Lame. So the iPhone 4 will be apple's flagship model for about 16 months? That's an eternity in the cell phone world.

Who gives a flying you know what? September October...it's all the same blind guessing. MR is so desperate for news and post anything that people make up.

I HAVE MADE CRAP UP AND SENT IT AND THEY POSTED IT!! I wasnt trying to share false info but wanted to see if they would post it.

And yet it hasn't hurt sales one bit. Apple is the #1 smartphone handset company in the world. (http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-...vendor-in-second-quarter-researcher-says.html)

I'm not saying an updated iPhone isn't overdue, but the iPhone 4 was engineered for the long haul. The next iPhone will have minor tweaks. With the iPhone 4 having decent battery life and great screen rez, it's the OS that matters most to users. LTE soon, but very few cities have LTE yet.

Of course when I'm finally contract free and ready to switch to any carrier for the iPhone there has to be a delay. Just my luck :( I don't know if I can use this dumbphone for much longer. HTC makes some of the worst products. My phone constantly locks up, drops calls, randomly shuts off etc and having the new iPhone would be nice. I just hope the extra time we are all waiting is worth it and this is not just a minor upgrade.

My iPhone 4 does that & it's very prone to dropping calls.

Current iPhone dead.... can .... wait.... much.... longer

Having found out that iPhones don't like swimming (yes- I know..) I had to purchase a 'lesser' phone, waiting for the new iPhone release. All I can say is that it can't come soon enough.... I hate this nasty (non-smart phone), turns on all the time accidentally, won't automatically add phone numbers when replying to texts (have to load manually), crappy cal, etc. I guess I shouldn't ask too much, it's just after 4 years with them it's hard to adjust to a lesser spec.... so... Apple, please hurry~

October no doubt for US, so will that mean November ROW?

Is it possible that Apple delayed it one month so they could get international RF emissions certification for the built-in near-field communications (NFC) antenna? Remember, NFC is VERY important for the east Asian market (especially Japan, South Korea and Hong Kong, where NFC mobile payment systems are widely used), and if the new iPhone can incorporate NFC that is at least compatible with the Sony FeliCa standard, they could clean up the market in no time flat. :)

Well, if there was a downgraded iPhone 4 for $300, why would you buy an iPod touch instead? to save $70? And as we know, apple is all about keeping their lineups small. Macbook Airs already replaced MacBooks, and soon macbook pros. Plus iPod Touch owners also buy "other" smartphones like android. And apple doesn't want that. So I really see this happening.

Two words:
no contract.

Well that's a conflicting report with the other news that says AT&T employees have seen a vacation blackout for the last 2 weeks of Sept. And also, if true, it's very lame. Very very lame. :(:apple:

makes sense

given all the throttling top users in early October rumors which were posted recently.

If I can get a cheaper, prepaid plan for the iPhone (with Virgin etc.) I'll stick with the iPhone; if not, may just bail until that happens. I really like my iPhone mainly for its ease of use but my iPad has usurped much of what I used to do with it.

As long as this is talking to be released, AT&T should give early iPhone 4 adopters, a grace period for early upgrades.

Why should they do that?

Standard upgrade window is after 20 months, 18 months in some cases.

I know we think the iPhone is special but it's really no different than any other smartphone. Why should AT&T make an exception only for iPhone owners?

Coincidentally - there's a new Gourmet Haus Staudt opening up near Cuppertino which delayed it's opening until September....

I won't believe any of these rumors till I see it on the apple site.

It wouldn't be a rumor then, now would it?

I want to think that Apple itself has launched both the rumor of October launch as well as the iP5 to be only a "modest" update. Then they can surprise us all in awe and excitement when the astonishing, completely new and jaw-breaking new iPhone 5 comes for sale in late August!!

2 Reasons it isn't true

With all due respect to AllThingsD's sources:

1) Apple unambiguously said during the latest earnings call that it will be undergoing a major product transition THIS fiscal quarter (which is over before October). With all due respect, they weren't talking about a new AppleTV or a couple of Mac models. The only "major transitions" are iPhone or iPad. Unless you believe there will be an iPad 3 out before the iPhone 5, it has to be the iPhone 5. And keep in mind that you can't just make **** up during earnings calls -- false statements can have legal repercussions.

2) Heavy rumors of late August/September AT&T and Apple Store upstaffings -- you'd have to believe that every single one of those rumors was a phony.

I am suspecting the death of iPod Touch. Think about it. iPhone 3GS off contract is $500. There is lots of rumors about a price drop, probably after Apple and AT&T saw huge sales after dropping contract price of 3GS to $50. Imagine if they made it free with contract. So if they are going to drop the off contract price to lets say $400, might as well drop it to $300 and do away with the iPod Touch. Simpler you keep your hardware lineup, the less it's going to cost to produce them. Plus, since iPhone 5 is going to be a HUGE upgrade, the big disparity in price is not going to affect the high end iPhone 5, while the low end iPhone 4S is going to plummet Android sales.

Many people want an affordable and commitment-free introduction to iOS - be it for the MP3 player, the WiFi-capable internet browsing machine, the HD video camera, the throngs of apps available. My guess is that Apple sees how their products all sell each other. You wanted an MP3 player so you got an iPod touch. You know that the iPhone is an iPod touch plus phone capabilities, and iMessages is coming to iPod touchs, so even the text messaging will be familiar. So what kind of phone are you going to tend to get?

Just wishful thinking on my part, but by the time the iPhone 6 is released which would be the upgrade I'm eligible for since I purchased the iPhone 4. It will be well over the 2 year period. I won't upgrade to an iPhone 5 next June/July, when I have reason to believe the 6 is around the corner. I guess Apple is just shaking things up this time around with the launch of their next phone. I would hate to think that Apple is just milking the iPhone 4 for as long as possible because it's still selling like crazy.

People there is only ONE reason Apple would wait extra long for iPhone 5. There must be a hardware part that is not available till september/october, and it must be worth the wait. There is only one thing I can think of and that is 2nd gen, power efficient LTE chips. I mean, what else could it be?

Apple isn't known to be an early adopter of other people's technology. They're quick with stuff they've co-authored like FireWire and Thunderbolt, but LTE is still has too many variables to make it attractive. I also understand that LTE's performance suffers greatly when being used by many people at the same time. With Apple products, you expect things to work. When you introduce something as flakey as 4G, it's not always going to work as expected. It would tarnish Apple's image.

Apple will launch its fifth generation iPhone handset in October and not in September. Previously, we heard that Apple will launch iPhone 5 in September and for this reason AT&T has blacked out employee vacations in the September’s last two weeks. But AllThingsD’s claimed that the holiday blackout was in preparation for the launch were misinformed.

No one knows for sure when the new iPhone will be announced but Apple, and probably now the carriers. There's a reason why vacations are being blacked out at the end of September. Apple is very secretive, but at some point has to let the carriers know.

Actually you're all wrong. iPhone 5 will be the first major product in history to launch on Christmas Day.

You left out the iPod. That is one of the legs of Apple's main product lines. Rumors have said the next iPod touch would have 3G capability. That would be a major transition if true.

Also the MP has yet to be updated. Quite possible that Apple did a complete redesign -- some rumors have said it will have a rack mountable case.

So while and iPhone this Q is possible it's not a foregone conclusion. Apple does have major other products in the update queue.

Hmmmmm, I don't know…

If they do release it in October a lot of people will likely only be able to get their hands on it in early 2012.
