the reason why some people get 8 hours usage is simple. they use apps that don't kill the battery, such as messages, phone calls, music etc..

if you use instagram, twitter, THEN YOUR BATTERY WILL DIE faster

so simply put, if you don't use social media, your battery will be awesome.

i get this type of usage with twitter, instagram, facebook, safari and messages. no music whatsoever

5 hours, ~30 minutes
15 hours standby.

if i listen to music in the day, the usage goes up over 6 hours.

the people posting 8 hours usage, how bout you tell us WHAT you're doing on your phone. because i, too, can post amazing battery life if i leave my music player on all day.

That's strange because normally I use twitter and the music app a lot and only get 5-6 hours of usage before it dies but yesterday, I used twitter, safari, played some games, downloaded and used sound cloud, used YouTube and played a lot of music and got 8 hours 25 minutes usage with 5% left...

I think the battery is trolling

Alexander25, those are my typical numbers and even without social media. Maybe 5-5.5 hours tops. 2-3 bars LTE or 4-5 bars 3G. Either way, same usage time.

I'm scared to try to get a new phone this early. What is the conclusion on battery life on exchanged phones for everyone who has done so?

Im happy with it if it's accurate as it is just a third charge.

Every push on, 5 emails every 15 mins, all location services, no bluetooth. Screen brightness 100%.

We can conclude that WIFI battery life is fine. People having issues with battery life ties to cellular usage. I don't have wifi at home to test it though. Wifi is great but cellular isn't. The battery drops unlike any iPhone I've ever used on 3G/LTE.

I couldn't agree more! I'm fine for the most part on wifi. Soon as I leave home and switch to the cellular network, poof, away goes the battery!

This seems to be the case consistently. That's why I'm on the fence about trying to exchange because it may be a moot point. If everyone would use cell data and test it all day we could get closer to an answer. Even on 5 bars of LTE it drains just as fast as having 1-2 bars and this I have tested multiple times.

With LTE in Montreal I'm always with 2 bars. I turned off LTE and after testing my 3G speed, it is almost as fast as my LTE!
Hence, I'll leave my LTE off for the whole day to see if the battery improves.

Anyway I have a Geniu's appointment on Monday. I want them to test if my battery or antena has issues.

I don't want to charge my Iphone twice a day.

you "played a lot of music"

that explains your usage.

I'm not even using LTE. I disabled it since I don't have any coverage here.

Yeah. Drains just the same on LTE or 3G. It is the radio for sure and maybe the polling of towers with some other factors. I think I'll wait until the first iOS update and see what happens before I exchange.

The battery life on this is extremely poor, I can't imagine it when 4g becomes available in the UK, maybe it's an iOS issue?

i don't think it's entirely iOS (but it's some of it too), it's these third party apps that are heavy in power.

Likewise, I don't want to chance getting something inferior. I'm happy with this one. I'm always concerned about getting a replacement that brings new issues. Just need to get passed what's causing the drain, whether it's an app, a setting or just having to wait for an iOS update that will refine the software.

----------

Biggest draining app on my phone has been the browser. Other apps that use data are similar but safari is the top culprit so far for me.
Same here!! I had been using Chrome exclusively as I prefer it but then thought perhaps its continuously syncing my bookmarks in background was causing drain so I stopped using it but safari doesn't seem to be any different so I guess that wasn't it...

I tested a whole day with LTE turned off, and the conclusion i came to is LTE will kill your battery. I went through one replacement iphone for battery problems where the phone would only laste about 4.5 to 5.5 hrs of usage and the replacement was showing the same symptoms. I would get crazy battery drains leaving the phone off the charger at night from 100% to wake up six hours later and find it had drained 10%-15%. The main culprit causing draining is push email with LTE enabled when the phone is locked, it takes a serious toll on the battery. I wish there was an option to have wifi enabled even when the phone is locked like there is on the samsung galaxy s3. So trying to figure out how to get decent battery life I decided to turn off LTE. Battery drain now was 4% with 6.5 hrs of standby. I ended the day with 6 hrs of battery usage with about 20 hours of standby time, and had 30% battery left. I tried to get more usage but i got tired trying to kill the battery life. As a note I pretty much get 4-5 bars of LTE in my area 90% of the time. My day consists of 2.5 hrs of calls about 20 emails..50 or so texts...45min of bluetooth streaming of music...30mins gaming...and about 30 mins facebook...and about 30 mins browsing on safari and maybe 20 mins of youtube.

Strange. In standby with a low LTE signal and push email i will only drain maybe 5% overnight. There seems to be too many variables at play and battery life is too hard to compare. I've just concluded to suck it up until 6.0.1 comes out as the first update should make some changes to battery life.

Restore your phone and set it up as new. The difference is HUGE. Battery life is way better

Not really

I backed mine from icloud and got 8 hours, 30 minutes usage and 1 day, 2 hours standby

setting up as a new phone makes no difference at all compared to backing it up from icloud.

Same as when i used my 4s where on average got around 6 hours, 30 mins usage

i use twitter alot too along with safari and all the normal websites and alot of sports apps. I only use music when i workout or wash up.

so i do the same things with the 5 as i do with the 4S and so far in my first recharge got 8 hours, 30 mins usage and currently the 2nd recharge im on

4 hours, 43 minutes usage
23 hours, 30 minutes standby

39%

so well on my way to 8 hours usage again or close to it.

a certain improvement.

Horrible today.

Twitter, Instagram, messages.
LTE
BT off
WIFI off

Before and after turning "Automatic Date and Time" off. With mostly the same type of usage.

I've got to say my experience has been the exact opposite of you guys who are saying LTE kills your batteries.

At work, some days I'll get stuck on "4G" for a couple of hours at a time, whereas other days I'm on LTE either all day or the vast majority of the day.

I have consistently noticed a difference in battery life between days when I'm on 4G for long stretches and days when I'm on LTE exclusively - LTE days getting drastically better battery life.

Hi guy's

Was wondering if these numbers where OK with my new iPhone5? I have pretty much everything ON.. From push notifications to locations and BT, WIFI, LTE everything is running.

Played few angry bird games, have hour of internet use, some youtube and prob. about hour of talk time and this what i got from my phone. Is this normal?

PS: Phone runs very HOT sometimes....

Wow...that's not good battery life at all.

Sometimes I wish. . .

. . . that my iPhone did not have the Usage time indicator. Then I would not get into this group competition for usage. Usage varies so much with the app and the connection (wifi vs 3G vs LTE) that comparisons are just about useless. I went thru this with my iPhone 4, got an exchange, had the same battery life . . . etc.

Eventually, as with the iPhone 5, I will quit worrying about it. I have a flawless black 5 with a good color screen, so I should be happy.

I also wonder sometimes about the screen shots where there is a 9 hour usage with a 15 hours standby--How do you free up enough time during the day to get that much usage!

Anyway, enjoying the iPhone 5 a huge amount. A huge improvement from my iPhone 4.

I'm pretty happy with it. This is the first day I've had with it! I only turned off automatic set time at about 50%, and deleted+readded my email accounts even later than that, so I'm expecting a little better next round.
