I think as we've all known deep down, iOS 5 is the real update here. Those in the market for an upgrade or new phone, this is a heck of a phone. It's also understandable why many people are disappointed today because the extra delay from a yearly update got people's hopes up a bit for some physical changes (ie bigger screen). I personally don't see anything exciting enough about this new device to upgrade from my iPhone 4 with iOS5. A new physical design phone with larger screen and/or LTE would have caused a lot of people with 4's to upgrade even out of contract, whereas now they will stick it out.

Two annoying things to me about today's events....the find my friend feature. I can't stand when things like that are presented like they are some magical new idea. Also Sri, as neat as it seems, I absolutely don't buy it that it somehow can't function on an iPhone 4. It's an obvious attempt to at least pickup some iPhone 4 owners who want to upgrade for that latest/greatest feature when it would work just fine on an iPhone 4. If you take away Sri, there really isn't much reason for an iPhone 4 user to upgrade at all unless you need a 64 GB phone. But hey...it's a business....I understand why Apple doesn't put it on the 4, but it still annoys me.

Alas, I'll keep enjoying my 4 especially with improved notifications! Looking forward to a future bigger screen and LTE.

Screen size is all that matters eh? This may not have been the upgrade you were looking to buy, but falling behind based on screen size? Seems like a pretty limited metric.

Just go buy an Android phone and enjoy it. That is the great thing about choice.

WOOOHOOO! Gonna be turning my old faithful 3G into a 4S and loving every minute of it...

Now... all you screen size whiners... IT'S A PHONE!!!!
PHONE, PHONE, PHONE!

PHONE needs to fit in pocket and not look like a pacemaker or an erection....

PHONE, PHONE, PHONE... you know... you talk to people on it. Talking... you remember that.... (or maybe you don't). If I wanted an iPad, I'd buy, errrr, ummm, let me think about this a minute.... errrr, ummm.

An iPad!

You're crying 'cos Apple didn't do something that was a figment of your imagination? They'll sell a boat load and you'll have your '5' next year.

My GSII fits in my pockets fine. Why do people keep spouting this bollocks?

Going on Apple's prior experience of voice control, I am not expecting it to even understand proper English, only American! IOS4 can't deal with British accents, let alone the Irish, Scottish and Welsh. Expect Spanish some time in the next decade ;)

Did you watch the Beeb video? It not only understood British accent, if my hearing isn't completely gone, it answered in a British accent. ;)

GPS functions: Andoird phone still offers free full turn by turn directions. That my frine dcosts you and extra $50 (at least) on your iPhone.

No, I got outstanding turn-by-turn GPS for $15 (sometimes more, often on sale for $20): Navigon MyRegion (now owned by Garmin). There are cheaper, even free, options too.

And a real Navigon/Garmin/TomTom app does something Android’s free directions won’t do: work without a good cell signal! What good are driving directions if they cut out when you need them most?

I kind of wanted a new form factor myself but will happily take this one for sure. My home button is trashed and my screen is all chipped up so needed a new one and have been holding off since before June (funny how June turned in to October, oh well) So I'll be ordering one up Friday for sure.

I think the best part is going to be listening to and hearing everyone who was so SURE that Apple isn't going to call it an iPhone 4s. iOS 5, A5 chip, 5th gen phone. IT'LL BE CALLED AN iPHONE5 can we stop with this iPhone 4s stuff that the rumor sites made up!!!! Really?!?! Is that so.......... Yeah you called it! Hahaha

So you're going to wind up with the same issues since it's the same device effctively.

Im confused, on the Apple website, it says

"Pre-order online on 7th"

or call our number.

I rang Apple and asked if it was possible for me to pre-order one over the phone now, and he just said

"I don't know, our Store is down, so I couldnt if I wanted to, and we havent been told anything, call back tomorrow and I might have an answer"

The only reason I'm posting this comment is to get downvoted by the Apple fanboys that fail to realise how much the company sucks for sticking an 'S' on the end of the phone for a 2nd time and still thinks its a revolution.

"Ooooh, its faster!" - So what? Devs still have to cater to the huge iPhone 4 and 3GS market, so there are no real advantages other than your apps loading a bit faster.

"Ooooh 8MP camera!" - Congrats, you're only a year late to the game.

"Ooooh fancy voice recognition!" - Google Voice. Want to see the weather? Tap the damn app icon, its 10x faster.

"Ooooh iMessage!" - Wow, so you want me to ditch the multiplatform chat app I've been using for years for an iOS to iOS chat service? No. Just no.

The whole buzz was for nothing. Apple failed to create any sort of genuine interest. Most consumers of iOS devices (who arent clued up on tech btw) will take one look at it and say "thats an iPhone 4 though? No ty".

The cherry on the cake was the unofficial killing of the iPod classic in favour of Angry Birds capable devices which will only line the pockets of Apple Inc with yet more golden coins.

encore.... wish you ran this forum.....someone is in their right mind here

I was unaware of this one. I'll have to check it out. Still my point is it isn't free.

I currently have a iPhone 3GS so an iPhone 4S is a welcomed upgrade.

I am a 3GS owner too, so this will be a nice upgrade. It appears that Apple is settle on this pattern of new design one year, spec update the next. Most people with iPhone4s are in the middle of a contract, so probably wouldn't be updating.

MacRumors should stop posting heresy, and post the facts! Then people won't be disappointed. Simple.

MacRumors - See the name. Sometimes rumors are hearsay.

Its always like this after an apple event, macrumours has more whiners than any other forum ive ever seen.

I agree. It has gotten to a point that I should avoid this place before and after an announcement from Apple on new products. This place is a great read, but sometimes the complainers really get carried away.

Aside from a bigger screen, what would an iPhone 5 offer than the 4S doesn't? I think the complaints are mostly based on perception. Had they named this phone the iPhone 5, would there be much rejoicing? ;)

The bigger screen would not be higher resolution, just spread out more... and until I hold that in my hands, I don't know how much of a wow factor that would be over the current screen, if any. I certainly wouldn't want a bigger phone, the 4/4S fits the hand perfectly.

the signal downloads when you have data... it doesnt need it to continue running... have you ever used it on android before anyways?>?

First time I am not compelled to run out and get the new iPhone. Think I'll stick with my 4 for now. HOWEVER, I do like some of the upgrades they made.

I'll bet there will be no shortage of 4S phones this time around. Walk in and buy. No lines.

But that's my guess. :)

I agree. For Those who do not yet have an iphone, or who have an iphone 3 model, i think this is a nice upgrade. For those like me who have an iphone 4, i don't think it'll be a "must have".
As an owner of many Apple products, and the bill payor of 4 iphone 4's on the famly plan, I am not interested in using my upgrade at this time. I did stop in at the local Att store last night and played with the sammy galaxy s2 for a bit, but i wasn't all that impressed with that either.

Time to just sit tight and see what new "gotta have" phone comes out.

Ios 5 is nice, but it will work on my Ip4. The camera is nice, but what i have satisfies my need in that dept. The voice stuff seems cool, but i don't use the voice stuff on the Ip4 now, so no biggie.

I am really dissappointed by the same small screen size, but the phone. Have works so well for me now, that i am not sure going Android would make me happier.

Is that really the only reason you feel the iPhone has fallen behind?

How else has the iPhone fallen behind?

Honest questions. I understand people wanting a bigger screen (although, the iPhone size is ideal, since it just about allows 1 handed operation for me), but in what other way is the iPhone "behind"?

I can answer that question. It hasn't.

the iPhone still has the best screen, even though it may be 3.5"
Then, they improved the antenna, which is awesome, and was already awesome. 2x the speed and 7x the graphics performance of the iPhone 4, and hey, a totally new way to interact with your phone. A way that WORKS. :D

Not to mention the meaty upgrades with iOS 5 (iMessaging, iCloud, etc.)

Name ONE android phone that matches and then surpasses these features. There are implementations of voice everywhere, but none of it can accurately understand what most people are trying to say. There are bigger screens, but they don't match the crispness of the screen on the iPhone 4 and 4S. There are dual core android phones out there. None of them match the power of the A5, and no Droid phone has comparable graphics capabilities.

Let's not forget the app store. Does any droid out there have as many apps? TO those of you who are whining, Go on. Switch to a droid. See what happens. You'll be crying to get back to the iPhone.

The amount of complaining, moaning and groaning I've seen today is ridiculous, and totally uncalled for. Rumors are rumors for a reason.

:apple: All the way. Without :apple: THERE WOULD NOT BE ANDROID.

Thank you. I rest my case. :)

Shocker that Siri is amazing.... Apple pushes the industry ahead once again.

Why do all of these Android users come onto a board about MacRumors and spout off all of these complaints about a product they were never intending to buy in the first place? It is just some sort of bizarre, deep-seated penis envy? My screen's bigger than yours, blah blah blah.

I'm looking forward to picking up a 4S, since I've been waiting for a while with my aging Blackberry. Now the big decision - which service provider to go with?

Siri

Siri might be the most industry-revolutionizing thing since the original iPhone itself. If you believe the iPhone has fallen behind, you don't understand Apple's goals at all. They focus on software, battery life, and integration into the ecosystem, not hardware. IOS is the best and always will be. The major announcement was Siri and would still have been the chief feature even if the hardware had been changed.
