I've bought a phone at launch every year, and AT&T has always reset the clock to offer upgrade pricing. I haven't checked, but I'd expect nothing less, especially with two other networks options in the US.

at least for me, I have had my IP4 for only 13 months, and I am eligible. I figure I can sell my IP4 and get a IP4S 64GB for basically nothing.
apple resale FTW, I just hope the prices hold up on ebay.

Does anyone remember when the iPhone 4 pre-orders started shipping / arriving? The iPhone 4 was released Thursday, June 24, 2010. Did pre-orders start to ship on that Thursday? Or did they start arriving on Thursday? I can't remember.

Just curious when if my pre-order for the 4S will hopefully arrive on the 14th or if it will be into the next week.

No it doesn't. 3G retained the same chassis as 1st gen iPhone. So did 3GS more or less. So according to that, the first 3 iPhones were the 1st generation. The only major chassis change came in iPhone 4.

Hold on a second. They named it because 4 was the 4th one, or 4 comes after 3 in 3GS? What if the network technology was called 5G, and the second iPhone was 5G, and third was 5GS, then would the 4th one be 6 or 4? Decide.

Which would not make any sense.

No it doesn't.

Look - the iPhone 4 can only be the iPhone 4 if the prior three were the iPhone 1, 2 and 3. Otherwise the iPhone 4 cannot be called the iPhone 4 in any universe where logic makes sense.

The above is utterly irrefutable logic. Whatever names they were sold under the generational sequence only makes sense this way. You cannot have a fourth generational device without 3 prior generations. QED.

If the iPhone 3GS is the third generation device (which for the above to work it has to be) then the iPhone 4S is the iPhone 5. There is no way that this cannot be true without the naming convention that we are seeing emerge falling apart.

So either calling the iPhone 4 the iPhone 4 was illogical or calling the iPhone 4S the iPhone 4S is illogical. The two cannot both be correct. Thus the naming convention does not make sense.

Wait what ? What happened to the 3rd generation of phones then ?

iPhone
iPhone 3G/3GS
iPhone 4/4S

That's only 3 generations by your own count. How can the iPhone 4/4S be the "4th generation" and be sensical ? Was the original iPhone so great it spanned 2 generations on its own ?

Anyway, still getting the phone.

No, they are both logical in their own because there never was a naming convention.

For your argument to be true, Apple either had to name each of their Phones according to generation, in which case naming this one 4S would be breaking the tradition, or Apple had to name each of their phones according to some fixed characteristic, which is not equal to generation, in which case naming the 4th one iPhone 4 would be breaking the tradition.

But since Apple did neither, they never created a tradition/convention for naming. As long as each name made sense on its own, it worked.

Actually, the chassis of the first 3 phones is almost identical, so they all had to be 1st gen with that "logic" :)

Yous are worse than women - picky picky picky.

I'll simplify it for those who can't seem to read nor care to understand.

The first three iPhones

  • iPhone (known as 2G)
  • iPhone 3G
  • iPhone 3GS

These were named due to their network capabilities (minus the 3GS which was named clearly to show it was a superior model of the 3G).

I clearly said these models were not named due to which generation of iPhone they are and do not follow any style of naming convention.

  • iPhone 4

The 4th ever iPhone so the name makes sense since when released 4G network capabilities was not mainstream it did not warrant any other name other than that reason.

It had a new chassis compared to the older iPhones.

  • iPhone 4S

Technically the 5th iPhone ever released but is clearly a superior model of iPhone 4 as it retains the looks and a lot components so they can keep the '4' and add an 'S' and you can thank the fact it uses a certain percentage of iPhone 4 components and looks almost identical.

Unless you guys do not understand what generation means - if you think of any other product...

i.e. the automobile - a car will be regarded as the same generation even if it receives a facelift.

i.e. games consoles - can be slimmed down and receive more reliable / better internal components, its still the same generation

So technically you could think of the iPhone 4 as the second generation iPhone if you want - no official word on which generation is which exists so its a pointless argument. The naming follows no perfect convention / numerical value but makes perfect sense to me why they would name the new model the 4S because it is identical to the 4.

Apple could call the next iPhone the 1080HD if they wanted - everyone would just reference it to being HD - it doesnt mean they missed the other 1079 of them.

Mountain of a molehill.

do the speakers still suck like always

i agree with macdouche -

speakers on apple portable products suck so bad...

I'm feed up with having to try and "reflect" the sound off of a hard surface from the BACK (ipad) or BOTTOM (iphone) speaker to sound to the people who are - believe it or not, actually in front of the device.

After everything that didn't happen yesterday :apple: Tim, I would have actually been satisfied if you'd said, "and we spent another 30 cents on the speakers to get you better sound" I'm serious!

but who knows - maybe that's an unexpected surprise we'll see in a couple weeks.

Early Upgrade Pricing

Well I just checked that tool and I'm eligible to purchase the iPhone 4S for $450. I figure if I sell my iPhone 4 for around $250, I would be able to purchase the 4S for the same price as anyone upgrading to it using the subsidized price.

Also this means that when the iPhone 5 eventually comes out, I will be able to use my "New Every 2" upgrade and get the iPhone 5 for $200. Not a bad plan if I do say so myself. :p

As an owner of all things Apple (and every iteration of iPhone), I can can understand the slight disappointment in not having a new design. This is in fact consumer electronics and its gazillions of sales and not a Porsche 911, so evolutionary design only goes so far especially with the ramp up of the competing platforms...

What did you want?

I'm just curious to find out from everyone that doesn't like this upgrade to 4S, what were you hoping for? I know a larger screen, but what else?

My BlackBerry, although not on contract anymore, is just used for voice calls, and nothing more. With the much cheaper data plans, I get my mobile email and browsing fix with my iPad2, and reading documents is much easier on a larger screen.

Although, don't get me wrong! I will replace the almost 4 year-old BlackBerry that I have (that's a given). I'm just not in a big rush to do it right now. I have much more important things to spend my money on, especially since the cell phone I currently use is just used for voice calling (Xmas is coming up, finishing up the last of home reno stuff, new kid on the way, etc.) I just can't justify the expense of any new phone right now (be it an iPhone or an Android phone).

I will say, though, that I'm not that surprised. I was expecting some sort of "new" thing (internal changes notwithstanding), due to the 15 month time between releases. Looks like Siri may have been the biggest reason for that, even though the delay led credence to the theory that a new form factor was going to be announced.

Will you be pre-ordering directly from Apple or through your wireless carrier? Anyone have good/bad experiences either way?

Why wonder ? 650, 750, 850. Those are the prices that are advertised on the Canadian apple site (we've had unlocked phones since before you guys had them).

Thanks man! If that's the case, then I'll probably get the iPhone 4s 16 GB unlocked. The next generation and true world phone capability is worth the extra $100.

I need to crunch the numbers, but I am pretty sure that if you get the unlocked, go for a carrier like T-Mobile Prepaid or Simple Talk (Not Straight talk like I mentioned earlier, so confusing lol) and with a plan for $30 - $40 a month, you will save significantly over the coming year, plus of course you are free to walk out any time.

The only downfall? Both t-Mobile and simple use T-Mobile weird 3G frequency, so it will be EDGE-only. But is the 3G speed worth $40 more a month and a 2 year contract?

That eligibility tool only works for a personal iphone.

If you want to check out business iphones you need to go to their PREMIER site and surprise (actually not ATT sucks) they do not even mention any iphones any place.

Not even in the"shop" area.

Checked out Sprint , nothing either

????

buy the Straiight Talk Nokia E71 from Walmart, and use that SIM....you'll get 3G/minutes/text all for $45

Actually...no...iPhone 2G had an aluminum back, iPhone 3G&3GS were plastic-backed and narrower

Material was different but the look is almost identical. My 1st gen is constantly getting confused for 3GS by people who use 3GS.

I'm just curious to find out from everyone that doesn't like this upgrade to 4S, what were you hoping for? I know a larger screen, but what else?

Here's what they should have done.
-Larger Screen
-LTE/Wimax
-Better Battery life for standby, not worse. (1800mah battery would suffice, they probably put in a 1400)
-Edge to Edge screen similar to android devices. theres no need to have nearly an inch of unused space on top and bottom.
-Teardrop shape rounded glass at top for ear comfort when placing phone up to ear. As fun as it is to put a nice 90angle of glass and metal up to my ear id rather have a smooth edge.
-2 speaker output with better design for deeper sound. Maybe consider teaming up with Bose to use some of their technology for speakers.

Here's what they shouldn't have done.
-Advertising the new antenna system as an awesome benefit. The antenna problem was a flaw in iphone 4 design and should have had a fix implemented in the further production of iphones, not a entirely new model claiming it to be an upgrade. This is like Microsoft creating the xbox360 slim and advertising it as an awesome benefit when really it was just a fix for overheating original bad design. (to me this just makes the company look like douche bags).
- Siri is an after thought. It is a software that was already available as an app purchase. Its kind of like how apple included facetime for people to use as an alternative to skype. Should you have to buy an entirely new product just to get it. Seems like a slap in the face to me.
- Slapping a 7 month old probably throttled down processor in a phone that was already fast enough without a bump in screen size to make use of all that power and then calling it revolutionary. Again, a slap in the face to all apple fans.

iPhone 4S, dual antenna switching for sending / receiving? 2100MHz support for 3G...

T-mobile uses two bands to send / receive data. Maybe it will work @ 3G somewhat on T-mobile's network! (receive only 3G??)I hope...

Does anyone know if it supports T-Mobile's frequencies? I've scanned through this thread but I couldn't find any definitive.

They're being sold here in Europe unlocked from day one. The German Apple site says "ab 629 Euro", which is "from $838". Meaning that the top-end model would likely be nearing or exceeding the $1000 mark, which is ridiculous for the extremely small spec bump.

1000$ is not the price of the spec bump. It's the price of 64GB Flash.

Unlocked iPhone 4 would have costed around that much if it had a 64GB version as well.

Btw, does anyone know if the unlocked prices are actually determined by Apple alone or do the networks have a say in it as well? Because unlocked prices change a lot from country to country, even between two countries using the same currency.

. Maybe consider teaming up with Bose to use some of their technology for speakers.

not bose please - :)

bose is barely ok for non-discerning folks with spouses that insist on tiny speaker cubes, but I wouldn't hold them up as an ideal that Apple could benefit much from, except perhaps the brand name.

I whole heartly agree with the need for better speakers through! ;)

Better battery means bigger battery. Bigger battery means less other stuff inside or bigger phone.

LTE means less battery life (which will change soon)

Also bigger screen means less battery life.

Better sound means less battery life.

So decide if you want more battery life or the others. :)

Have they released it June 2011, I probably would have gotten it on contract. What pissed me off is that they delayed it until October, making everyone think that they are upto something bigger than just a spec bump.

AT&T benefited the most from this move from Apple, most people were ready to switch but wanted to wait and see what Apple will do, and yes, for those people, Apple did disappoint.

Wow. I disagree with just about everything you said. I too felt a little disappointed until I stopped and asked myself, "why?" I don't want a larger screen. I do agree that the battery life and speakers could be a little better but there's only so much space in the device and laws of acoustics can't really be defeated. (BTW, Bose has much better marketing than acoustics. I'm VERY glad they haven't appeared on anything since the Anniversary Mac)

LTE I personally don't care about but I concede it is disappointing for all the Spring/Verizon people out there who will be stuck on slow EVDO.

As for the A5 and Siri they are actually faster and better integrated in real world usage than anything Android is throwing out there. Again, that's the benefit of doing the hardware and software. I know, I know that's the "standard" line but it really is true.

Does anyone know if it supports T-Mobile's frequencies? I've scanned through this thread but I couldn't find any definitive.

It does not :-(, T-Mobile will need their own iPhone if you want 3G speeds. Right now, you are stuck on EDGE.

Better battery means bigger battery. Bigger battery means less other stuff inside or bigger phone.

Bigger is one way - other alternatives keep same size and chemistry - but add risk of higher temps by pushing battery.

think the Sony burning batteries - they pushed it alittle too far.

Right now, apple has some of the best battery technology in the industry. They were able to make the thinnest tablet/phone in the industry utilize their battery technology. A slightly larger screen wouldn't use much more power and the proportional increase in battery size with a taller& wider phone would also give increased battery life without making the phone thicker.
