an updated iPad 2 with a better screen for tech nerds or professionals would technically still be an iPad 2 ;) but i agree, that its hopefully unlikely

The pros don't need a better screen without a more powerful processor to o with it - heck, they need the processor worse. And the processor isn't ready yet. Neither is the retina display, for that matter. What on earth are they supposed to be upgrading?

yes but iPhone return rates are still 30-40% compared to about 2% with the droids, it doesn't mater what it's over reception is just one factor that could cause people to return the iPhone.

I was ready to return my Android phone in the first month I owned it & switch to the iP4. But, Apple doesn't do 4G, yet. And when it does, I'll be there with money in hand.

r u kidding me i was going to get an ipad 2 in 2 weeks now im not too sure. argh those rumors

If you've got an iPad 1, I'd say wait it out. I bought an iPad 1 about 3 months before the 2 came out. After seeing the incremental improvements, I'd say that I didn't lose out. Plus, jailbreakers are having a harder time cracking the 2 on a regular basis. But, if you have no iPad at all, you won't be able to fight the urge to get it. I couldn't. :D

All aboard the trollercoaster! :D

Some of the heaviest competitor has using 4.5" screen, that should be the main selling point of this upgrade. That 3.5" screen on current iPhone is nice, even 4.5" Android phone might looks bigger, but still not having high DPI as iPhone has.

Make it 1024x748 or 1280x720 iPhone with 4.5" screen!!! That's what makes total redesign is necessary, and retina display still make the competition looks bad :p. Too bad if Apple decide to do minor changes and keep the iPhone 4 outer appearance. Not all people care about having dual core CPU on a phone, right?

hahahahahahahaha this is about the thousandth article i've read on this site where "a source" has claimed a possible release date for the next iphone and/or ipad. what a joke, why even bother posting these?

Geesh, what a lame rumor.

Folks, no iPad 3 this year. They just released 2. People had to wait months for that, now they have a 3?. No

It think the source for this has a serious drug problem or booze maybe.

Get him help please.

Friends don't let friends make lame rumors.

In short, why on earth would Apple release a new iPad when they barely just caught up with demand.
Um, because the product is ready to launch? Because they want to fire up sales demand > supply again heading into the holiday season? Because it might be the so-called "pro" model with higher margins (to make Apple even more money)? Etc.

Apple doesn't wait until demand is fading before launching replacement products. iPhone 4 is selling very well right now. Per that logic, why is anyone expecting an iPhone 5? Don't we need to see iPhone 4 volume fading out first? Let me guess- "that's different... they have to launch a new iPhone every year... this one is just a few months late." Macs seem to be growing in sales every quarter, but Apple doesn't wait for volume to start petering out there before rolling out updated models either. They just replace models when the new ones are ready.

Some of us see a "pattern" in 2 iterations: iPad 1 to iPad 2 which happened to launch a year apart. It doesn't mean that iPad 3/"2 pro" must wait for another 12 month cycle before it can launch. It can launch whenever Apple is ready to launch it. If we stick too closely to 2-iteration "patterns," the next :apple:TV (also rumored- albeit more lightly- for this event) would not launch until 2014. One might also argue that this new iPhone would need to transition through G/GS before getting branded with a "5" if we follow the established "pattern."

the rumors are always ahead of schedule of an actual release.
Funny thing about rumors... how they are pretty much always about future product potentials, rather than products already released. I believe the latter scenario will have them called gripes or confusion.

That does remind me of the saying: "the <thing> I was looking for was in the last place I looked". Duh. When you find what you're looking for, you don't keep on looking for it.

i refuse to believe there will be an iPad 3 this year.

*owns an iPad 2*

I don't own an iPad 2, and I will probably get the 3 as soon as its announced, but I second that.

Not only that, I don't see any discounts on the iPad 2 anytime soon. iPad is killing them, HP officially dropped the price of TouchPad to $399, and you can get it at Radio Shack for $325 today!

It doesn't make sense for a lot of people.

When you are the most profitable company in the world, what makes "Sense"? Apple will do what Apple wants. I think they're doing a pretty good job. Sorry if your iPad is already "last year", that's technology for you. How do you think the the 2010 Macbook Air owner's feel?

Enough already. There is NO new iPad launching this fall.

Rumors to speed up release of the next iPad model always sound credible to me. Basically, I think it makes a lot of sense for the iPad to eventually move to a late summer or early fall annual release rather than a spring one. The iPad is a terrific holiday season gift, but a lot of people don't want to buy an Xmas gift that will be out of date in a few months. iPads are also doing really well in the K-12 market (outselling Macs there, I think), which also portends well for an eventual August/September release date. By moving to October this year, they are well positioned to move to late summer/early fall next year when the A6 chip is ready.

I don't know why everyone's stuck on the idea that another iPad release would have to be a successor model rather than just an optional upgrade, such as what I mentioned - an iPad 2 with Retina Display for $200 extra. It doesn't kill iPad 2 sales at all really and allows Apple to reap more profits from Apple fans who thrive on the bleeding edge.

As for the "cheap iPhone" rumor, I think a lot of people are reading that as being low quality. I think it just means a phone that's less expensive than the main iPhone. It'd be a cheap iPhone in the sense that the original iPod mini was a cheap iPod.

 Neither of these ideas seem completely preposterous to me.

Australian iPhone 5 Release IS first week in October.

My best mate works for Optus here in Australia and had a conference call with all other Optus store managers yesterday (27 hrs ago from this post). The conference call was in regards to the iPhone 5.

Firstly, it WILL be an iPhone 5, not a 4s or any of that nonsense.

Secondly, they spoke about most Optus stores (at least in the Sydney) receiving iPhone stock in the last 3-4 days in September, which makes it Tuesday 27 - Friday 30. This means an approximate iPhone release date in Australia of 3-6 October.

Each Optus store will receive an initial quantity of 10-12 of each of the iPhone 5 units. There was no information of how many iPhone 5 models there would be (in regards to possibly a cheaper model as what has been speculated)

Just a side note:
It was not spoken about as to what the specifications of the iPhone 5 would be, nor the design.

The reliability of this information is very reliable. I just thought i'd share.

My thoughts exactly.

Awesome.

...if true. :D

May of next year is my guess
I'm thinking February/March, but that's also possible.

Any rumor that calls the iphone 5 an iphone 4s is bogus.
Apple is NOT going to call the next phone a 4s, they are going to keep it clean with the 5 gen phone on IOS5 IPHONE 5, it would make zero sense to call it the iphone 4S.

I have what is probably Mac #50, running on an OS #10 on a Intel Core i7 processor.

Some have an :apple:TV #2 running on an A (#)4 chip running iOS #4.3

This list could be very long. It's true that there is an opportunity to converge the numbers with an iPhone 5 running iOS5 on an A5, but that could also just be coincidence rather than an "obvious". While I too think the next one will be called iPhone 5, I think that for marketing reasons much more so than the opportunity for 3 numbers to converge.

If such stuff mattered to Apple, my Mac would be known as "iMac 10.6.8" running OS 10.6.8 on a 10.6.8 processor, and the next :apple:TV3 would have to run on an A3 processor running iOS3. Obviously it makes no sense in those examples.

TWO (new) models: iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S

iPad 3

It does seem strange for ipad2 and ipad3 in the same year. A retina iPad would be beautiful!

Maybe ipad2 hd?

Anything, just bring it !

Wouldn't it be awesome if Steve got up on stage and said that he just wanted to say hi, and there are no announcements this time. :D "Just one more thing." A long pause. "Just kidding, we don't have anything. Thank you." :D

next iPhone

I think the next iPhone will be called iPhone 4G just like when the second iPhone came out, it was named after the network speed rather than the generation. It's amazing how many iPhone 4 users think they have an iPhone 4G right now... Some people are so dumb!

Which is just one more reason why they should go with "iPhone 5". Ignorance is bliss, and from a marketing perspective you probably don't want to upset current users based on an incorrect notion that they have when they realize it isn't 4G.

There is a difference between lying to people and letting them think what they want to think if it makes them a happy customer. Apple will never have to answer for it because they've never given the illusion that it is a 4G phone.

Lastly, won't those same users possibly believe that "iPhone 5" is 5G? How does that play out when folks stroll in a store and see it sitting there next to "4G" phones? Oh marketing...

Getting a little tired of this tbh. I totally appreciate this site is called Mac Rumors and so perhaps I should just stop coming here but it seems theres a new iPhone prediction every other day.

Can we just stop this 4s stuff already?

So to be clear the next iPhone will be the iPhone 5. Not the 4s.

The reason Apple even used the term 3G was so that they could denote that the newest model had access to the 3G network. If you will remember iPhone detractors attacks where always based on the fact that the first iPhone did not connect to the 3G network. So to make it clear to EVERYONE that their second phone did they named the phone after the feature. And the iPhone 3G was born.

Apple was then in an odd position numerically speaking with their third phone. Which I am sure would have just been named iPhone 3 if it weren't for the fact that people are dumb. Most of said people would have complained about the missing "G" which would have sounded like this: What? The iPhone 3? Eff that I have the iPhone 3G! It has G in it and is thus more powerful than plain 3. Using that line of thinking Apple said: "Stupid people want MORE letters in the title." And some one suggested "S." Thus, the iPhone 3Gs was born.

This allowed Apple to return to the proper sequential numerical nomenclature.

On a side note the 4s as it's being called is just a testbed phone, one that began as what would have potentially been a replacement for the iPhone 4 during antennagate. It led Apple to realize that the antenna as it was configured could not be "fixed" (my phone worked fine by the way with no more dropped calls than usual).
