Apple just gets more free publicity with all this model rumour BS. No one knows anything, these analyst know about as much as you and I "nothing".

When the phone is released. We can then make a decision about if it is worth an upgrade, or a jump to an alternative product. Until that time enough with the speculation.

If this is the case then what exactly has the hardware design team been doing for the last 16 months? sitting around with their feet up while the iOS team works.

The fact that there isn't a consistent message coming out about whether there will be just an iPhone 5, and iPhone 5 and a 4S or just an iPhone 4S suggests that Apple have done a great job at keeping this upcoming announcement under wraps.

Roughly two weeks out and nobody knows what to truly expect. This can only lead to even more hype and chatter about the upcoming announcement. Apple have the chance here to do something special.

I won't be upgrading whatever they announce, that's because I'm on a 24 month deal with an iPhone 4. Even still, I really hope that Apple announce something that blows the iPhone 4 and all of its competitors out of the water. iOS 5 looks stunning from the previews I've seen, if the products announces shortly, whatever they may be match up to this it will be a great time to be an Apple fan and a consumer in general.

If Apple produce something special the competitors will have to up their games once again meaning ever better products for the customer.

Fingers crossed, it's going to be a good one!

I'd love to see a live video feed of Apple's comms and PR departments right now.

One minute they leak one rumour, an hour later they leak the exact opposite, then they sit back and laugh their heads of as they watch millions of people and 10s of thousands of blogs try to take side with either one or the other false rumour.

Considerations:

  • IOS 5 and iCloud planned for this Fall, perhaps a month delay. Sounds ok.
  • Come up with a "cheaper" iPhone to get the low-end market. Sounds ok.

  • Spend 16 months working on a cheaper iPhone? Doesn't sound ok.
  • Take the risk of disappointing a huge consumer base with a) only an internally upgraded iPhone 4 and b) having that consumer base wait too long. Doesn't sound ok.
  • Giving competitors possibilities? Doesn't sound ok.

Apple must come up with something smashing i.e. a totally redesigned iPhone 5 with up-to-date technology, otherwise they'll lose it. Or us. Me anyway. And I'm tired of waiting.

Redesigned iPhone 5 or I'll stick with my 3GS. Running IOS5 as consolation.

My goodness! How many "it's coming" then "It's not coming" rumors are we going to see???? This is getting silly!!!!!!

Wake me up when the announcement is over then we'll all know for sure!

Im getting so sick of this iPhone4s/5 back and forth BS

It's only going to get worse until October 4th -- assuming that date is correct. :)

You need to remember AT&T is going to market the iPhone 5/ 4S as 4G. Personally I call HSPA+ fakeG.
WiMax and LTE are the only thing right now that are truly what I call 4G.

LTE is certainly the best of the bunch, though technically not even "4G" according to standards bodies -- but who cares what they think? WiMAX and HSPA+ are probably both in the "Fake-G" category since HSPA+ can be better than WiMAX in many scenarios since WiMAX rarely approaches anywhere near its theoretical maximum in practice. I love the section in this article titled "when 3G beats 4G". I've tested Clear WiMAX in my area for home service and if you're right under a tower it is pretty fast, otherwise it is kinda shakey. Anyway, I'd be thrilled to have HSPA+ speeds and even more thrilled to get LTE speeds on an iPhone. I doubt we'd ever see a WiMAX iPhone.

Like I said months back, stop calling this iPhone 5. It's 4S and 4S only. Not enough improvements to even consider calling it a "5" unless RUMORS hold true for a bigger screen.

But other folks keep telling me not to call it an iPhone 4S :D

This is disappointing, but I'm still buying 2. One for me, one for my wife.

Can you pick up 2 more while you're at it? My wife and I each need one too. ;)

All numbers point to 5: iOS 5, A5 Chip and the fifth iPhone in the market.

It would be cool if they skipped 4G and jumped straight to 5G too. Never noticed the "all numbers point to 5" thing (including the processor). But I guess that is because Apple started numbering the processors with iPhone generations. Maybe it will have the 5-core Kal-El-based processor instead (just read that Kal-El has a fifth low-power core).

Your 3Gs won't run iOS 5 in any form close to functionality. :apple:

If they expect an A5, 8MP camera and a possible 4 inch screen, that's essentially the iphone 5 minus the physical casing changes. In my mind, upgrading the screen to 4 inches is worth more than just an 'S' moniker. It's one of the biggest changes to the iPhone as we know it.

We've seen this movie before with the 3G and 3GS. It's not that outrageous a thought that the 4S is THE next iPhone. It may look the same as the 4 but the guts are going to be all new and I'm guessing it will have new functionality the 4G does not have just as the 3GS did things the 3G could not do...even if it was by way of not enabling the 3G. If you are just bored with the 4 case buy an overlay. The reality is most phone users keep their phone for the life of the contract rather than serial upgrade every year so a bump like this is fine b/c the target group is 3GS users.

It'll be called iPhone 5. Can we stop with all this 4S crap!?

To be perfectly honest I wish they'd stop adding digits after stuff and just call it iPhone.

Compared to some of the other names out there adding a number isn't so bad:

Vibrant, Fascinate, Infuse, Captivate, Sensation, Wildfire, Panache, Incredible, Desire, Legend, Hero, Dream ... are these phones or perfumes?

If this is true. Apple may have hit it's peak.

Imagine buying an iPhone 4 updated and in June or July next year they come out with an iPhone 5 and your stuck with a 2 year contract.:(

This is what equity analysts do.

They call competitors, they call suppliers, vendors and the like.

If his contacts at parts suppliers of Apple say they aren't making any unusual parts that weren't in the iPhone4, what else is he supposed to deduce?

The more I think about it the more I dont think their will be an iphone5 this year. We would have seen some hardware leaks by now. The case leaks we have seen are probably for the 3G ipod. So expect an iphone 4s and nothing more. If that is true, its a sad day considering they waited 15 months for this when they could have introduced a 4S a few months ago. Obviously the delay has been them getting iOS5 ready for the 4S.
Its going to be a big letdown in a couple of weeks. :(

picked the best time to go on vacation this weekend and all next week.. maybe we will have some REAL news when I get back

Actually, one of the best things about Android is that companies vie for the highest bar in specs, training the customer to be fickle and disloyal to any particular OEM or brand.

Apple builds an uber reliable and finely tuned device, tweaks it a bit as a rev and continues building and shipping the previous model as the new entry model. Customers don't care all that much when they purchase as two years later, after the contract is up, they get a much upgraded device that strangely behaves like their current device, only better, within a growing ecosystem.

My own opinion is that Apple has abopted a tic/toc approach not unlike Intel has for processors, alternating minor rev, with major rev releases in alternate yearly cycles.

Geeks hate on Apple for this, but who cares. Android OEM's are happy to suck up to these folks that live on the bleeding edge even if it is ultimately a money losing proposition.

Apple loves the strategy as they get really good at building and get the benefits of long production runs at lowest part cost, upping their profits game. Developers love this as well as it makes it easier to support the few existing models and creates an incentive to develop for a large pool of very similar devices.

Heh... same here!

Analysts are usually ill-informed and making bad guesses by the seats of their pants, hoping they guess right and get some quick fame.

But this is what I've been suspecting for months now, based on many rumors and comments in the press. I bet some people got confused between iOS 5 and iPhone 5 -- and what we're really going to get is a new iPhone 4 revision (4s) designed to work with AT&T, Verizon and now Sprint's 4G "wimax" network.

Then they can sell the 4s as the exclusive phone (but in both black and white!) for Sprint users, and as the new option coming down the pipe for everyone else too. The original black and white iPhone 4 models with less RAM memory will get price drops and stick around for a while as entry-level models for AT&T and/or Verizon to offer.

First time I've ever agreed with an analyst.

I trust and believe Brian Blair. Al Gore is so full of crap.

There will be just ONE new iPhone the 4S.... and it will be much better than many anticipate. The A5 chip, with related improvements and enhancements, plus iOS 5 will be the winning combination.

This will take the pressure off of Apple, giving them more time to overcome the production problems with the iPhone 5.

In the end we all benefiit as the iPhone 5 needs to be right and only time will allow Apple to get that done.

An iPhone 5 released in the first quarter of 2012 would be fantastic. :)

That happens every year. I know people who just bought iPhones even though they know a new one is going to be released soon.
