If true about the 4S, OK ... whatever. Dual core processor plus better camera will be nice updates, particularly if iOS5 offers some compelling updates and new features. It will sell.

More importantly, I wonder if a fall release will be part of a new iPhone release strategy. There are new android devices every month. Offering iPhone updates 2x per year might be smart for Apple. Will we now see phone updates every fall and spring? To me, that might be the biggest news in all of this.

I don't buy the "4GS" name. Once they committed to the generation numbering system, the next one pretty much has to be iPhone 5. Otherwise they'd have to go 4GS -> 6, which would be very un-Apple like to skip a number, as it will bring mass confusion amongst the non-techy Apple-ites.

Tony

Yes, because Apple didn't have an iPhone 3G, then the iPhone 3GS before the iPhone 4...

You mean the next iPhone aka iPhone 5 will be like iPhone 4 except better and faster?

I'd like the next iPhone to have good reception. How long is it going to take Apple to get it right?

I would switch to T-Mobile in a heartbeat. I spent two years with an iPhone on T-Mobile; unlimited data (albiet EDGE) that I never had to think about, never had a dropped call, no service problems, price was almost half of what I pay for AT&T.

I really hope they don't go with iPhone 4s, and i doubt they will. They've already set up a numerical naming convention and i don't think they'll change it.
iPhone(iPhone 1)
iPhone 3G(iPhone 2)
iPhone 3Gs(iPhone 3)
iPhone 4(iPhone 4)
If we then proceed to iPhone 4s then it'll just get even more confusing to your average consumer
iPhone 4s(iPhone 5)
iPhone 6

It was a bad idea to market the 3G as the 3G in the first place. I know some people were confused when the iPhone 4 came out thinking that it was 4G.

Sooo... am I missing something... or did Apple do 3G > 3Gs > 4 ?

What would stop them doing 4 > 4s > 5?

I don't think it'll be 4Gs... as well... it's not 4G... that's where the G came from for the 3.

I mean 4S, not 4GS (typo).

Even though Apple went 3G > 3GS > 4, the only one meant to actually be a "generation number" was the iPhone 4. Now that they've done that, if they name the next one 4S, then it wouldn't make sense to call the NEXT one iPhone 5 because the "5" wouldn't mean anything, since it would be a 6th generation phone.

Tony

Did they go from the original iPhone to iPhone2?

3G>3GS was an anomoly.

No. 3G made perfect sense... IT WAS FREAKING 3G TECHNOLOGY! The original iphone was the anomaly.... then it went 3G to 3G's'... for speed.... then 4... now 4's' for speed... then 5... well I think you get the picture.

When the original came out, it was like the only freaking phone on the planet that wasn't 3G... they got rocked hard in the media for it... so they released 3G.

I'd be interested to see if Sprint and/or T-Mobile's unlimited pricing would change with the inclusion of the iPhone. Or will they just up their rates as the big 2 have done, or even take away unlimited.

I'm paying the same today for a Verizon iPhone as I was for my Droid when it came out a few years back. I wasn't aware Verizon "upped their rates".

For those who didn't know, the name "iPhone 3G" does not mean 3rd generation iPhone. It means an iPhone with 3G capabilities.

You learn something new everyday.

The first phone is the screw up, it threw off the entire naming since it lacked 3G and was hounded for it... so they wanted to boast they had 3G technology in the new one.... so 3g > 3gs > 4 > 4s > 5 > 5s > 6 > 6s.

Technically... it will all end with iPhone 5 anyways in 2012... the world's over.

Yes, we all knew that, since it was the second generation phone.

As a T-Mobile user with an unlocked iPhone 4 user, I'll be very very happy with the addition of an updated iPhone 4 to T-Mobile.

My iPhone 4 works perfectly with T-Mobile except for just one thing, the slow EDGE data. I almost switched to Android phones just to enjoy the fast 4G/HSPA data speed, but still like my slower EDGE iPhone 4 better than 4g Androids. And I use Wi-Fi 80% of time any way.

And I do think it's highly likely that Apple will name the new iPhone 4S (or 4GS if it supports 4G/HSPA data). Same thing happened when they launched 3GS.

Why would they call the 6th iPhone the iPhone 5?

According to your logic, they should have called the iPhone 4 the iPhone 3 instead.

Actually, some are saying that May 21, 2011 is the rapture. So this discussion is completely moot. :)

Apparently you do not.... they aren't releasing iPhone 5 the SAME year they came out with 4... they are going to do 4s... then probably go on a 2 a year release schedule.

I mean you act like apple has NEVER changed anything on how they operate before.

Welcome to the intel processor era. And MAC OSX "whatever" era. They change how they do things every once in awhile.

You know what they should do...just call it....

iPhone.

You know, like:

iPod
iMac
Mac Mini
Apple TV

You dot see anyone calling the latest iPod Nano the iPod Nano 6.

Since the next iPhone itself will be completely uninteresting in terms of new technology relative to the market, there has to be SOMETHING to talk about. :p
