Mine is definitely dependent on the cellular. If I'm using 4G and have weak service my battery lasts for 4-5 hours of usage. If I'm Wi-Fi or strong reception I usually get 8-9 hours of usage. That's nuts.

Ye 4G is a real drainer but it doesn't change the fact that you can post your battery usage here if you're using Wifi.
Try 3G , I think it drains less than 4G. I can't use 4G so I can't try that.

However - I still can't figure out why people are using 4G over WiFi when we're living in 2012. Wifi's are everywhere bros.

Sounds about right. The people who are getting 4-5 hours probably have terrible signal. Like 1-2 bars.

Nobody chooses to use 4G over Wi-Fi...it's not ubiquitous just yet. And I don't believe I can turn 4G (not LTE) off.

I have perfect signal at home. This battery is just a POS in my device (I ordered a replacement)

On friday I could swear I was on track for 6 hrs of usage. Today I have horrible battery life I will be lucky to get 4 hours. I even turned off my push email (don't need work email to be pushed on the weekend) and its still horrible.

So to recap, push off, wifi off (I was out of the house today), notifications minimal apps, location only on find my iPhone. 1 hours of light use, I did not do much today maybe 10 min of talking. I am at 70% battery life showing 1:15 of usage 4 hours off the charger. Something is definitely up with this thing!

My battery drains too quickly. I know it should be better as it is the second iPhone I have owned, and the first had very good battery.

I have owned it over a week before now hearing that I need to do a full drain and charge cycle. Is it too late- will I have damaged the battery by now?

"need to do a full drain and charge cycle. "

I am trying this now Jay.... have just had mine 3 days and though not as bad as some have reported not near as good as my 5 yr old first gen iphone.

Oh and what is "LTE" ??? I keep seeing this but don't know what it means?

I took mine back and finally gave up my android cherry to Samsung after 4 yrs on iPhone. I wanted a bigger screen, iphone5 was ok, but when it came to anything using cellular, even on 3G battery went down hard. So I went for the humvee of phones, the galaxy note 2. It's so funny the stark contrast in battery life threads for ip5 vs the note2
Nothing but praise

I'm still a apple fanboi at heart, love my ipad, but I think after the lackluster update and lesser battery life, I think I'll try the competition out for a few..

The battery life on my 5 is better than on my 4 but similar to that on my 4s. My 4s was much better than my 3Gs which was similar to my 3g but much better than my original iPhone. My 3gs was better than than my 4s as I had very few apps installed on it and there was no Siri. My original iPhone had better battery life than my 4 as the screen was smaller and didn't have Retina. The difference between my 4s and 3g was similar to the difference between my 5 and 4 taking into account the screen resolution, lack of apps on the later model and smaller internal battery configuration. The battery in the 5 despite being larger than in the 4s didn't last longer than the 3gs did compared to the 3g even though the size difference was the same.

I actually performed a DFU as a last ditch effort.

This morning I went from 100% to 99% with 4 minutes of usage,98% with 7 min etc. Now I am still at 100% at around 15min of usage, so I hope it did something good for me!

Will update if its still crappy

Is this a math problem? :)

No, not doing the drain cycling thing cannot hurt your battery at all. Once you do it, your battery life % indicator should be slightly more accurate, that's all. But, only do the full drain once a month at most. Fully draining a lithium battery repeatedly isn't good for it in the long run.

I noticed that if Airplane mode was on, wifi off, blue tooth off and all apps killed that the 5 was still trying to do something as ever few hours when I checked usage I had increased roughly 4 minutes of usage despite not having touched the phone.

Reading this thread makes me depressed :/ People complaining about 5 or 6 hours usage when I can get MAYBE 2 on my Galaxy Nexus. Hopefully I can get an iPhone 4S/5 soon...

Not a single place I go has usable wifi. Some people just don't have that option to sit on wifi all day. Also, 3G uses more power on this phone than LTE. AnandTech review is your friend.

Wifi battery life claims are accurate. 3G and LTE claims are a little optimistic. I manage 5.5 hours usage max on 2-4 LTE. No wifi access at all.

25 hours at 30% :D
granted that was 95% iPod usage with a tiny bit of internet...

I mostly stay on wifi. I'm either at home or on my schools campus when I'm engaging in heavy data use and I connect to the wifi.

Those 6 hours of use I posted above was from moderate use of music, instagram, twitter and texting.
