I've genuinely not encountered this issue.

I've noticed iOS5 fixes a long running problem I had with a 3 year old bluetooth in car head unit.

Before, if the unit 'auto connected' the audio was 'scratchy' and lacking in bass. Disconnecting and reconnecting fixed it instantly, but it was annoying. This doesn't happen with iOS5 - on 4 or 4S, so at least for me, audio is much improved.

Yeah I wasn't sure if this was just my phone breaking down already or not, but I'm getting a bit of static in the ear piece and I get the echo thing happening as well. Hopefully it can be fixed with the software update

Could the echoing be a network issue? I've being experiencing echoing on my 4 lately, and sometime when I answer a call it's completely scrambled.

I must have posted over 50 times to the Apple Support community https://discussions.apple.com/message/16424561#16424561

I've had this issue from day 1 with 3 iPhone 4Ss so far, Apple has said nothing! The media has said nothing (until Macrumors has picked on it today)! If anyone in the media spoke about this 2 weeks ago I wouldn't have bought the 4S as I'm sure millions of others would have waited to see a solution to this.

It's hard to maintain quality control on a device that is produced in such large numbers so quickly. I've noticed a drop in Apple's quality beginning around 2009, around the time when prices were lowered to become more competitive in the computer market. More different part suppliers, and shoddier components produced in greater quantities and quicker = crappier devices.

No audio issue with the 4 running iOS4 and now also with iOS5, only happens to me when a call drops and I try to "Call Back" right away.

iphone 4s is BS top to bottom and should never have been made.. we all wanted iphone5 and now karma is killing apple..

Nothing is killing Apple, and you're dead wrong.

PLENTY of very happy 4S users.

I went ahead & submitted a bug report to Apple in respect to the static on the iPhone 4.

Hopefully this will speed up the process of them evaluating & issuing an update to address this as well.

I wonder how many of these issues are based on people updating/restoring a iOS 4 backup to iOS 5 on their iPhone 4S. I have no issues with any of the recent problems listed (battery, static, echo, etc). Whenever I get a new iPhone or go from a old iOS version to a major release (iOS4 -> iOS5) I always set the iPhone up as new.

I was one of the users experiencing the no audio on outgoing call issue. A 22 page thread on the subject can be found here:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3404857?start=0&tstart=0

I was initially getting the problem on about a third of my outgoing calls, which started to get extremely annoying. After researching the issue I started to find groups of others having the same problem. I wiped and restored my phone, and the problem persisted. I wiped and DFU restored the phone, and now I'm still getting the problem, but its rare. Rare enough to the point that I'm going to wait until I hear more about the problem before taking the phone back.

After a couple of calls to apple tech support they couldn't figure out the problem and thought it might be hardware related. I made an appointment to exchange the phone at a store, but cancelled it after seeing the issue getting more press. I figure I want to see what they have to say about the problem before I exchange the phone for one with more severe problems. Gotta love apples QC.

In the long thread posted above, many users still continued to have the problem even after several restore/dfu restore runs. Some users exchanged the phone and never had problems on the new phone, and some users exchanged the phone but immediately found the same problem on their new phone. At this point I want to wait and see what the official response to the problem is.

Some apple reps said it could be software, but the more knowledgeable people who some customers spoke to said that it was a hardware receiver audio switching problem and it was becoming known. Guess we'll have to see what the official word is.

I have had a few dropped calls with my iPhone 4S and I attribute that to Sprint. It always seems to happen is certain areas. I have not experienced the echo problem as I don't wear a headset.

Picked up a Verizon iPhone 4S - 32GB and on about 1 in 10 calls I get no outbound audio when dialing. Call shows the timer counting as if the call is progressing but absolutely no ring back and cannot hear the party on the other end when they answer.

This issue I had not experienced yet. Overall I have been very pleased with my iPhone 4S. The slow data speed I am getting on Sprint is a bit frustrating though and I have logged a complaint to Sprint about this.

I suggest that anyone having the echo and/or lost audio problem contact Apple and let them know. The more complaints the better to get the problem resolved.

EDIT: I have experienced the audio drop out issue on another non-Apple phone but not with the iPhone. At that time I was using Verizon. I wonder if there is any correlation to the wireless carrier being used.

Is it possible the buzzing could be dependent on your cell provider. I am on rogers in Canada. I am sure ATT would have same problem, does anyone on verizon have the buzzing?

I am now on my 3rd replacement 4s and I still have the echo issue, hardware or software?

Time will tell!

I'm on my second phone -- still have the echo issue and it's terrible. It usually happens a few minutes into a call, not right away, which is why I imagine many have not experienced it (since most people don't use their phone as, like, a phone).

I'm going for a 3rd phone this weekend.

my couple issues are what most people are encountering.

Sometimes there is this very loud echo of my voice, it last awhile. I have to hang up and make the call again.

And of course the battery life is definitely weaker in comparison to my old iPhone 3G.

I hope the echo and battery are software relate issues that will be solved by an update, if not I might consider swapping my iPhone for another.

Put me in the "no outbound audio" category. I thought it was a problem with my connection to the tower. I guess it might be the phone's fault.
