Have been debating what to do with my scuffed 5, but ultimately decided the same as you. I normally don't have much luck with customer service or replacements. I'd probably return one with scuffs only to receive one with the screen in upside down or something. :)

im on hold with apple now trying to get an extra sync cable or two since i've been reading here that a couple of people got them for 'the inconvenience.'

edit: turns out, i would have to either have to send my phone in or get it replaced by at&t and have the issue resolved before any compensation of an extra sync cable or something would be sent out to me for the inconvenience, and that's not even promised. oh well! i'm not mad or anything, it would have just been cool to receive a free cable.

I guess I should have gotten somebody to get mine replaced for me. Can't believe that some who caused the damage themselves have even called and gotten replacements claiming it "came that way."

Nearest Apple store is almost two hours away. I hate debating stuff like that over the phone and never get anywhere. I had hoped there would be an email address or online support form, but couldn't find anything.

Also, I talked to someone today who has a black 5. They said theirs doesn't have any damage. They didn't offer to let me look at it, though, and didn't look like they would have if I'd asked.

Have two each black 16GB Flawless

For who ever is tracking I have the following. Both are Flawless.

Name: iPhone 5 (GSM model: AT&T and Canada)
ModelCode: iphone_5
Production week: 36 (September)
Colour: Black
Capacity: 16GB
Factory: F2 <--Had no listing.

Name: iPhone 5 (GSM model: AT&T and Canada)
ModelCode: iphone_5
Production week: 35 (September)
Colour: Black
Capacity: 16GB
Factory: F1 (China, Zhengzhou - Foxconn)

From the looks of the earlier post, most of the good ones came from C3 factory.

Because Apple won't exchange the phone easily, I have returned mine till they can get me a White 64gb Iphone 5 as a replacement. Mine wasn't just the nicks. It had a freakin HOLE in the circle around the actual camera lens which is a big no no.

And I heard today from AT&T that the plant that shut down, they sabotaged many phones before they went on strike and damaged them on purpose. So this is the reason why MANY have damaged phones.

This thread seems to have less and less posts per hour every day. This somehow looks promising to me. Maybe it's just me who wants to see it promising though. :D

Difference is every single iPhone 4 was affected. I don't consider both defects to be the same case.

i am just waiting for my replacement - they said this week now they say next week - whateve.....i have my scuffed/chipped up blackie that takes pics of purple ghosts!!

I saw the phone at Best Buy today on display... it really didn't seem easily scratched. I was surprised.

Got my black iP5 yesterday and the aluminum band is flawless. However, I don't think the fit and finish where the black strips at the top and bottom meet the aluminum backing is that great. Overall, I think the fit and finish on the iPhone 5 isn't as good as the 4/4S but it's certainly better than the 3G/3GS.

Please. If they really wanted to sabotage the phones, they'd have done lots worse than teeny, tiny little nicks in the beveled edge.

WHOAA look at this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0l4vpyQIafY&feature=youtu.be

Apparently FOXConn new about the issue but did nothing to stop it!

From a Business point of view. Apple knew that hundreds of thousands where nicked and dented but if they would have recalled all of them it would Cause a massive dely in deliveries and not to mention a company shattering expense to dumb and remake. So Apple let it go knowing that more than Half would not complain or even know about the issue. Thats why they've been replacing the phones fast so whoever found out would get a fast replacement and be happy. This was Finically smart for Apple but Morally Wrong for the consumers

i could barley understand what she said with her terrible english.

Send these pics to apple and the blogs. This is embarrassing for Apple. NO quality control.

I found this picture in another forum. Unbelievable!

I guess someone liked my picture. Where else did you see it..?

Wow, this picture was posted here in this forum like two pages back. Did they seriously slap their ugly watermark on there and claim it as their own?

Yeah they definitely did.

That was the replacement unfortunately. It also had a scratch much bigger than my original one had.
My second replacement will arrive tomorrow. I don't believe it will be better compared to two previous ones. If the one I receive tomorrow is still scratched. I will get a refund. I hate this receiving and returning game.

I have two nicks on the bezel of black iphone 5.
I went to the apple store @ eaton centre around 10:30 on wednesday to talk about the issue. While making the appointment, I wrote down as much detail as possible for the genius.

When the genius came by, he said he is aware of the issue and I am his 3rd person of the day who complaint about this very issue. Mind you..this is 10:30 in the morning and i am already the third person.

he opened the only replacement he had in store, and allowed me to inspect it. This one had a small nick as well. He said I could return the device to my provider (less than 30 mins) or try to come again for a replacement.

I also spoke to AppleCare support, and the senior advisor said that she can send a replacement phone, but it's best that I inspect them visually at stores that do carry a stock.

Some people posted that it is better to get a replacement through phone since it will be inspected? Is that true. How long does replacement take to get to you?

Yeah it's frustrating. I basically agree with you, if my second replacement has scratches I'll keep my original and bring it into a store on day 30 for a new one.

The replacement takes 1-2 days. The replacement says "Inspected by Applecare", but people (including myself) have received replacements with similar or worse issues as our originals.

My black 16GB arrived on Sep 21 and was, unfortunately, one of the many that has scuffs on the band. I'll be calling Apple Care tomorrow for a replacement. Would Steve have tolerated this? I've been an iPhone early adopter since launch day of 2007.

Edit

Nice try, Apple.

"iPhone 5 is made with a level of precision you’d expect to find in a finely crafted watch, not a smartphone.

Never before has this degree of fit and finish been applied to a phone. Take the glass inlays on the back of iPhone 5, for instance. During manufacturing, each iPhone 5 aluminum housing is photographed by two high-powered 29MP cameras. A machine then examines the images and compares them against 725 unique inlays to find the most precise match for every single iPhone.

Look at iPhone 5 and you can’t help but notice the exquisite chamfer surrounding the display. A crystalline diamond cuts this beveled edge. It’s what gives iPhone 5 its distinctive lines. Fitting for a phone so brilliant.

Aluminum and Glass Body

The back of iPhone 5 is made of anodized 6000 series aluminum — the same material used in Apple notebooks — with inlays along the top and bottom made of ceramic glass (on the white and silver model) or pigmented glass (on the black and slate model)."

Mine is a production week 33 phone and it is absolutely perfect. No chips, nicks, scuffs, dents, scratches, alignment issues, dead pixels, etc... I'm also pretty OCD about my stuff as well

They didn't mention anything about durability. Everything they said is true.
