So it'll have been at least 15 months since the iPhone 4 and all they're going to upgrade is the processor and camera?

I passed up on the iPhone 4 because I thought the next model would finally provide 64GB, a larger screen, and LTE support, but if none of those are present, I may just have to go for a Samsung Galaxy S2.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8G4 Safari/6533.18.5)

For the love of God, give me 64GB

Good post. Remember this tho, if they name the new iPhone a 4s, when they do in fact bring out 4g... naming the phone iPhone 4G would be the best bet right? It has ring to it...

I really hope they don't go with iPhone 4s, and i doubt they will. They've already set up a numerical naming convention and i don't think they'll change it.
iPhone(iPhone 1)
iPhone 3G(iPhone 2)
iPhone 3Gs(iPhone 3)
iPhone 4(iPhone 4)
If we then proceed to iPhone 4s then it'll just get even more confusing to your average consumer
iPhone 4s(iPhone 5)
iPhone 6

It was a bad idea to market the 3G as the 3G in the first place. I know some people were confused when the iPhone 4 came out thinking that it was 4G.

Apparently you do not.... they aren't releasing iPhone 5 the SAME year they came out with 4... they are going to do 4s... then probably go on a 2 a year release schedule.

I haven't the slightest idea what you are talking about.

I don't buy the "4GS" name. Once they committed to the generation numbering system, the next one pretty much has to be iPhone 5. Otherwise they'd have to go 4GS -> 6, which would be very un-Apple like to skip a number, as it will bring mass confusion amongst the non-techy Apple-ites.

Tony

What? Why?
Why can't they go from 4 to 4S to 4GS (a 4G phone) to 5?

I'm still waiting for someone to chime in wondering when the iPhone will become available on Boost Mobile, Cricket, MetroPCS etc.

With the average app size increasing over the years, I can't imagine them not releasing a 64GB model...

Well, it might be slightly thinner. Then that would be the same basic upgrade as the iPad 2. :)

Why though?

All they did was release a white phone and sales were rather good... why not save the 64GB for the 5, 6, or whatever it'll be... milking it is what apple's better at doing than any other company in the world.

Going from a 3G to a 3GS was a pretty sweet upgrade. The processor speed improved dramatically. I was really cool with being able to switch between apps and menus faster. Plus the 3GS sported the ability to record videos!

However, I'm quite content with my 4 atm. I'm sure I'll eat those words, but with the Retina Display, I'm feeling really comfortable with it. Unless the 4 comes in a 64GB format. I don't know, I don't know if I'll even have a need for the A5 as I don't really test out games that much anymore.

I'm paying the same today for a Verizon iPhone as I was for my Droid when it came out a few years back. I wasn't aware Verizon "upped their rates".

You're right. What I meant was really regarding data. I edited the post, but left the other part in. AT&T has already eliminated their unlimited data, with the exception of grandfathered users, and Verizon is doing it as well. And I'd love to tether with AT&T, but I'm not willing to give up my unlimited plan and actually pay more for less.

I do hope Spring and T-Mobile keep their pricing the same, especially with the unlimited data. They would definitely get a lot of switchers.

If it lands on the Sprint network, any chance of Virgin Mobile reeling one in? $25 a month for unlimited everything on an iPhone would pretty much kill off android phones.

That would be outstanding. I would happily pay the non-subsidized price of the phone to have the current Virgin Mobile service plan. It isn't unlimited minutes, in fact there is only one pool of "anytime" minutes That's perfect for me though, I don't use minutes on an iPhone anyway. I think you're right, that deal would blow any other smartphone plan away completely. For that reason, I can see them not allowing this, ever.

What? Why?
Why can't they go from 4 to 4S to 4GS (a 4G phone) to 5?

Well, they COULD, but what would "5" MEAN? It would be a 6th generation phone. You could relate all the other names at least to SOMETHING - i.e. the 3G was actually 3G, the 3Gs was a 3G with a faster processor and the "4" meant 4th generation. Even though "4s" would make sense because it is the iPhone 4 with a slightly faster prcessor, the "5" would mean nothing really.

Lets the drop the naming arguement

For the sake of making it simple lets just call it the iPhone X. The X will represent the varible of it being unknown sense we cannot agree on what the name will be we can all agree at least for now none of us know what the name is.

I hope that the Software that will be released on the iPhone X will offer some improvements of iOS. Or it may fall deeply behind Android based phones. I would kill for a UI overhual

My dad installed 2 apps that are 2GB EACH on his iPhone. That's 4GB for 2 apps.

I know that's an extreme case, but I do have a few games that are a few hundred MB each. They add up.

No larger screen, no 4G, no 64 GB. The Samsung Galaxy S 2 is looking sweeter and sweeter.

Tony

Only problem is it's running Android.

You can cram all the hardware you want into a box. But the only way to use it is . . . SOFTWARE.

No iOS, no sale.

Rest assured, Apple will continue to sell record numbers of iPhones, to the point that even their older phones are out-selling newer models from the competition (which is happening now.)

Exactly.

I was still on my iPhone 3G when everyone else had their 3GS. I was always envious of them, same as everyone with iPhone 4 will be envious of those with iPhone 5 (*4S)

I'm hoping this happens and by the time the iphone 5 comes out there will be a global chip that works with all carriers.

I would like to get an iphone 5 without contract and be able to change carriers any given month if I see a better deal.

Stop playing with my emotions. This better come to Sprint I've been waiting too long for this and I'm getting tired of this Evo and its abysmal battery life

Yeah, not to mention music and videos. I'll buy it at 64 GB no matter what else it has. Otherwise I'm going Samsung Galaxy S2 for sure.

Um...I guess you haven't seen the latest Android vs iOS stats then. :)

Will Verizon get the 4S ? Even though they just got the iPhone 4... and even more recently the white iPhone 4 ?

I've had a Verizon upgrade since October 2010... and I waited.

And I never got around to getting one... so now I should just wait till September.

All this technical mumbo jumbo about what carriers use is of little importance to 99.9999% of the consumers. I don't care either.

Just tell me the ____ing phone works on the carrier (duh...it should) and Apple, just tell us what the the software/hardware features are over the iPhone 4.

If this rumor is true about Sep, then that's perfect timing for me to move off my 3GS.

But if the iPhone 4S is simply the ability to run on other carriers, I ain't waiting to 2012 to get a new iPhone that actually has new features...I'll move over to the Android in Sept (too bad Apple).

The rumor touts it as the iPhone 4S, as in you take the name of the previous generation and S to signify that it boasts added speed. iPhone 3G became 3GS. iPhone 4 will not become the iPhone 4GS, especially considering the term 4G is already in use elsewhere, albeit without any real meaning.

Makes sense. But if apple would maintain a consistent naming convention, then we would be on iPad1S.

The iPhone 3G wasn't the iPhone 1S...

The S was added to signify that the device wasn't a full remodel and possessed much of the same style of the previous model. The iPad 2 was a complete aesthetic overhaul.

3G cases work on the 3GS. iPad 1 cases don't work on the iPad 2.
