Is this poor battery life?

Heck yeah. Take a look at the folks posting 10+ hours usage on a single charge. My replacement phone is like yours - 5 hours and change and it is dead. I consider it unacceptable considering Apple's battery life claims.

Looks about right. Keep in mind with iPod music listening, your usage will extend.

I am getting pretty much a day out of my phone which is fine. The idea of charging your phone every night is normal for someone with a smartphone.

I have just ordered a couple more lightning cables as there have been times that my phone hasn't lasted the day and then, it would really be handy having another cable at work

I'm happy with my usage, about a day and a half stand by and 12 hours or so usage...

... But I have noticed a strange occurrence.

I charge my iPhone when it is off. If I unplug the charger & then turn it on, it keeps the original, pre-charge usage figures and DOES NOT tell me that it has been plugged in since charge.

I can then ramp up some pretty impressive (false) usage figures.

To rest it to zero I have to quickly plug in to the mains whilst it is on. The 'previously plugged in message' does not appear but it sets the usage counter back to 0.

Now I have done 3 charging cycles I am happy to charge with it on, which stops this error though.

very content, I seem to get anywhere from 7-10 hours of usage now, thanks to restoring and setting up as a new phone , it worked for me:D

What exactly are you doing on the phone?

Got 6hrs usage and 16hrs standby yesterday and charged it when it hit 25% . I'm pretty disappointed in the fact that I could see the phone drop in percentage. ReAlly annoying.

I don't know how you guys are getting 8 hours battery life. Quite frankly I'm disappointed with my IP5's battery life. I used the phone very lightly and I use LTE pretty heavily and I got about 4.5-5 hours of battery life today. Granted my phone is new and I'll need to let the battery settle in, but I'm not expecting a dramatic improvement. Screen brightness is about 25%.

Over the last few yearsIve learned two tricks to maximizing Apples battery life:

1) Don't do anything they show you in the commercials

2) Buy a charging cable

I know it sounds like I'm being a prick but I'm serious. we should be getting a 2000mAh battery rather than an inadequate 1400mAh that is partially powered by excuses. Find my friends, Passbook, Turn by Turn directions, Geo Fenced reminders, shooting videos, watching movies etc are amazing but Apples obsession with "Thin" means that every iPhone is getting less battery than it needs to keep up with its features.

But IF you need to use those advertised features then get yourself a spare lightning cable. For the first week I heavily over managed the battery which resulted in a partially crippled phone to get me a charge that lasts until 4PM. But I've given up and bought 2 lightning cables and my battery woes are gone. Yes, it's expensive but that's part of being an Apple user.

I'm being serious too and I don't understand the obsession to have the thinnest phone on the market. We definitely need a bigger battery and it's a shame that it's becoming more common for Android devices to utilize 2000mAh batteries or larger. I want more battery life and not necessarily a thinner phone.

Screenbrightness at 15% now. On 3G this phone drains fast on hard use.
Been using the phone and surfing. 1hr & 38 min and its already 84%....

Here is my usage after first full charge. I really haven't had much time to do anything graphic intense but I have listened to music, shot videos, internet browsing, and played around with misc. ap/phone settings.

I'm pretty happy with its usage!

This is what I'm shooting for. About 10hrs usage with a day or so in standby. I just completed my second full battery drain/recharge last night. However, It might be unrealistic because I work in an office that has a very weak cell signal. But I'm going on vacation next week so I hope to be getting this :D

from the battery life thread...

16GB AT&T LTE and WiFi. Safari, text, email, Facebook, no games and no music. pretty damn good if you ask me. I actually couldn't get this thing to die and I was at 1% for 20mins until I decided to take a screen shot then plug it in. I love this battery.

pretty much the same usage as last time and got better results. obviously I could of kept going since I was only at 5% but I was ready for bed.

for those of you who say they have great battery life, how is the battery drain on your phones. I'm really frustrated with my phone after 5 hours it went from 100% to 83% and this is on a replacement phone for the same issue. I killed all apps and i get full signal of lte in my area. I barely manage to get 4.5 hours of usuage and this consists of basic stuff like looking at the home screen and watching the battery trickle down. Apple really let me down with iphone 5 with the inconsistencies, software (battery issues), and hardware quality control.

did you setup as new or from backup?

Think I have the battery issue fixed

I was shocked at the rate my iPhone 5 discharged; compared to my 4S, there was no comparison. The 5 was discharging at an alarming rate. Like dead by noon rate. Scary!

I researched it and saw others were in the same boat. So, I went in and turned off everything that was location-based I could live without.

One was LTE, it is not available in my area (Columbus, Oh) with AT&T yet.
Another was the location settings in the camera; I turned them off, too.

Set my mail to not push constantly, but I could manually check it just by opening it up. Works for me.

Lastly, I turned my screen down to approx. 85% of total brightness. You can still see it really well, I hate dim screens.

And now, after 2 1/2 hours, it's still at 96%. What a huge difference!

So try it; turn off everything location-based you can. Hopefully it will work for you, too.

Yea I did set it up as new. But doesn't really make difference. Just doing little things kills the battery on this thing. On the last one I did a dfu restore and set up as new also didn't do anything as well. I'm getting really frustrated as i barley even use the phone. I think I may get the note 2 or Lucia 920 when they come out. I really prefer iOS but apple has let me down.

return it and get another one.

Yesterday i took the phone to work and left charger at home with cable.
so the whole day from time i left around 8am i didnt use phone too much afraid that its going to run down midday. I turned off lte even.
The phone died after 6.5 hrs in evening. I used it sparingly the whole day.
:(

oh well, will see today as i got my cable but wont charge it till n hour i leave and see how it goes. did the network reset etc last nite.

I wonder how many of you with high usage numbers are listening to music with your screen locked. When I sleep, I listen to SleepStream.app with the screen locked. It only uses 10-15% of my battery but it counts towards my usage. If you just left music playing through your headphones, you could likely get days of usage (not standby). I think this is the reason for some of the high numbers. These people couldn't possibly be getting 9+ hours of solid use with the screen on the entire time.
