I've been saying the same thing as the lady who wrote that article. The 4S is designed for new customers and for those with a 3GS, not for those with a 4. With 2-year contracts in place, Apple would piss people off no matter what they did.
If they had released a true iPhone 5, can you imagine the number of people bitching that Apple released this bold new product and they can't afford to terminate their contract early, so Apple sucks for trying to force more money out of them?
This year is for people like me. I'm with Sprint, and now I'll gladly be on the "S" cycle of iPhones. Next year is for you people who bought the 4. Every year, one group gets bragging rights over the other. It's like two (friendly) warring camps within the Apple camp.
I like that idea.

dont count on those same data plans you see on their site today...expect the Sprint iPhone plans to be separate and at a cost similar to AT&T & Verizon.
According to Sprint's CEO (and a letter I recently got from Sprint regarding the cancellation of their "Premier" program), the unlimited data package is staying. We'll see how long it lasts, but for the foreseeable future, it'll be there.
They are so far behind in subscriber numbers, it'd take years and years of adding new customers for their systems to be over-whelmed. Plus, the unlimited data is just about the only thing they have over their competitors that would get people to switch to Sprint. They have even been pushing that fact in their latest commercials.
If they ever do decide to get rid of it, I hope to be grandfathered into keeping the plan permanently, as some longtime AT&T and Verizon customers are.
