september ... october
meh, not much of a difference imo

It makes a difference to me. My 3GS is not working well. It will keep going from sleep to the "slide to power off" screen even when it's just sitting on a table/not being used. Yesterday it did that every time I tried to do something including after each entry for each digit in the unlock code.

I was holding out on getting a new one (I'm out of contract) because I thought the iPhone 5 would be out in Sept. But now it could be as late as late October according to the article.

I may just get the iphone 4 now, stop dealing with this bizarre 3GS, and be happy with what I have (a working phone) sooner rather than later.

and then what's happening with the ipods?

They will be replaced by the iPad Nano -- which comes in WiFi-only or WiFi+3g/4g (data-only/no-voice) and likely have a different form factor than the iPhone (more like the mockups we have been seeing for iPhone 5).

Apple is beginning to wind down the "iPod" branding as we have seen in the early versions of iOS 5 which now has "Music" and "Video" instead of an "iPod" app for iPhone.

There is a level of desperation here that is kind of sad and scary.

I'm sure the new iPhone will be terrific, or not.

BUT IT'S JUST A PHONE!! NOT A CURE FOR CANCER!!

A little perspective here.:)

You're the only one talking about cancer... This is a tech enthusiast web site. Let us have our fun. ;)

If this is true, this really sucks for my wife and I.

We are moving from Japan to the US on September 6th, and I'm on a horrendous 3G that I can't wait to throw at a wall. I'm pretty set on an iPhone 5 and a September launch would be good.

But if it's late October, I'll be damned if I wait nearly two full months to get a phone. No way would I buy an IP4 at that point. But I'm also not going to wait two months so I can get a phone that comes with a $100 monthly bill. If late October is true, I just may say F it since Apple does a terrible job supporting old models as it is (my 3G is unusable and has been for a year) and just get the cheapest dumb phone there is. I hardly use any apps at all.

The longer this phone is delayed the happier I am about my decision to dump my iPhone 3G in June and buy a Refurb 4 for $99. I can't imagine myself actually spending $200 on a phone anyway...

Matters not to me. I'm waiting iPhone 5 out and will stick with iPhone 4 until iPhone 6. Just give me iOS 5 please. Thanks.

Man, I hope this iPhone comes sooner rather than later. I can't wait! Although I suppose if they introduce it in September, at least we won't hear rumours for an additional month.

If I had an iPhone 3GS or 3G, i would be pissed waiting for the iPhone 5. But I have an iPhone 4 which pretty much holds up to the other smart phones out there on the market so I should be fine for a while.

What date is the iPod event going to be held?

With all due respect to AllThingsD's sources:

1) Apple unambiguously said during the latest earnings call that it will be undergoing a major product transition THIS fiscal quarter (which is over before October). With all due respect, they weren't talking about a new AppleTV or a couple of Mac models. The only "major transitions" are iPhone or iPad. Unless you believe there will be an iPad 3 out before the iPhone 5, it has to be the iPhone 5. And keep in mind that you can't just make **** up during earnings calls -- false statements can have legal repercussions.

2) Heavy rumors of late August/September AT&T and Apple Store upstaffings -- you'd have to believe that every single one of those rumors was a phony.

The earnings call is the smoking gun here. This can't be ignored.

The quarter ends September 25th. For it to be even worth mentioning, it would have to have a material effect on numbers -- this means something happens WELL BEFORE the 25th... at least early enough to affect the numbers.

Okay, so maybe the phone itself won't launch until October, but the transition will be well underway prior.

Now, here's the other problem with this: Apple doesn't like giving a long lead time between announcement and on-sale because iPhone sales practically stop during this window. They want the lead time between announcement and on-sale to be as short as possible -- recently as short as nine days.

I just think AllThingsD is wrong here, I really do.

iPhone 5 availability is starting to sound an awful lot like the PowerBook G5 availability. It may never be released.

My guess is that the iOS 5 will be released in September and the iPhone 5 in January. I hope that's the case...

There is no way iPhone 5 is going to be faster than iPad 2. They will under clock it to 1ghz dual core.

True!

But... unless they would release a newer ipad shortly after. Depending on actual Fall launch, it seems to be closer and closer to normal ipad launch.

And Andriod phones are getting faster and faster, with 4G too.

Alas, I'm doubtful, because I see more business benefit not to launch iphone/ipad so close together. From marketing point, releasing them on seperate quarters has a trend to hype up both products; increasing the chance of ipad buyers to buy an iphone later, and/or iphone buyers to also buy an ipad later. Releasing them both almost simultaneously could force a customer with limited funds to choose between the two. Even if the customer could buy the other later, the impulse to buy it isn't as strong as the other has been out for couple months already.

Given this, I'm not sure if it is a good idea for Apple to release too many products on the same day; given a lot of iphone buyers also buys ipod touches, and ipad! (i do).

I wouldn't be surprise in September they only announce 1 main product (iphone or ipod) and software (ios); to prevent product canniblism.

As Chupa Chupa already pointed out, there are of course other potential candidates for a "major product transition" in Apple's lineup.

And even if it were the iPhone - according to this website (entry for 2:20) Oppenheimer said: ‘future product transition that we’re not going to talk about today that will impact our coming quarterAnd if they'd be releasing some new / revised product in - say - October, they would have to finance production cost upfront (i.e. August/September).

It doesn't seem likely that an iPhone/iPad update would count as a transition. They didn't say "introduction" either.

"Transition" implies a change. I cannot guess what that might be, unless it's merging Apple TV with their laptops/desktops or something along those lines. Or dumping desktops altogether. Dunno. Not enough info.

As for the iPhone 5 waiting until October: judging from Spring rumors and Verizon's comments, it seems likely that Apple was originally planning just a simple Summer refresh, but Android/Samsung sales made them change their mind and go for something entirely new.

Powerbook never sold anywhere near the numbers of iphone. iphone is too profitable for Apple to let failed.

You left out the iPod. That is one of the legs of Apple's main product lines. Rumors have said the next iPod touch would have 3G capability. That would be a major transition if true.

Also the MP has yet to be updated. Quite possible that Apple did a complete redesign -- some rumors have said it will have a rack mountable case.

So while and iPhone this Q is possible it's not a foregone conclusion. Apple does have major other products in the update queue.
There is an iPod transition every September, and I don't see how adding 3G to the iPod Touch will entail additional financial risk for Apple's iPod transition (in years past they haven't claimed during earnings calls that the iPod transition is a downside risk). Also, as you are aware, the iPod is playing a much, much smaller role in Apple's bottom line these days.

I'm sure you understood the cancer reference. It was meant to compare what I consider something of real importance with something of, IMO, considerably less importance - in the greater scheme of things.

Not my intention to be a buzz-kill. :D

Just my attempt to bring a little perspective to the relative importance of things.

Sorry if I was a wet blanket (old guy's term)

Doubtful that it is really related, but honestly I'm not surprised by this news. Hindsight may be 20/20 afterwards that the answer was staring us all in the face all along. For those of us that upgraded to iPhone 4's on launch date (and are the main line w/ AT&T), the upgrade date has been the middle of November for the last several months when texting *639#.

edit: Just found the old text. Actual date has been 11/25/11.

The last part of your comment may well be true -- but there is a likelier explanation -- component shortages due to the Japanese earthquake. Judging by how well the year old iPhone 4 sold last quarter (it's best sales ever, by far), Android has NO effect on iPhone sales whatsoever -- Apple's ability to produce enough iPhones and have extra carriers lined up is the only thing that matters.

As for the iPhone not being a transition -- that's simply absurd. Apple has used the phrase in the past about the iPhone. Mentioning the Apple TV shows how far from reality you are -- the Apple TV has NO *material* impact on Apple's bottom line.
