I was told by the manager at my apple store if my yellow screen isn't gone by the 21th that they'll refund my money, it's not the money I want, I want the right screen color

At least it is something..
Just buy another one and keep returning it if there is something wrong for the next 14 days.

Doesn't only mean the $200 I paid for? I wouldn't be able too get another phone from them and it'll put me out of a phone.

I also went through this ordeal I would like to share. Got my White 64gb 4S on launch day along with my wife's 32gb White 4S and right away after activating I noticed my screen was much dimmer than my wife's phone. I went into setting and adjusted everything to full brightness and lo and behold mine was dim and yellow. Her phone was nice and bright which kinda pissed me off a bit.

I went ahead and set up an appointment with the Genius bar and showed him my phone and my wife's on full brightness and he agreed right away that this was a problem. Brought a replacement out set everything up, went into setting full brightness and compared it to my wife's phone. This was not as dim but still not as bright with the yellow tint. The genius bar went to the back and checked for another but was informed that they are out of White 64gb. They went ahead and placed an order for another and should have it in a day or so.

Got a call the next day that my phone was in and to stop by and pick it up. Went by after work not having my hopes up and was thrilled to have and perfect looking screen. Compared it to all displayed model and they were exactly the same. I was going home riding on cloud 9 and decided to make a couple of calls. Right away people couldn't hear me. If I hanged up and called again that would usually work. Thinking it was just a fluke I brushed it off. A couple days went by and same thing keeps happening intermittently. I tried restoring, setting up as new phone....reset network everything I could think of so I wouldn't have to return this beautiful screen but in the end after some research on the net there is a known issue where people are having the same problem.

Set up an appointment with the Genius bar again got phone swapped once more. I got there late after work and had to leave really quick so I didn't have time to check the screen. When I got home later and compared it with my wife's phone there it was again that dingy yellow screen. I was gonna be busy the next 2 weeks so I decided to call apple care and just have them send me a replacement. Now finally on my 4th replacement the phone has nice bright screen again. No more yellow with a slightly cool tint. Now I'm crossing my finger that this phone should work as it should. Also for anyone wondering all the phones I have received were C39 serial and my wife's is C38. Sorry for the long post....just got carried away typing and didn't realize how long it was. Hopefully anyone else going through this comes out like I did.

Anyone here have a uneven backlight on their screen, mine is a neutral color but my backlight is a bit uneven

It is pretty clear you are not happy with your phone- just go and get it replaced. You seem to torture yourself, so better go for exchange and enjoy your phone.

At least they replace yours for your yellow Tint, the yellow tint on mine is terrible, and the manager I spoke with told me she couldn't see anything.

Posted this over on the Apple Discussion on the yellow tint https://discussions.apple.com/message/16969710#16969710

Back from my trip to the Apple Store Genius bar. Firstly going at 17:10 on the 2nd Saturday in December is a BAD idea, dear me was that place busy.

I checked in and was immediately deflected being told that Apple Support (who told me that I SHOULD go to the store and get it exchanged as it was obviously wrong and a known issue) "shouldn't have told you that it can be swapped, we don't exchange for yellow screens.". I pointed out that I understand that might be the case but I'm sorry that was not what I was told by Apple Support, after persisting he said would go speak with his manager and after a couple more minutes returned and escorted me to an empty table and told me to wait.

After 10 minutes a Genius tech came over, asked to see the phone and I showed him side by side with my wifes 4 and he agreed that there was a difference and that this time they would exchange it. Thankfully I got a chance to compare all three side by side (4, new 4S, old 4S) and the screen was much better than the previous 4S.

The screen isn't "perfect", it is still a little yellower than the iPhone 4 and blues aren't as blue (like nav bar in settings or Safari) however but it doesn't have the washed out look of my original 4S and at full brightness is much brighter (in a good way) than the 4. Indeed off angle viewing is MUCH better compared to the 4, on the 4 it goes a muddier dark colour. I do think the contrast isn't quite there, certainly on the App name text. Some colours look better on the 4S and some on the 4.

So, so far, its better than the previous 4S and better in some ways than the 4 and not quite as good in others. No idea how the rest of the phone stacks up, I am in the progress of restoring it now

Don't take this blue hue as a real true- it is not the best white ballance for sure. Everything is bluish and the best example is to compare when looking at picture, displaying human skin- you will notice that on the bluish tinted screen human's skin looks very unnatural. The best bet are a neutral screens- best white ballance and color reproduction.

Thanks miragebg, I don't know if I have ever seen a "neutral" screen. Compared to the 3GS, my 4 is quite yellow and took a little while to get used to and the 4S I got as a replacement two weeks ago was yellower still though in a foggy way that really looked washed out and wasn't clearing after being on full brightness and white screen overnight each night. (I didn't expect it to make a difference but wanted to be able to say I had done that if asked).

In some ways the white/grey (colour photo chart viewed on both the 4 and 4S at the same time) on the previous 4S was slightly better. Its an interesting "game" and impossible to know whats "right" particularly when comparing the same photo between my MBP, an iPad 1, iPad 2, 3GS, 4, 4S - each screen is different though with some similarities.

There is no such a thing as "right" when it comes to white color. Everything is up to personal preferences. For me a neutral white can be this what for you is reddish and opposite. The thing is what's most pleasent for your eyes. If you prefer warm and pleasent picture in overall- don't think the cold blue tinted screens will provide it for sure. For me they look very strange and unnatural. I do a lot of photos per day and I can tell you that the warmer ( not yellow, but sometimes even they) screens look way more pleasent and are reproducing very clear and accurate every color of the gamma.

There is a "right" white. There are standards in place for things like this. Without it, printing, publication and the like would be chaos (you get the idea). There is also personal preference. That's what we have here. There is also a clear issue where a screen color is obviously skewed towards the warm side to the point where it's unacceptable.

In short, there is a right white. :)

Even there are standarts for white temperature- our eyes still percieve it differently. I have made many tests and believe me- everyone have own different idea of percieving white. For me the best white is between 6400-6800K. Most of the prefered bluish tinted screens here are probably above 7500K, which in my opinion is way too cold, I mean- ok- whites look whiter, but that's just an illusion..this is good only for web browsing outside as long as cool temperature provides more clearer white color in daylight and sunlight condition. But for the rest of time it is just making more headache and awful colors on pictures. The same is valid for very low K temp. screens below 6000K- they even look worse on sunlight.
So the best bet in my opinion are neutral screens with good balance of usage at every light condition.

Here is my 4S compared to my friend's i4 white and i4 black:

Based on those photos, I think yours look good (neutral). :) The one on the left is too yellow & the one in the middle is too blueish. Of course, I could be wrong with what I see.

I cant tell whats going on with my screen.

Initially it seemed very yellow, and warm... but sometimes it seems blue.

It goes back and forth and depends on what the lighting is like.

Yeah same here.

See my previous posts in this thread about this. Depending on the ambient lighting the phone is in, the screen may appear warmer, neutral or cooler. Bright, natural light - the phone is crisp, clear, vibrant and neutral. Low ambient light/darker, the phone may appear cooler/bluer. Bad indoor light, CFL tubes/bulbs, lots of yellow light, phone may appear yellower.

It also depends on what your eyes are looking at all day for a monitor (your computer). Your eyes adjust to one thing, switch to another and need to adjust. Screens are not all the same. There are variations.

The only thing you need to worry about on your iPhone are obvious signs of defects in the panel. Yellow/red sploteches, drastic screen unevenness, dead pixels, again - obvious defects that are drastic and not normal. Especially - washed out/blurry colors/text. That's a big one.

Other than that - you're fine.

Here are some pictures of my black 4s vs white 4.

White 4 on the left, black 4s on the right.

Would you say my 4s suffers from the infamous "yellow"

To be totally honest I'm not bothered about warmer tones, what bothers me is the fact my 4s seems very washed out.

Not yellow for sure, just a little warmer than your iP4.
How much of capacity your 4S has?

It's a 32gb.

Here are a few more pictures.

Once again the 4s is on the right

It might not show as much in the picture but on the wallpaper the iphone 4 looks much better, my 4s looks washed out compared to it

To be honest reading forums have made me a little ocd, searching for things I might not even have noticed, I think I just need to stop reading the internet and enjoy the phone

With an official 4S jailbreak we can now use "Color Profiles" on our 4S! I don't have a Mac so I haven't had the chance to jailbreak my 4S and try it out yet. Anyone here tried it yet? There's a color profile called "Bold" that should make a huge difference!

Confirmed! It fixed the issue!!!! Well at least to me it does because it made a world of a difference!

Why can't apple add an official option for this in iOS? They do it on osX after all. It would make a lot of frustated users happy again and it could avoid money loss for apple (a lot less returns to apple stores)
