I have 8.1.1 now on my 4S .... and the performance is getting better (Although not as smooth as 7.1.2 was)

The biggest improvement for me in 8.1.1 is the camera app. Especially when switching to the camera roll view via the little thumbnail image in the bottom left corner of the cam app. With 8.0 & 8.1 it would take an age to view the photo just taken using this button. Now it's much much quicker. Dare I say back to normal.

This improvement alone make the update worth while for me.

Everything feels snappier for me now after the 8.1.1 update on my older test devices. I think there must be some background tasks performed after upgrading because initially it wasn't impressive. But now the keyboard lag is significantly reduced, and Safari is usable, moving around the OS feels far smoother than before. This is probably as good as it's going to get for iPhone 4s/iPad 2 users.

Ah, OK. Then I guess that question is for anyone posting who has updated to 8.1.1 and is commenting. Homme?

i have Reduce Motion turned off and Increase Contrast turned on.

i have noticed Safari feel more stable than ever though

What about TheVerge? At this point I'm not sure if the website is just crap since I've heard even iPhone 6 users lag on that site.

since josh left, the verge is hardly worth anyone's time
their reporting is so biased and irresponsible it's ridiculous
obvious bias to apple renders the site's reviews almost useless - and this is coming from a pretty hardcore apple fan - and very irresponsible reporting; especially on 'hot' social issues that are clearly clickbaits. read: the comet landing interview t shirt interview piece that was posted up literally the afternoon of the incident, with a guest commentary by a feminism 'expert'.

Furthermore, anyone who comments on those latter articles (not even maliciously) get warned immediately and deleted.

all that site has going for it is a wicked video team.

I quit the verge - they're everything that's wrong with internet 'blog reporting' and lack of editorial integrity.

Is the music app performance better? More specifically, when I play music with 15 MB+ album art, the music app tends to crash/lag on me often. It got marginally better under 8.1 but the issue is still there.

The music app performance seems unchanged to me. But then again I didn't encounter any problems in 8.1 either. I access my library using iTunes match and all artwork appears as I expect. No crashes etc.

However I don't think I have any artwork anything like 15mb in size. That's huge! Most of my artwork is no more than a 100kb

Update: After a battery calibration, the charge has now settled down to a more acceptable duration of 4 days 3hours, from 100% to 0% switch off. Have done another recalibration and will update on duration but I don't think it will change much.

How exactly do you do the battery recalibration?
I have to try your method!

I simply used the iphone from 100% until it depleted and switched off.
Then left it overnight to discharge further. Then I charged to 100% the following morning.
Once at 100% charge, removed the charging/data cable, then by pressing the home button and the on/off button and holding for 3-4 seconds the phone would switch off.
Started iphone and a full battery cycle/ calibration successful.
Done this nearly every month since I got it over a year ago.

Apparently this helps to re-energize the battery and move the energy particles around. Age of the battery will be a deciding factor as it depletes and loses it's charge over time. Just wish there was an unjailbroken app to show this.

I'm gonna try it right now!

Worth the ugprade from 7.1.2? I have a 16GB iPhone 4s

No

If performance is important to you, then I would have to say don't do it. 8.1.1 is better than 8.1 but the experience is not as quick and as smooth as 7.1.2 was. If I could go back ... I would.

For info I'm also on a 16gb 4S

Great, thanks. Will keep it at 7.1.2 then. Probably the iPad 2 as well.

iPhone 4S with iOS 8

Well having seen 400*400 size album art on a retina screen I now have the highest quality album art available so when screen resolutions keeps getting bigger I don't need to add in updated album art (which is really hard with 40 GB+ of songs). I have original scans backed up just in case for many of my albums. On retina Macs, Apple TV, and iPhone 6+, it makes a whole lot of difference.

Yeah that article did make any sense at all, probably trying to jump on the next "gamer gate" type article.

The Verge set out to create a website dedicated to covering both technology and culture. For a while, they met that goal and did a great job. These days, the site is all about their perspective on what culture should look like. There's so little tech coverage now that what little they do have looks out of place.

I still decided to leave my moms iPhone 4s running iOS7.1.2 after i've seen this video with the comparison with iOS8.3 on the 4s. Especially the App Store is pretty slow. I've also seen with other 3rd party apps (which have regular updates) at a colleagues phone that they start sooo slow.

Good choice, right now, 8.4 on 4s is slower than 4 on 7.1.2

That doesn't sound good. I did spoke with someone in a Dutch forum and he said that 8.3 is much quicker then 8.0>8.2 on a iPhone 4s. It would be a shame if 8.4 would be even slower then a iPhone 4 running iOS71.2

I will leave her iPhone 4s for now on iOS7.1.2
