I exchanged my black 16GB DNP for a white one - C39. For my opinion the white ones are generally better quality. Front camera is way better than my previous on black one. I don't have echo effect and noise in the earpiece on the white one. The screen has amazing contrast, it's a bit warmer but the colors just pop up, the blacks are real black, on my previous black unit the black color was more like dark grey.
The only problem I have now is that the screen is very slighty dimmer on top left part, but not much. The even white is my first demand, but I saw every units in Apple Store and those which had very good and even ilumination were with poor contrast and somehow washed out. This one I got have a brilliant color reproduction.

Fully agreed but how many exchanges does one need to go through to get a good one?

I'm on my second so far (exchanged for a different problem) and it looks the same as the first one. Completely different serial numbers (DN for first C3 for second). There have been posts by some saying they got a good one immediately, others who still have yellower screens after 4-5 exchanges.

I understand. I went through 15 different exchanges with my iPhone 3GS because of the horrible screen. Granted, I think some of those times I was just exchanging because I thought there was a problem and didn't give it enough time to "burn in". So most of those were excessive.

Honestly, Apple Care is your best bet. That's where I got my awesome 4 from. My 4S came from the Apple Store.

Thanks AbSoluTc,

I actually had a similar problem to you with the 3GS, though not so many exchanges. In the end I had wished I hadn't exchanged it at all (original reason was that the case cracked at the Dock connector, a year on and the replacement has now also done the same thing) as I lost a great screen (which was yellower than the very cool blue I ended up with) with good contrast, tried changing and ended up with some that had dead pixels, dust under the screen and what not.

The replacement 4S I have came from the Apple store, hadn't considered trying Apple Care though partly because I would want advanced replacement over sending back and getting a replacement. (I don't have the additional AppleCare, at least not yet and no AppleCare+ here in Germany)

Also not sure if its worth waiting a month or two for them to hopefully address the problem (albeit quietly) though by then its more likely to be a refurb unit than a new unit by that point (though not necessarily a bad thing).

There are times I can deal with the colour difference / extra brightness / lower contrast and others I can't, usually when I hit a colour that I "know" should be something else. (Purple for instance, in the Weather app).

An aside but the extra brightness was something that actually bothered my eyes when I first got the 3GS compared to the 2G. I found I couldn't use it in the dark in my bedroom like I could with the 2G, as even at lowest brightness it was still too much.

How can I know if I have yellow screen?
My screen looks a bit warmer and when compared to the other phones in Apple Store- mine looks warmer, but with better contrast and white color pops up more ( looks like mine have deeper white color, if you understand me). Only two units there were brighter than mine, with more blue tint to their white color.
Are you talking here about extreme yellow where everything is cover by it, or just about warmer screens?

I find my 4S is spot on in terms of color temp. White without any r,g or b push thy I can see.

I got off the phone with apple care about 30 mins ago and I asked about the yellow screen and what they told me is it's the glue inside melting to the screen, and the yellow tint should be gone in about 2 to 3 weeks, I got a replacement phone yesterday.

Typical Apple Customer Sevice BS, I've had mine since October 14 and has it changed? No sir, not one bit. Doesn't bother me as much no more, I just want a higher contrast ratio and I won't settle till I find one that has it.

I myself can't stand the yellow screen , paying so much a month and the price I paid for the phone it better be too my liking.

Anyone had resistance in the Apple store while trying to get a replacement due to 'yellowgate'?

Depends what you mean by "resistance". I've had numerous employees tell me there's NO issue, that the screen is meant to be like this, that it's the glue behind the screen, that pigs fly and that Obama is white.

Overall I'm not happy at all with the services I've gotten from the Stupid (not Genius) employees.

I would say that is resistance. Did they end up changing out your phone?

How does this compare?

i just bought one for christmas and we set it up in the store and it was clearly more yellow than my iphone 4 that kinda looks blueish.

It isn't really that noticeable but when compared side by side with my iphone 4 you can really tell.

we talked about it and he said use it for a week or so and if you still think its bad within 14 days you can return it for another one and when i said it was going to be a christmas present he said i got until january to return it.

How does this compare?

Are they both 4S? If so, the left one def. has the yellow hue and it's ugly as hell... The right one, if it's a 4S def. looks better. That's how mine looks like right now and like I said before - I wish it had a higher contrast ratio.

That's my main issue right now, the contrast just isn't up to par with the 4 and the rest of the phones out there.

Both 4S's. The yellow one just came in yesterday as a replacement to a 4S with a dead pixel. The rep said restore the phone, see if it goes away, why are they so dense sometimes? Not only is it yellow, its less sharp also.

LOL restore the phone to see if it goes away? Does Apple perform any type of "technical" common sense test on these idiots before they're hired? That has to be one of the dumbest response ever to a dead pixel and/or yellow screen.

What's next? My finger was cut off and my doctor will tell me to sleep on it to see if it grows back?

Here's some updated pics of my comparison... Again as you will see my 4S has a yellow hue while the 4 has a nice color to it with way better contrast, I highlighted what I mean by the contrast - check it out:

Keep in mind that both phones are set to 100% Brightness with Auto-Brightness OFF.

I have a Idiot-Bar appointment after work here so we'll see if they have a new batch of 4S available for an exchange, if not my last resort is calling Apple Support and having it replaced that way instead.

I just had mine replaced today via Fedex for the yellow hue. New one is the slightly blueish. It's much better and the whites are whiter.

Here is what mine looked like before the exchange.

IME, calling support is much easier. If you don't have Applecare they will charge you $29 for the shipping unless you argue hard enough.

So the new one is on the right and the old on the left? Correct?

Can you let us know what the idiot bar says I'm going thought the same thing also.

After my 12th replacement- my phone is already perfect with the same tint as yours iP4 showed here.
The best illumination I have seen on iPhone the brightest screen among all at Apple Store. No visible LEDs on top. But as I said- I went through 12..
This one is black 16GB DNP, week 47.
No one of the white versions were with good tint- all were yellow (C37, C39, DNR- which I had a chance to look closer)

So your on your 12th replacement and you finally got a good one? How did you find out about all the white replacements when you have black.
