Make sense. Event in September, launch in October.
Maybe no new iPods in Sep

Apple said iOS 5 will be released this fall, fall begins on Sept 23rd and I am pretty the next iPhone will be released along side the iOS 5.

Event at the end of Sept, release date early October (this is what I'll bet my money on).

actually ipods in september. Then the iphone will be introduced in October and 1 or 2 weeks it will be in the stores.

So what software version will the new iPod touch have?

I would think Apple is saving their new OS for their flagship device, the iPhone and they won't release a new iPod touch running iOS 4.3.5

So my guess is that both device will have to wait to be released along side each other.

and then what's happening with the ipods?

Well last year when Apple said, iOS4.2 for fall, they released it all the way in November, and it was late November I believe. Now they said iOS5 is coming in Fall, not even iPhone 5. And iOS usually gets released before the new hardware. Well, Verizon's LTE network is getting big much faster than I expected. So maybe they are holding out for those 2nd gen LTE chips.

LTE would be great but I wouldn't hold my breath... I'd be happy if the Verizon phone allowed GSM roaming (in the EU)...

I am suspecting the death of iPod Touch. Think about it. iPhone 3GS off contract is $500. There is lots of rumors about a price drop, probably after Apple and AT&T saw huge sales after dropping contract price of 3GS to $50. Imagine if they made it free with contract. So if they are going to drop the off contract price to lets say $400, might as well drop it to $300 and do away with the iPod Touch. Simpler you keep your hardware lineup, the less it's going to cost to produce them. Plus, since iPhone 5 is going to be a HUGE upgrade, the big disparity in price is not going to affect the high end iPhone 5, while the low end iPhone 4S is going to plummet Android sales.

Like many here, I have been trying to squeeze a little more life out of my aging iPhone 3GS while waiting for the next hardware revision.

It's been difficult this last year seeing everyone walking around with iPhone 4s, but finally my time is almost at hand!

An iPhone and an iPod touch serve two different purpose.

Also, considering Apple is enhancing the features of the iPod touch with iOS 5, its not going no where.

Wether its free or only $50, I am not buying my 4 year old nephew an iPhone with a data plan just because its cheaper than an iPod touch.

I sort of agree, but I think the 3Gs will go away and be replaced by a slightly cheeper version of the current iPhone 4. I don't see the iPod Touch going away.... it's becoming the main iPod. It would be best if they could take the guts of the iPhone 4 and make it the new touch.

BTW... I think announce in September and launch in October for the iPhone 5.

Glad to know. At least when IOS 5 comes out i'll have time to play with it and not be concerned about iPhone coming out at the same time.

Here some guess: wasn't there a rumor for an iPod with a SIM ? For whatever reason I could imagine that the iPod will become the low entry iPhone. The name would remain because its a brand. Just get a SIM in, don't make the battery battery and don't give a retina. Or maybe this idea is total nonsense.

Well, I tried out the HTC Thunderbolt for a month, yes it sucks, but LTE is amazingly fast. It's hard going back to 3G with my current Verizon iPhone 4. Now everyone is saying LTE is unlikely, but why would Apple wait this long? Especially when there is an android out every day.

Wow talk about making people wait my 3GS is on its last legs fingers cross it can hold out till October gezzz! Apple know how to keep people waiting could easily buy a Google Android phone but that wouldn’t be the same as an iPhone 5 now would it...:p

I'm much the same actually, though I have to be honest I'm willing to wait, I just want to know when. If it's October so be it. but I'd rather see an announcement telling me when :)

Well, if there was a downgraded iPhone 4 for $300, why would you buy an iPod touch instead? to save $70? And as we know, apple is all about keeping their lineups small. Macbook Airs already replaced MacBooks, and soon macbook pros. Plus iPod Touch owners also buy "other" smartphones like android. And apple doesn't want that. So I really see this happening.

Only reason for a October release is if Apple is waiting for a 28nm Ax chip.
Maybe the heat problem is true. The A5 is 30% bigger then other ARM chips because it have extra logic. Maybe it was to hot for a phone and they had to shrink it to 28nm

Production of 28nm wafers is currently ramping up at TSMC.

Dual core Cortex9 at 1.5ghz + PowerVR6 graphic?

There is no way iPhone 5 is going to be faster than iPad 2. They will under clock it to 1ghz dual core.

I was hoping for September, but I guess October will be fine. It is late anyway, so I guess waiting an additional month will not make a difference. Patience is a virtue. :)

The iPod touch would have more memory I would assume for a lower price. Plus, who's to say the iPod Touch price would not come down too? There are still a number of people that just want a media player. I don't think it's time yet to make that move.

Well, why wouldn't you buy your nephew an iPhone 4 WITHOUT contract for $300, and not use it as a phone? It's like the iPad with 3G, you don't have to use it, but it's good to have just in case.

Of course when I'm finally contract free and ready to switch to any carrier for the iPhone there has to be a delay. Just my luck :( I don't know if I can use this dumbphone for much longer. HTC makes some of the worst products. My phone constantly locks up, drops calls, randomly shuts off etc and having the new iPhone would be nice. I just hope the extra time we are all waiting is worth it and this is not just a minor upgrade.

Curious if true. If it launches this late then I think it's a "permanent" realignment of the traditional iPhone launch time. Previously I thought the next iPhone would be a short model season and that an LTE iPhone would launch Summer 2012 at the usual June-July time slot. But I can't see Apple launching two phones 6 months of each other with one being generationally better, not just the more common tweak.

iPod sales are in the toilet, we know this. So it seems Apple is going to replace lost 1Q iPod revenue with 1Q iPhone revenue. Question now is what does Apple have up it's sleeve to replace the revenue it use to get 4Q from the iPhone launch. New product on the way? Hmmm.

At any rate, my contract expires in Nov, but I'm going to sit the next iPhone out. I'm happy w/ the 4 and I'd rather save my subsidy for an LTE version.
