does anyone think with its small size the 4S still performs better on iOS 8 compared to the iPad 2, Touch 5G, Original iPad Mini and iPad 3...

Nope, my iPod Touch 5g performs better than my iPhone 4S and definitely my iPad 2. Thankfully we upgraded to the original air so =D

The battery life on my 4s has been terrible since updating to 8.1.

I beg to differ, I use it a lot and yesterday for example, I went to work at 8 am with 100% battery and was struggling at the end of the day because battery WAS NOT draining and I wanted to charge it overnight! My battery life is fantastic.

That's a great swap to get the 5S from your fiancee and she get's the older 5. She must love you a lot ;)

We hope to switch to the 5S in a year or so (or if the 4S start given hardware problems).

It's good that we decide not to upgrade to 8.1 on our 4S device. They still work like a charm with 7.1.2

I hope so :) hehe.

I can say that the 5s is very nice. More screen realestate, still confortable to hold and touch id is cool for buying apps off the store (shame it requires you to use passcode lock though).

The 5 was supposed to come today and didn't, and she is ready to chuck the 4s out of the window. She is someone who has never complained about a phones performance either. Hope it comes tomorrow or i will be in the bad books lol.

Best of luck to you!

I got 15% drain on 6 hour standby if that mattered. I think my battery life seem a bit lower but I'm getting much better performance which is a trade off.

The 4s do have less pixels to run compared to any of those devices especially the tablet which may have to do with that though the rest of the A5 devices are running at 1 Ghz while the 4s is running at 800 MHz (which they should bump up IMO).

yeah true because it does have the smaller screen out of the A5's..

and the Touch 5G also runs at 800Mhz as well... Dunno why people are saying it runs at 1Ghz when it pretty much underclocked as well

8.1 is working fine on my 4S so far. The notifications/Today view lags a bit while scrolling but otherwise I don't notice a lot of slowdown. Can't really say much about the battery life since I don't use the phone as daily driver. But overall I'm happy I took the risk and upgraded, I love the new sharing options and widgets too.

Most specifications and sites seem to indicate 1 GHz and while GeekBench does show 800 MHz, many app do seem to run a bit smoother on the iPod Touch 5th Gen from what I've been told at least under iOS 7.

Well after a few days of iOS 8.1 on my 4S, something strange happened this morning..
Glanced at my phone to check the charge and it showed 35% remaining of battery life.
Next, the phone shuts down right infront of me (never ever done that before).
On pressing the home key the screen displays low battery/ attach charger graphic with a very FINE red line for charge remaining.
Battery calibration time again :(

3 days and 2 hours from a full charge is pi55 poor considering I could get 4-5 days on iOS 7.1.2 and usage is the same, I only use it for email/sms/imessage and occasional photos.

Update: After a battery calibration, the charge has now settled down to a more acceptable duration of 4 days 3hours, from 100% to 0% switch off.
Have done another recalibration and will update on duration but I don't think it will change much.

From my experiences, recalibrating the battery after a firmware/ OS update definately helps the OS manage the battery life better.

My biggest mistake, which I could go back to iOS 7 or iOS 6! :(

I count two mistakes  :D

Did anyone try 8.1.1 on the 4s?

I finally bit the bullet and put the new OS on my 4s. It works great. There is a slight lag when first opening apps that's noticeable, as well as the browser, but it's not enough to bother me. I'm glad I did it.

That said, I'm certainly not a heavy user or power user of my iPhone. I have an iPad Air that I use for almost everything. That's part of the reason I finally updated the phone--so I could sync the texting, etc.

Hilarious. Never got more than 24 hours charge on my 4S... Probably most to do with the fluctuating 3G signal in the UK - constant searching for connections and moving from 2g to 3g really drains the battery.

:)

so that iOS 8.1.1 is out anyone tried it on the 4S.. better than 8.1

i'm currently updating and will share my results later today

I have 8.1.1 now on my 4S .... and the performance is getting better (Although not as smooth as 7.1.2 was)

The biggest improvement for me in 8.1.1 is the camera app. Especially when switching to the camera roll view via the little thumbnail image in the bottom left corner of the cam app. With 8.0 & 8.1 it would take an age to view the photo just taken using this button. Now it's much much quicker. Dare I say back to normal.

This improvement alone make the update worth while for me.

Is the music app performance better? More specifically, when I play music with 15 MB+ album art, the music app tends to crash/lag on me often. It got marginally better under 8.1 but the issue is still there.

Thanks homie:p

no problem

the performance on 8.1.1 for my 4S is more or less the same as 8.1, it does however feel a bit more stable though but dont expect anything special besides bug fixing here and there.

Ars Technica said they are doing a speed test on 8.1.1 for 4S so am curious to read this...

It's still not as good as going from 7.0.6 to 7.1 on iphone 4.
