7th and wondering if I'll be leaving Verizon or waiting till Novemberish. Oh No...another highly debated iPhone topic (VZW or no VZW), I just brought it up!
