Feels like the hardware team took a vacation while the iOS devs made Siri. Lame strategy.

My guess is that the hardware team was working on this next iPhone. The iPhone that a lot of people thought they would get this time around.

Ditto. That story was real BS. Any power savings from having less RAM are instantly negated by having to redownload images over WiFi and especially 3G. Plus, kicking apps out of RAM means they have to re-initialize themselves, burning more CPU cycles.

Have you seen this as a matter of fact? Have you verified it with real hardware? If not, do you have software simulations that show the battery consumption is actually increased with 512MB of memory?

of course not. he's just talking about of his butt. actually, whining out of his butt.

Utilizing the "teardown"

Although the new iPhone has been announced, I believe it is still vital to perform the teardown. Teardowns prove what the phone is really made out of and allows consumers to be aware of what they are purchasing. Teardowns make creates such as apple strive to make the best product they can without just "filling space". Therefore I believe the teardown experts provide an important role of technological development and consumer awareness.

Article about less ram being necessary for better battery life is nonsense. Samsung isn't having problems with 1gb and better battery life than the iPhone.

Nonsense?

Do you have any hard test information on the actual standby time of the top-end Samsung phone versus the iPhone 4S? How many days/weeks difference?

An extra day of standby makes a big difference to some mobile users.

An article from 2007 showed power consumption of 5 Watt per GB; that's the best that I could find quickly. Obviously we should have better power consumption today. The iPhone 4 battery supposedly had 5.25 Watt hours. So even half a watt would be quite bad.

Yay, iPhone parts

and/or Maps checkerboards among a plethora of other indisputable reasons 1gb would only have been a good thing.

Article about less ram being necessary for better battery life is nonsense. Samsung isn't having problems with 1gb and better battery life than the iPhone. After 18 months "in-development" the iPhone 4S is using a downclocked ipad2 processor with ipad1 ram. I love Apple but you've gotta be truly brainwashed to be trying to say this is a good thing or "no problem". Apple stagnates development, Google ramps up. We'll see what happens.

Android phones have a history of having terrible battery life in real world usage. I know because I use them at work everyday, including Samsung Android phones.

Let's get a few facts straight here. The RAM in the iPhone 4S is 512 MB just like the iPad 2. The iPad 1 had 256 MB. Are you a hardware engineer that has experience with building cell phones and can state for sure that the amount of RAM does not have an effect on battery life? I thought so.

Google must be on vacation because no one at Google is vetting the Android market place apps for malware. Didn't it take Google 2 years to come out with their next phone capable OS after Android 2.0.

iFixit has already begun a high-quality teardown of the iPhone 4S, and while a considerable number of the internal parts have already been seen in leaked parts prior to the device's launch, a more thorough look at the individual components should provide some interesting details on the device.

The teardown is still just getting underway, with iFixit's technicians having opened up the device, examined the battery and pulled out the logic board, but we'll update this post with additional information as the teardown progresses.

Items of interest:

- The baseband chip is a previously-undisclosed Qualcomm MDM6610, an apparent variation of the MDM6600 used in the CDMA iPhone 4 and other devices. It is unclear at this time what differentiates the MDM6610 from the MDM6600.

Now we are reporting teardowns underway?

That was wacky...

Had page 2 for a bit with a close-up of the A5, then refreshed and there was no page 2 (re-directed to page 1) and now when I force by typing "2" at the end of the URL there is page 2 with a new image…

I wonder what the "oops" was that made the team re-boot the page…

Turns out that image was Step 8, now on page 1.

Lets see what's inside iPhone 4S

- A5 Application Processor: Samsung
- IPS/Retina Display: LG
- Dram/Sram Memory: Samsung
- Battery: Samsung SDI
- MLCC(Multi Layer Ceramcic Condenser): Samsung
- Chip Varistor: Amotek (Korea)
- FC(Flexible Circuitry): Interflex (Korea)

That is absurd and unfounded.

1) The reality is iOS was a few more years advanced when Android was announced so Google had a lot of catch up to do. So maybe it appears Google is out engineering Apple b/c they push out updates faster, but it's only an illusion. iOS is still superior to Android even if Android had a few better features. Google also isn't that involved in actual hardware development. It's up to the hardware makers to tweak Android for many of the specs it employs in a given model.

2) Android hardware is very uneven because of its openness. Some phones can't even be upgraded at all to the latest and greatest -- even as Android proponents carp that Siri isn't included in iOS 5 for phones other than the 4S. Other phones are not compatible with many apps in the Android App store.

3) Hardware is only half of a phone. Their are plenty of beautiful Android phones, especially some of the early models, that frankly were not practical because the guts were so half-baked.

4) "Lame strategy" as you call it doesn't yield 1m pre-orders and who knows how many snaked lines at tomorrow's launch. If Android were significantly more attractive (in usability and design) -- even just one model, then it seems at least a good chunk of 4S buyers would have gone that route. I doubt all the 4S buyers are just upgrading from previous iPhones b/c the way subsidized phone upgrades are staggered.

5) Google via the Motorola purchase may catch and surpass Apple at some point in the near future but it's crass to say Apple is taking a nap or that it's resting on its laurels. Sales to a wide array of consumers just do not bear that sentiment out.
