It doesn't make any sense since the latest report said that Apple sold 2 million in the 1st 24 HOURS. That means that in order to run out in the 1st hour there couldn't have been more than about 200,000 in stock. That's a mighty small number for a company like Apple to had ready. 2 million would have been a more credible number, and in that case all the preorders made in the 1st 24 hours ought to have been able to hit the Sept. 21 date. Maybe all of us with Oct 5 on our order status are seeing an erroneous output and that the phones will actually be delivered on the 21st as we would have expected.

There sure is something fishy about that.
I agree there is something fishy... but no.... the Oct 5th phones are not currently being shipped. Even if the website was wrong --- Apple wouldn't ship you a phone until they charged you. Has your credit card been shipped?
I missed the 9/21 cutoff by about an hour on Friday morning. I have the 10/5 date. Apple has put a $1 hold on my credit card (checking the validity of the card when taking the pre-order), but has not yet charged me the full price of the phone. Once I'm charged, I'll know its shipping soon.
So really, even if the Apple site is wrong, check to see if your credit card has been charged. Has anyone with a 10/5 date been charged?
I see 2 things being odd:
1 -- Shipping in 2 weeks from 9/14 with a delivery date by 10/5, suggests they plan on shipping around 9/28. So why no shipments of iphones from around 9/19-9/28? Of course, there could be a simple reason --- They are making a priority of stocking up the stores. In addition, they have more and more retail partners that need stock (Best Buy, Radio Shack, Walmart). So for the first couple weeks, all the inventory may be going to retail instead of online orders.
2 -- THe statement made by Apple today that "the majority" of pre-orders would be delivered by 9/21. I guess it depends on what you could at a pre-order. People ordering today, are still "pre-orders" and they almost certainly won't get their phone by 9/21. So I think the press release was poorly worded, and what it meant to say was, "the majority of pre-orders who were given a 9/21 date will in fact get it by 9/21." I don't think they meant to suggest that people would see their delivery date moved up by 2 weeks.
I do think us 10/5ers are likely to see the phones a bit early. They will probably ship by 9/28, with a delivery by 10/1 or 10/2 for most people.
Best case scenario, they start working through those pre-orders as soon as the 9/21 batch is done... start shipping them out later this week, and start arriving next week. But going back to (1) above, I think they are simply steering their inventory into retail for 10 days or so.
