iPhone 5 battery life [Merged]

For me battery life on my iphone 5 with ios 6.1.4 is wonderful till I start to use 3G cellular. Without using 3G I get 2 days with about 10hours usage but if I'm using 3G, battery dies so quickly

I'm having trouble with my battery. Apple says it's fine but I'm not so sure.

My first iPhone 5 battery lasted much longer.
Back in April Apple replaced my phone because of a factory error and on this new phone the battery just doesn't last as long. I've been at work for about 5 hours and after making one call and checking a few emails and searching the web for a few mintues. The battery is already at 55% this is pretty typical since I got the replacement. It just doesn't seem to last a long time.

Any suggestions?

Don't charge it until it's completely dead, this will generate a Low Battery log-file that you can review later, and show Apple to prove that the battery really is bad.

It seems to be a common problem with many from what I've seen. Both me and my coworker with iPhone 5s have had pretty poor usage lately. Not sure if its related to any update, or just our imaginations running wild.

Me too. I've always had excellent battery life from my iPhone 5. It has plummeted over the last 2 or 3 weeks. I used to get home from work with about 50/60% and now I find myself having to stick it on the charger by 1 or 2 in the afternoon. The other day I watched it lose 10% of charge in half an hour with a bit of browsing. Yesterday I rebuilt the phone as new and today it's a bit better but nowhere near where it was. Nothing different it the way I use it. I'm at a loss to know.:(

Did the change coincide with updating the iOS to 6.1.2, 6.1.3 or 6.1.4? That's when my problems began...

I honestly couldn't swear to it but I am very tempted to say yes. That was my first reaction to think it was the upgrade. The truth is that I dont usually pay that much attention as the battery has been great since day 1. I've just been going through this thread again and turned off a few more things that I had forgotten about - some of the Notifications like weather, calendar and stock price (the default ones) and System Services in Location options. I'm just going to monitor it now.

Currently 9hours usage, 13 hours standby - 12% left.

It's been quite a heavy day.

Typically will get 5-8hours usage and 1 day+ standby doing what I usually do.

It's more than my 4S.

I'm on 6.1.2 and my battery life has been noticeably getting worse over the last 2 weeks. Tried cycling the battery but its made no difference.

Brightness slider is set to just under the 'Br' letters from the brightness settings title.

I used to get around 10 hours, now I get 6 if I'm lucky with about 18hrs standby
.

I've had an iphone5 since launch day but already had a replacement in December due to bad camera . Perhaps we're experiencing the battery losing its capacity now it's aged a few months?

For those seeing 9+ hours of "usage" as shown by the iPhone, a couple of questions:

Are you using PUSH email? If so, how many and what kind of accounts?

What kind of usage is this? Primarily Wifi or 4G/LTE? Gaming? Web browsing? Streaming? Calls and texting?

I never received that kind of usage with my iPhone, at first I could get 7-8 hours if primarily on Wifi (more than 80% wifi), and when on primarily cell I would get 4 - 5 hours.

But after the 6.1.2 update my usage changed, I would get around 5-6 hours best case scenario and primarily cell usage dropped to 3.5-4 hours max. Worse still, there seemed to be no rhyme or reason to the battery meter, it would sometime drop several percentage point at once, etc.

I'm trying to figure out the difference...

I have used my iphone 5 for about 70% web browsing, 20% apps that require internet, the other 10% is texting.

All of this is done on 4g LTE with Verizon, i never connect to wifi since i have unlimited and want to abuse the hell out of it.

None of my usage will include ipod or any other type of music or app that runs in the background with the screen off and accumulate usage time. With all of this in consideration my average battery life 4hrs, 5hrs if i am in a very strong signal area for the entire charge.

Running stuff like ipod or alike in the background i could easily make this number 8-10hrs+ and get these other usage numbers people are getting.

With my usage and on wifi i can get 6hrs or so the few times i have done it.

Same problem here after recent IOS upgrade. I did 2 things. Backed up, reset my phone to original, restored backup. This seemed to help a bit on battery life. I then turned off password protection and my phone battery life is better but still not at pre-IOS upgrade level.

I have recently found out that if I leave wifi off, the battery can last significantly longer. This is with LTE on, and push email on. Currently on 6.1.3

this is on pace for 9.75 hours of usage - insane!!!

How much of this was ipod or streaming music (i.e. no screen)?

The closest I can get at this point is 6.5 hours of usage and that's mostly wifi (> 80%). If I go primiarly cell I barely can get to 4 hours of usage...

That's my experience too. I think frankly the only way to get 9 hours of usage time is through playing music with the screen off. I don't buy anything else. I'm less than impressed with my phone's battery life. Usually get around 6-6.5. I have to carry around an external battery, otherwise my phone will crap out on me in the middle of a busy day. I find text messaging of any form, whether it's iMessage, WhatsApp or whatever, sucks juice like nobody's business.

Actually for me, texting or using messaging apps will log in more usage time, therefore looking like I get more time out of it. Still ends up the same though, more than a full day with a single charge, unless I play a game or something. Light usage mostly.

3G turned off and only browsing, Facebook, Instagram and e-mails (very little texting going on) on Wifi gives me about 8-8.5 hours of usage.

The only top level smartphone that can best the i5 is galaxy note 2.

Push to fetch all accounts made the biggest diff for me.

my battery is horrible on my 5

its only been a month maybe since i had it

i have applecare plus so how does it work if i wanna get a new phone? i dont wanna pay $50 for a new phone because the battery sucks.

im gettin 7 hours on standby, not sure what exactly that means but my battery wastes and all i do is check my email, twitter, instagram and on it a lot.

Ever since I've went up to iOS 6.1.4 my battery life has been HORRIBLE. On top of that my lightning connector went out so I have to rely on my Mophie & Icanonic battery cases to charge it. Kind of sucks but at least I have the ability to charge my phone still.

I actually used my iPhone very sparingly those few days, once in a while I would do a quick search on the phone, and check email every so often, with the occasional notification on LTE and phone call, maybe 10 minutes a day. I had let my iPad do most of the heavy lifting :p I hadn't mentioned that I had just got the iPhone replaced about a week before from the Apple store. I certainly could've pushed the battery a little more and I probably would've hit 5 days.

Its still phenomenal battery life to me knowing that I could still probably squeeze more out of it, if I hadn't used LTE.
