iPhone 4S 16GB: $199 (599 if you add the subsidy)
iPhone 4S 64GB: $399 (799 if you add the subsidy)

The difference is 200 bucks and 48GB of flash.

48GB of MLC NAND costs around $40 (source: DRAMexchange). Now that's the average contract price, Apple will get a much better deal because they buy millions of chips.

Profit margins like that are unheard of in consumer electronics.

What is it about the date that would require a larger screen?

There was a time when LCD screens cost a lot and large screens required too much power to be put into smart phones. These times are gone but Apple seems to be stuck.

iPhone 4S is a solid experience upgrade. Apple is going to sell millions and there is nothing you can say or do that will change that.

What is it about the date that would require a larger screen?

I'm saying Apple had a chance to catch up to the competition in that regard, but it will be another year before they can produce a phone that has the size screen most consumers want. They've fallen behind. If I weren't butt deep in the OS integration between my devices I'd go Android in a heartbeat.

Well said, wide phones aren't for me for sure.

Also, I'll add Androids UI sucks, slow, choppy not smooth like the iPhone.

The fast powerful Galaxy SII may be super spec'd and powerful ... it does not add benefit to the user experience at all ... still slow and choppy... battery life sucks too, as does the lower res screen...

People go from the iPhone to Android and end up back with the iPhone .... people don't leave Android for the iPhone and then go back to Android ... there's a reason.

no offence, if Apple one day release an iPhone with screen size 4 or above, will you consider?

I clicked on google news and the main article says:

"Apple Underwhelms With iPhone 4S"

That's gotta hurt for apple. This is like the first time I've seen bad publicity about an Apple product. Galaxy SII and Nexus Prime will be this years winners. People who buy Apple products are the most likely to be swayed by these types of headlines.

Hmm... Google news thinks the 4s is underwhelming. I'd be surprised with a GOOGLE news article that said "Apple overwhelms our Android", or if Microsoft News said "OSX Far Superior to Windows" or how about Samsung News saying "Apple Like to Prevail Against Our Frivolous Lawsuits"

Your analogy is stupid. It would make sense if you said. "In other news, my blu-ray player won't play blu-ray discs anymore. Idiot...

Actually my analogy makes perfect sense. Anyone complaining that a legacy product can't handle completely new technology is a moron. The iPhone 4 is completely different inside, and just doesn't have the power to handle Siri's needs. I guess that part was hard for you to follow.....

Spilt Milk....

There would have been spilt milk and tears if Apple changed the form factor and all the case makers and accessories manufacturers would have had to change as well... of course!

There would have been tears that shoppers would have to buy it all over again, making their existing bits useless... so who's happy or not?

I think there's a problem with the communication between various demographics; they all seem to believe their preferred screen size is preferred by the global population...
Frankly, I'm starting to wonder where people keep these humongous 4"+ smartphones? Surely not in their pockets? I'm having trouble enough sometimes getting my iPhone out of my pocket.
Could be of course that the 4"+ people always wear hip-hop pants or lug around a bag to put it into :p

Of course they'll buy it so many people's sense of self worth revolves around having the newest apple toy

Or they'll buy it because it's a good phone and they are several models behind.

I love the fact that if Ive had changed the box and the hardware upgrades had been slightly less, many posters on this forum that are now moaning, would be happy. They claim it is a superficial upgrade.

If only I had Siri. I'd ask "please define superficial".

Cool story bro. So your self worth is measured by the size of the screen? Really? I'd rather have a phone with good battery life, makes calls reliably and allows me to run the apps I want. But maybe I'm just funny that way.

For me, a 4" screen would be too big and awkward to hold as a phone.

If only I had Siri, I'd ask it to read MacRumors for me, skipping all the android/windows fanbois that don't have anything to contribute!

We'll AP_Piano295 least it's not like ANDROID "KNOCKOFFS" where you have to buy A WHOLE NEW PHONE to upgrade the OS. Android Sucks period! That's why Apple, is just apple, and we luv it! :D

Actually I think a commercial best but it about non-apple users, no need for anyone to say. :)

Huh. Just upgraded my Thunderbolt to Android 2.3. A WHOLE NEW PHONE YOU SAY?!

And after using every generation of iPhone, I never looked back when I switched to Android. So much more options.

What a lame upgrade. Apple has fallen so far behind Android it's not even funny. Where's the iPhone 5 with the bigger screen?

Where have they fallen behind android exactly? iOS5 is leaps and bounds ahead of android.

What is it exactly about a slightly bigger screen that 20 people on this forum feel is so essential in a phone? So apple should copy Samsung and htc and simply release a slightly different looking phone every 3 months?

I want a 4" screen so my self-worth is determined by that fact?

OK, I really don't get it.

Why are so many people bitching about not having a bigger screen? The iPhone has plenty of screen real estate and is bulky enough already for a phone - why make it bigger?

No, because Samsung and HTC are versatile, fast, and work HARD enough that they can do it in 3 months. And they can do this with far more limited resources.

Apple can't even do it after 16 months and they are the biggest tech company in the world.

A 3.5-inch screen after over 4 years sounds tolerable to you?

My android friends just don't understand that. They keep saying the iPhone alarm didn't work back in January and iPhones have bad signal (antenna issue).
As if android never have one bug or security problems.

However I do understand that they have to go TRY and actually USE iOS in order to notice the different user experience. which they would never do in the first place because they think iOS got all sorts of problems.
