4S is the upgrade. No need to go to 5 already. Remember 3G -> 3GS?????

That is because the Iphone 3gs was the iphone 3. it would have made no sense for them to call the iphone 3gs the iphone 3.

The first phone was the iphone, the 2nd was the 3g, the 3rd was the iphone 3gs. Then they called the 4th gen phone the iphone 4.

They have to call it the iphone 5 now and not the 4s because if they called it the iphone 4s then next phone would have to be in iphone 6.

Not going to happen.

The one thing I hope they fix is the glass back, I really hope they go with metal or hard plastic

Eventually they (Apple) will have to go to calling it just "iPhone" like they do with the MacBooks, MBP's, iPods, etc. And just refer to them internally as "6th gen" iPhone like they do with the iPods, or "mid-2011" iPhone as they do with the MacBooks/MBP's.

I'd be interested to see if Sprint and/or T-Mobile's unlimited pricing would change with the inclusion of the iPhone. Or will they just up their rates as the big 2 have done, or even take away unlimited.
I can't speak for t mobile bug sprint all has phones that use a lot of data. The HTC EVO, Samsung Epic and the HTC Arrive all are heavy data phones like the iPhone. And since sprint has been rated the most dependable network before (in terms of when you should get data, you do) I don't think it will he a problem for them.

I can't see Apple stretching the current hardware to an 18-month lifecycle and then barely updating it. They wouldn't have pushed the refresh til September unless we were getting a big upgrade...

Haven't read the entire thread but it seems to me it could be the 4GS as the 3G S didn't change much in appearance compared to the 3G. The S thing seems like it is designated perhaps for minor internal improvements.

I'm enjoying my 20mb download speeds on the Thunderbolt; particularly when tethering. Tethering is faster than my comcast connection. It'd be hard to go back to slower technology.

Apple's going to need to diversify with other carriers to help their marketshare while Android dominates with 400k activations per day and LTE phones.

It's Looking Certain that iPhone 5 Is Put Off Till 2012

i'm ok with a iphone 4s, but please give us a bigger screen!
I'm NOT OK with a 4s.

According to various reports around the web today we are getting a warmed over 4 called the 4S. How disappointing. It's only a minor upgrade with a hold on the iPhone 5 until 2012.

This is very bad news, although I doubt that sales will be affected.

What will be affected is those of us who are not fond of the current glass phone and it's flattened, plain appearance. It's tendency to shatter or crack, and it's silver border otherwise called an antenna.

Just when it looked like we would get a new style, a fresh start, a larger screen and all the major goodness that Apple can bring, they crap out and shelve the 5 until next year.

Apple takes a vacation.

I'd be VERY surprised if it ends up being called 4S.

Look at some of you, all upset that "It's not the iPhone 5!!!" If they sold the same phone described there and just called it an iPhone 5, some of you would be saying "Well damn, I wanted 4G...but I guess I'll buy the iPhone 5 anyways."

And I guarantee you that the bottom 50% of non-techies would buy a 3G over a 3GS if nobody explained the difference to them in terms they could understand. "Oh, so the 3GS is the same phone...but slightly better? I don't need the fancy stuff, give me the 3G."

Do you think Apple would risk confusing customers, downplaying the next iPhone's upgrades in the process, just because they didn't redesign the form factor that much or add the features some of us wanted? Come on guys.

I think right now, it appears that the new iPhone 4S will sport the following features:

1. Will look like a slightly thicker iPhone 4, but the backing will now be metal instead of glass.
2. The IPS touchscreen will likely be 4" with the display going to the left and right edge of the phone (based on portrait orientation). Display will now consume less power than the iPhone 4.
3. Antenna is still the metal band wrap-around design, but the design of the of the antenna won't lose reception quality from "grip of death" situations.
4. Will use A5 CPU/GPU, the same chip found on the iPad 2.
5. Will use "universal" cellphone chipset that works with either GSM or CDMA, including HSDPA+ higher-speed data support on GSM. Will not likely support LTE unless the chipset can activate it through an eventual firmware/software update.
5. 512 MB RAM standard.
6. 16 and 32 GB flash memory storage.
7. Rear camera sensor same as on iPhone 4.
8. Supports Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity.
9. Includes near-field communications connectivity, including full compatibility with Sony's FeliCa standard (very necessary for NFC payment systems commonly used in Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong).

I was really hoping for:

Top of the line speeds compared to other smart phones

64 gb capacity

Better camera

Faster processor

Other than that, nothing else is really a make or break for me. I specifically didn't upgrade to the iphone 4 because they didn't increase the storage. To be honest, if they upgraded the storage alone, I'd go out and upgrade from my3Gs. If not, I will pass this year and wait till the next phone. I'm really hoping this isn't the case. :(

If this was three years ago and there was no DroidX EVO4G or Galaxy S I'd be stoked but its 2011... time for a 4.3" iPhone Pro Apple.

Given how somewhat bulky the HTC Thunderbolt is with its 4.3" touchscreen, I doubt Apple will do an iPhone with such a big screen. Now, 4.0" touchscreen is definitely possible with the iPhone 4S.

Apple takes a vacation? The rumor didn't say the words minor upgrade. It said the rumor said minor cosmetic changes. The processor is going to be a dual core processor and I be willing to bet ram will be too. And you shouldn't even expect a major redesign even next year -- it took Apple three generations to design the original iPhone design. (and btw, minor cosmetic changes could be changing the glass part that breaks.)

The EVO would be a better comparison or the galaxy s which are both pretty thin even compared to the iPhone 4 which ie actually pretty heavy.

Either way, the screen on the iPhone is just too small and the app store and iOS can't make up for that.

This is following with the game plan. I was hearing "iPhone 4G" but I guess marketing had to look useful. Wouldn't be surprised of Steve has a mood swing before this is announced at WWDC and will be either "4G", "4S" or even "4GS" considering how well fed he is that night.

And a pony!

Apple will not allow Tmobile or Sprint to undersale Verizon and AT&T with those very affordable unlimited everything plans...and if Tmobile gets the iPhone does this mean it will be the fastest iPhone?

Completely agree.

I'm not asking the iPhone itself to become bigger, but i'd like a bigger screen that can fit the current form factor. Anywhere between 3.7" to 4" would be ideal. Nothing above, nothing lower.

My Boost rep said Sprint was in negotiations with Apple, but was not happy with the price Apple wanted to get the iPhone on the network.

However he could have been trolling me just to sound informed.

I would love it if the Apple came here. I have an EVO 4G and I love it, but I miss iOS so much. Honestly it just can't be beat. We JUST got Netflix for crying out loud.

Give people factory unlock if buying at full price!!! who cares about the name?
Charging $500-$700 for phone that is still locked to AT&T is retarded and makes no sense whatsoever.

And the followers will buy billions of them anyway. Apple can do whatever they want.

I've held in my hands an HTC Evo. While a nice phone, the width of the phone (based on portrait orientation) makes it a bit awkward to hold. That's why I think the iPhone 4S--it that's what Apple chose for the new model name--will look like a slightly thicker iPhone 4 but with edge-to-edge LCD touchscreen panel (left and right side based on portrait orientation).
