I say absolutely not. One of the things I like the most about the iPhone, and one of the biggest reasons I'm switching to it next month, is the form factor. It is the PERFECT size for a cell phone. Not too big, not too small. It's the same size as my Droid Eris, which I also chose because of the form factor. Anything bigger is just annoying.

The Droid X, the HTC Evo... yes, they are powerhouses, but who wants to put that in their pocket? I have other things I need to put in my pockets... keys, money, etc. I also like to be able to sit down with stuff in my pockets. I don't need a freaking PSP in there.

Amen. My gf's brother has a Droid X that he's always showing off and I can't imagine stuffing it into my pocket all day long.

No, imo the screen is perfect as it is. My only wish would be to make the iphone 5 a little bit shorter (as a device, leaving the screen as it is).

So if they increased the screen size for the iPhone, they would definitely have to increase the phone size, and I would definitely not want one. I don't care about this ppi, blah blah blah crap... I'm talking about physical screen size, and I think 4.3 inches is way too big for a cell phone.
Totally agreed, if anything 3.7" might be the furthest I go, I really do like the size of the iPhone at the moment, anything bigger and I doubt I'll get one, definitely not fond of these massive phones.

I have to politely disagree.

I'm a guy who wears slacks to work and shorts on the weekends.

I reserve my left pocket for my phone and right pocket for keys and money.

I have real world experience with both the iPhone and EVO in my left pocket.

Absolutely no problem!

Sure it may not look good in theory, but it works perfect in reality

If Apple was going to change the size of the screen they'd already have told developers about the change. Unlike the Retina Display issue, this isn't a simple matter of changing the resolution of the art work. This would require every app's UI to be completely rebuilt.

Exactly. I have the EVO 4G, and with no case, it is not that much larger than the iPhone. Thickness wise it is just a tad thicker, and is a bit wider, but not night and day larger. If the iPhone 4 fits in your pocket easily, the EVO will fit pretty similar, just a little bigger bulge, that's what she said :D

Saying one size is better than another is like saying green is better than blue
People have their own opinions, tastes, needs, etc.

Some prefer a larger screen and have their reasons
Some prefer a the current screen and have their reasons
Neither is right or wrong... just different

One person holds a phone and says "too big"
Another holds the same phone and says "perfect size"
Which is right? Neither

Buy the phone that has the most features you desire
And realize not everyone looks at things the same as you do

By the way... blue is better than green
And the current size is perfect

Did we know this one year ago ? In January 2010, 5 months before it came out, did developers know the screen size was changing for the upcoming iPhone4 ? I would think that was top secret at the time, five to six months before launch ?

The screen size didn't change for the iPhone 4. The resolution changed. Those words don't mean the same thing.

Please re-read my post. Resolution affects some of the app's art work (pixelation). A screen size change would likely break every single app's interface because of how Interface Building works.

Currently the poll is split 64 Yes and 62 No

If this is any indication of public desire, then I feel Apple should offer two sizes.

3.5" Classic and 4.3" New

For a gadget that costs nearly $1000.00 per year or more in service fees, I would like some choice in the matter.

Especially since its marketed as "The internet in your pocket" and not just a phone.

Many here argued the Air would never see a smaller size because Steve does not like netbooks.

Guess again

Wrong.

Screen size has nothing to do with resolution. If they bumped the screen size up to 3.8" or 4" and kept the same resolution (960x640) no programs would have to change. Their PPI would change from 326 to around 288 (for 4") but no human on earth could tell the difference.
---
I think Apple painted themselves in a corner with the iPhone 4 design. They can't make it bigger with those square edges, it would be horrible to hold and pocket.

I'm not sure where they can go from here.

Wrong.

You've never used Interface Builder, have you?

Edit: to clarify since you didn't read my post carefully enough, I didn't say that screen size had anything to do with resolution. I actually argued the opposite, but you were too busy being obnoxious to notice. I did, however, explain the when you change the size of the screen you will break every app's interface - this is because of how interfaces are built with Interface Builder.

I would like the option for different sized iPhone 5's...or at least keep the same shape and form factor of the iPhone 4 just stretch the screen to the edges and make it 4"

I'd be ecstatic with 4.3" :D

But I would settle for 4.0" :)

If it remains 3.5" I will be extremely pissed

Uh no. I won't be. If they make it larger, then I will be pissed. If you want something bigger, go to Android. Like Steve said, the apps are not going to rescale themselves. Making a bigger screen means lose retina display unless they scale up the resolution and then we have whole new problem at the app store like android, fragmentation. So, no. I am glad you don't run apple and Steve jobs does. Stay at 3.5 inch and leave the screen alone. Leave iOS then.

I don't understand how the apps get screwed up by making iPhone 5 screen larger ? I have the best phone out now the EVO 4G and apps on my 4.3" screen are no different than my brothers Nexus 4" smaller screen.

And 3.5" screen is like a wrist watch, just so small, it has to go.

No where have I or others indicated the iPhone 5 will have a bigger screen.

Calling others ignorant or stupid is insulting and considered an instantly bannable offense.

This is the only forum I frequent where I see so much arrogance and insults.

Please have respect for others!

Thank you
First, I'll admit suggesting stupidity was over the top. I'm not perfect. So apologies.

Anyway, so where you said you'd be pissed if the screen size stayed the same you didn't mean it would get bigger? I'm confused.

*I get that this is your opinion. I was specifically responding to your thought. No one elses.

I'll start out by saying I won't be upgrading to the 5th gen iPhone unless it has a bigger screen. Period!

New notification system and major iOS advance are also crucial in my opinion.

Don't plan on leaving AT&T as I have no issues with service here in Dallas. I just plan on waiting for the onslaught of Android devices that will be forthcoming now that AT&T no longer has exclusivity with the iPhone.

It is because of how iPhone apps are built. It's all in the toolset. Interface Builder, which is part of Xcode and what devs use to build the UI for their apps, wasn't designed to accomodate different screen sizes.

Apologies accepted thank you!

I simply stated "If it remains 3.5" I will be extremely pissed"

I'm not sure how that is confusing.

The discussion continues

You realize that if the resolution changes none of your apps will work until every single iOS developer rebuilds their apps, right? Wouldn't that piss you off more than the small benefits of having an extra half an inch of collective screen real estate?

Sorry, but leaving a platform for .5" is pretty nonsensical...

Wow, this is very very sad to hear!

I think it's time for Apple to re-tool and step up to 2011.

It's not like they don't have the resources or customer desire.

We have about 6 months to find out for certain.

I'm always open to surprises

The iPhone 5 MUST have a larger display!

Keeping the same tiny screen size on the iPhone 5 will be a deal breaker for me.

What good is the Retina display when it is so small? I read a lot on my iPhone, mostly tech and marketing blogs. I HATE the fact that Safari Browser does not have text reflow. Because of that, you have to pan side to side to read articles, and that is super retarded. Thank goodness for the Mercury Browser which at least allows you to increase text size and word wrap upon resizing.

But anyway, the Retina Display is overkill. The iPhone's 3.5" screen does not allow me to enjoy using it beyond a simple phone. If you just want a phone, fine. I understand your argument. But for those of us that don't want an iPad, laptop, notebook, or netbook, WE NEED A BIGGER DISPLAY!

The Evo 4G is the king of the hill when it comes to displays. Sorry guys & gals, but I would take that display over my useless Retina Display any day of the week. I have bad eyesight, and I cannot continue to squint looking at this microscopic display.

If I had my "druthers", I would take the 5" display on the Dell Streak and would be a happy camper. I don't need a tiny phone that "fits your pocket". I need something I can SEE. The bigger, the better. If you had the capability to use an iPad as a phone, I'd be lugging that around on a fanny pack like the old days of bag phones. So you can keep your micro-sized smart phones. Give me something for a blind bat 43-year-old.

Plus, what about surfing the net? Why would we be adding HSPA+ capability (and then 4G in the future) to a device that is so small that your internet experience would SUCK in the first place? With all this attention to faster download & upload speeds, we need a screen size that maximizes the experience!

Ok, I got it out of my system. So here's my opinion of the various sizes:

5" :D
Make it big like a Dell Streak and I'll pay anything! Bigger is better!

4.3" :D
Still would make me super happy. Love the jumbo size like the Evo 4G!

4.0" :)
Great improvement, I'd go for it. I love my wife's T-Mobile Touch 4" display. It's still a big plus and looks SO much better than my iPhone 4 Retina Display.

3.7"
They better not do 3.7". That's not even worth the trouble. I don't know if I would go for that. It better have a lot more bells & whistles to make up for small size if it does.

3.5"
Deal breaker! Keep the screen size the same, and I make my move to Android. Period.

Thanks! Comments?

5 inches?! You do realize this is a phone, not a tablet, right?? Do you want to carry your phone around in a laptop case, or in your pocket?
