went to the apple store to pick my phone up (reserved it from online last night)...minute i opened it i examined it in the light and found a nick on the bezel, figured since im still in the store why not just have them replace it?...so they replace it and i did not really inspect the new iphone because i was running late to class...i sit down to finally sync my phone and i find a small scuff on the bottom right corner...great! what do u guys think i should do? should i go in tomorrow and get a replacement? i mean since i did not inspect the phone fully (the second phone that is) untill i got home, i feel that maybe i some how scuffed it! (which is terrible quality cuz ive literally had the phone for 3 hours...) should i go in tomorrow and get a replacement?

The second handset sounds nicer than the first. Naturally I don't blame you for not wanting any cosmetic damage, but I'd rather have flaws on the bottom half/lower end (so my hand covers it) of the device.

Any chance of a photo?

I will try to take some in good light tomorrow. Incandescent doesn't help much.

I understand that the minute you leave the store there is no requirement for the store to replace. There was a post earlier in this thread of a guy who went through 5 or 6 handsets whilst still in the store.

yeah i saw that post....idk i think i might wait a week or so to see if apple releases anything regarding this "scuffgate"....i mean apple needs to do something because an enormous amount of people like me are getting scuffed phones right out of the box!

I mentioned earlier that my replacement had no scuffs/marks, but upon second inspection, it appears that there are two hairline scratches to the top and bottom of the phone.

It's seriously not enough to send back for, but it makes me wonder if any of these phones have come out perfect. (There have been some apparently, but I find it hard to believe)

Got my replacement phone in from Apple. Sent it in for a scratch on the screen and a scuff. This one has no scuffs but it does have a tiny hairline scratch next to the home button. I'm guessing I would probably be inviting more trouble if I exchange a third time.

I gotta laugh. Half a million people view this thread and Tim Kook says that this kind of damage out of the box is normal.

My guess is they were aware of this problem long before the very first iPhone 5 was sold... It's impossible to overlook scuffs, scratches, dents etc in that kind of big amounts of units as reported in this thread. Apple must have had put a green light to QC guys at Foxconn to accept flawed units and boxed them for sale. Apple probably counts on not so many people who'll be willing to replace or even notice those flawes.... For them it's a huge money loss. The more people want to replace the more money they loose...

UPS will call you to arrange collection, so just purposefully arrange for it to be collected after the new device arrives.

Thanks. The email had lead me to believe it would be the same guy dropping off and picking up the phone at the same time.

iPhone Customers: You can expect a UPS representative to arrive at the shipping address you provided, one business day from the day the repair was requested. The representative may arrive at any time that day, during standard business hours for your location. If the shipping address you provided is a work address, then please ensure that reception are aware and can locate you promptly. Please be prepared to give your original iPhone to the UPS representative upon delivery of the replacement iPhone. If you are not prepared to make that exchange, please understand that UPS will not be able to deliver the replacement iPhone. Do not include any other items, such as headphones or the SIM card, as they will not be returned to you. Also, please do not include any packaging as UPS will supply the packaging and send your original product back to Apple.

How do you reach the after sales team? The sales lady didn't seem to know who I was referring to.

One guy on the boards said "Ask to speak to a supervisor" as the general 1-800 number will only get you on the phone with someone who won't be helpful or accommodating. Whereas a supervisor will instantly jump on it and get it sorted.

One word. Scumbags. To many US moochers and thieves. Losses would be insane.

Yup you're right there are only thieves in the US. Get real!! I'm sure it has to do with some law somewhere. However, I'm in the US and was able to secure a replacement from the apple online store without putting a hold on my CC. This isn't a "white box" replacement. So think before you type next time my friend.

. . . I said that I was just going to keep the original, but the representative insisted that I try one more replacement.

Quite right too, I know it's sometimes disheartening with things like this, but the rep was absolutely right to insist you get a perfect phone & all credit to him/her for doing that.

I also think you deserve the award for the most screwed up phone with those buttons :)

Unbelievable.

No, never said there are only thieves. There is no law. They are securing their property from scumbags not returning the phones. And no you didn't. Nice lie.

Really, now i'm a liar. Here is some proof. There is no need for me to lie about anything.

I haven't returned my iphone yet , but the email says my returned model is on it's way to the Apple Return Centre.

I want at least 2-3 days to inspect, and play with both models before I return it to the courier :)

Interesting that Apple do this huh?

That's one thing you US guys have that I don't, a new tracking number and details of the shipped replacements :(

Please tell me how you made this happen, as detailed as you can be. Much appreciated!

I wish there was certain steps that I could tell you to follow. However, I think most of it is luck and just getting the right person on the first call. I do believe the most important aspect is the sales person putting in the exchange as a DOA, instead of just a normal exchange. Another key aspect is to basically outsmart them by telling them Apple Care can do nothing for you and you want a new box with a matching serial. Tell them you don't want a "brown or white box phone".

Ultimately, I think I got lucky this time and just talked to the right person. Good luck!!

It's a shame but I'm actually going to wait 3-4 weeks to get one from Apple rather than buying locally from Verizon. I just don't want to have to deal with the hassle of trying to get them to exchange one. The one they have for me has a minor ding in the bezzle. I was going to give it a go but after three days of them not being able to activate it I gave up and ordered one.

That e-mail is better scripted than what they sent me. I haven't received my tracking number yet, but i'm sure it will ship tonight.

doa?

It means dead on arrival. I know for sure Apple treats these exchanges differently than normal exchanges. I had a retina Macbook Pro shipped to me on launch day and it had a screw that would not tighten. I went to my local Apple Authorized Service Provider and he said it was stripped. I gave Apple a call and they classified it as a DOA. This allowed for them to ship me a replacement before I sent them back the original.

I received two emails which the Apple after sales told me to ignore. The last one above is just to say I have returned my defective iphone (Which I haven't) it's just policy I think so they can send me out a new one.

I haven't got a tracking number yet for the replacement, I am pretty sure I will get the replacement tomorrow or Friday though.

Yours will probably ship tonight or has done so already, I was told I might not get a tracking number, just the phone turning up

I am actually amazed some people have had their replacements shipped the next day!

Mine is 3-5 days according to Apple. I ordered my replacement on Monday.
