You have until then to bump my eligibility date from 11/25 AT&T. No Pressure.

I called ATT today....they said they will allow those with eligibility dates in Nov to upgrade on 11/1....I asked if this will be reflected online, and she was not sure, but suggested I call ATT to order on that day (for my wife)...hope this is correct and helpful!

Consider yourself lucky. My wife and I both bought ours on release day but I cannot upgrade until Nov 20, 2011 and she cannot until 2/12/2012!

My wife is so pissed because she's not eligible until 7/1/2012 and I'm eligible now. My recommendation to her was to wait until the next iPhone comes out, so she'll be on that cycle and I'll be on the "S" cycle. That way, there's always a new iPhone in the house.

Edit: Seriously, I got a down vote for this comment? Seriously?? What offensive, stupid, lying, backward, eye-rolling thing did I say to make someone think "Wow, that deserves a negative vote from me"?

Edit 2: Another down vote? I meant to say how much I love you all and how great you look in that shirt.

If I am using the upgrade of someone else on my family plan, can I still pre-order? Do I just need to provide the phone number of the upgrade-eligible line?

Yes...just use the eligible #...I've done it for every iteration of the iPhone...I have 5 lines so each year I have an eligible line for upgrade :D. The only tricky part is if your AT&T and the micro SIM...the phone will be shipped with a Micro SIM set-up for that particular line...you can either take it to AT&T after you get it to have your line put on a micro SIM or you can get a SIM cutter that will trim your SIM card into a Micro SIM. The SIM isn't activated until you turn the phone on...meaning if you get it and immediately turn it on...the SIM will activate and in turn deactivate the other SIM for that line.

I'm lucky...I'm pre-ordering one using my wife's line...and giving my wife my iPhone 4...so all I have to do is put the new micro SIM...which has her line information on it in the 4 and put my Micro SIM into the 4S and my line will activate the 4S.

Hope that makes sense to you.

Well if you are on a family plan that's because you are (I'm assuming) the primary line holder, primary lines get yearly upgrades.

Underwhelmed

Frankly, without the [previously free] Siri, there's nothing here. A processor upgrade (to equal the iPad2) and a camera improvement and we're all jiggly inside? Really?

I really love my Apple products - 2 active MBPs, an Air, a PowerBook, a MacPro, 3 iMacs, 3 iPads, 5 iPods, 2 iPhones, 2 TVs, 3 Airports, etc. - but I guess my hype susceptibility is greater.

You make it sound like the processor upgrade is no big deal. Have you used an iPad 2? It's awesome. Add the new camera and (the supposedly vastly improved) Siri, and it's a great update.

I assume AT&T still follows these upgrade eligibility guidelines:

AT&T Wireless allows these customers to upgrade with no upgrade fee when they commit to a new 2-year contract:

AT&T customers who have had 24 months of cell phone service since activation of their cell phone or since their last phone upgrade.
Certain AT&T customers may be eligible for a cell phone upgrade even if they have been in their current plan for less than two years (24 months), if they commit to a new 2-year contract and meet these eligibility requirements:

* Customer has had a standard calling plan plus data services costing at least $68.99 a month but no more than $98.99 a month, and who has been in contract (and not had a phone upgrade) for 21 months or more,
or
* Customer has had a standard calling plan plus data services costing $99 a month or more, and who has been in contract (and not upgraded) in the last 12 months.

A customer with a calling plan and data services of less than $69 who is 21 to 23 months into contract may upgrade for a fee and a commitment of an additional two-year service contract extension. No upgrade fee is assessed for any customers who are on a month-to-month agreement.

When the announcement was made, i was mainly thinking meh it doesn't mean much to me anymore. Because last December i upgraded to the 3GS for free so i can wait for the next iphone to come out. And also because right now i was torn between the iPhone 4s and the Bold 9900 when my upgrade comes. I was telling myself that the iphone has to of wow me enough to get it, other wise I'm going 9900.

But now that i think about it more, I'm pretty intrigued. And also i love the fact that it's still the same body design........why? because that means you can use regular iphone 4 accessories, all the cases and screen protectors will fit just fine. And normally with how long the 4 has been out, you can get them dirt cheap or on clearance sections. Specs? sure the A5 is great, i do really like the upgrades to the camera, the antenna and iOS. So that's enough for me to get it.

I'm calling it...

1 - iPhone
2 - iPhone 3G (named for connectivity, not generation)
3 - iPhone 3Gs (named for connectivity & speed bump, but can't be a 4 cuz it's not 4g nor forth gen)
4 - iPhone 4 (simply fourth generation, but not 4G, so can't be 4G)
5 - iPhone 4s (crap, still not 4G, but no body update so no reason for generation number hype change, but faster so 4s)
6 - Perhaps iPhone 6 or iPhone 4Gs or iPhoneLTE or iPhone6LTE.

But the only thing the next iPhone won't be called is iPhone 5. Just doesn't make any sense now.

Yes, I agree. I even put it in my signature yesterday so I can be a pompous ass next year and be like "See! I told you so!" then I can cry bitter tears as my comment get 58 negative votes.

Thanks for the info, but I don't really trust anything but that date online right now. AT&T reps are notoriously mis and uninformed around this time.

I have a question for those who have preordered an iPhone from an AT&T store in the past:

Have you had to wait in a line to pick it up the first day? How long was the line? When did you have to start lining up to ensure you got your iPhone on the first day?

I'm asking because I pre-ordered at my local Sprint store (they're doing early pre-orders). I've seen coverage of the insane lines at Apple Stores when a new iPhone or iPad drops, but never a word about what it's like at a phone retailer.

I would ask Verizon customers, but I remember reading that the Verizon response was rather muted since the iPhone 4 had already been available for quite a few months before release on Verizon.

Any insight anyone can give will be much appreciated.

Okay, is this pre-order thing US only or is it Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and the UK as well...?

The article was not clear

Called AT&T to find out about upgrade and they say I'm not eligible until Nov 30. I bought the 4 on the first day of release in the stores and the upgraded us both early. No luck here.. Online and on phone they say we have to wait. Major bummer.. Was looking to preorder.. Oh well

that is the same pricing I got, I think I'm going to call customer service and if they don't allow me full upgrade pricing threaten to go to verizon

I already tried. They only offered to move it up by 30 days. One of my lines is upgrade eligible now, the other on Nov. 18th. So they will move it to Oct. 18th, but by then i'm sure the iPhone 4s will be at a 3-4 week shipping delay. I threatened to go to Verizon for the new iPhone on that line and they said all they can do is 30 days.

iFail, that's all I have to say about iPhone 4S :D

Don't quit your day job to become an analyst.

This will be a phone that sells just as well as previous iphones.

The reason is very simple:

For those whose 3GS contract is up this year, 4S is a big improvement and too long to wait for iphone 5, besides LTE will take a while to be everywhere.

In 2 years they'll get the iphone 5S or 6S

Then there are 1st time buyers and switchers who like the Apple integrated experience.

The current 4 owners will trade in and up, (Not all)

What I don't get is the whining about the size and form factor.

In good design form follows function. The iphone does just that.

Unlike when it all was a new experience I don't see the "must have hotcakes rush to buy"

But, it will sell and well.

If you have an iphone 4, I understand the underwhelmed response.

But as someone with a 3gs, it's really a nice upgrade. The ONLY thing I wanted was a larger screen, but otherwise I did get everything else...

Imagine my feeling. I have a samsung juke dumb phone + pre-camera iPod touch, while all my iPhone 4 owning co-workers are crying over it not being a new design.

My jump in quality would be huge. I want that camera and awesome game performance so bad I that can taste it.

I wonder if one can just buy the thing and use it as a next gen iPod touch? ;)

It is a lot of fun to see a lot of imorons jumping around.
Apple rarely, if not never, wins customer's heart by competing solely hardware specifications. Some simply do not understand how engineering works and how to trade off when making good products.
