When did you speak to CS about the issue? I confirmed my exchange today and mine is sitting in "return request pending" but no "preparing for shipment" like yours shows

I talked with them on Sunday. To get more details on the order I actually looked it up using their order number and my zip code. When I login to the apple store to see the order tracking page it doesn't show the new phone. Must be a weird glitch or something. Might want to give manually tracking a chance instead of logging into the site.

It means dead on arrival. I know for sure Apple treats these exchanges differently than normal exchanges. I had a retina Macbook Pro shipped to me on launch day and it had a screw that would not tighten. I went to my local Apple Authorized Service Provider and he said it was stripped. I gave Apple a call and they classified it as a DOA. This allowed for them to ship me a replacement before I sent them back the original.

ok thank you, I have yet to find a customer service agent in the US who knows what the After Sales team is...

If I would take a guess, I would say after sales means management over here. Supervisors are always more helpful than the lower techs. Remember to be very nice to the lower tech though, i'm sure they convey your attitude to the supervisor before transferring.

Which order number? The one on the email with the pre paid return shipping label?

Nevermind. I entered the order number that was used to originally order my phone and it shows up. My replacement shows as "preparing for shipment" delivers Oct 4 - 9.

Just got mine today. It has a small chip out of the bezel just above the camera. Seems like it actually got bigger when I tried to clean it with a microfiber cloth, thinking it was just some dirt. If it's that easy to chip or scuff, I'm very disappointed.

I was at the apple store, after spending the whole day talking to apple care. They agreed to a replacement sadly the store had none in stock left. -.-.

I also happened to sneak a peak at the the notes the senior advisor left and it says about 30% of black iPhone 5's were being replaced due to damage.

How long do you guys think it will before you can go and get an iPhone5 from the stores with out any of the preordering/reserving crap? - Will they let me buy a phone, inspect it and instantly return it?

I am going to carry on returning the online replacements until they stop me or I am nearing the 14days for a full refund. or will it be 30?

All I want is a perfect iPhone out of the box. Apple is that really too much to ask. Standards are really slipping here I also had cosmetic issues with the mbp retina.

Yeah bad analogy as almost all cars on the lots are loaded with swirls and scuffs as dealers dont give a crap about the paint....so yeah bad comaprison, thats why detailers make great money, fixing up dealer paint issues....

Yeah true, BUT the difference here is that unlike car paint swirls that aren't obvious to the naked eye and dont make a great deal difference to the cars appearance, the chips and dings that some are discovering on their brand new out of the box iPhones are very noticeable (especially) on the black iPhone5, and to some degree ruin a beautifully crafted phone.

Plus, like you said, at least swirls and scratches on a car can normally be rectified by a detailer. Will/has there been a fix for the issues facing the anodized iPhone5...exactly, no.

I have a black one on order, so these scuff and scratch pictures really concern me... so much so that I'm seriously contemplating exchanging it for a white when it arrives. IMO Apple have a real situation on their hands, thus this shouldn't be ignored as I'm sure Apple are losing money on every returned iPhone 5.

So I went to the apple store today with my original iPhone 5 and and replacement they overnighted me. Both of which had chips, scratches, and discolorations. This 'genius' first off starts by telling me he will gladly replace it but he will not go through the store's entire inventory to find a phone that does not have scratches and chips on it. So he takes out the first one and looks it over and is all "Well I'm going to set this one aside for now" and goes to get another. This one, yet again has scratches and chips and even more discolorations than the other three sitting in front of me.

He then proceeded to tell me that I would have to pick between these two new replacements in front of me because he was not going to go through any more. I seriously almost laughed in his face as I just was like "Well okay then I'm returning it as I'm not going to pay hundreds of dollars for a phone that comes pre scratches and chipped". I couldn't even get the store manager to budge and open up more phones. I would have gone to another apple store but I really didn't have the time to be doing that all this week.

Got my iPhone 5 returned and the refund should be posted to my card soon.

So ****ing irritated.

I think I will try for a white one next. And if the brand new one has anything scratched or discolored or chipped I won't purchase it. They can just keep opening up a new one or ill just ****ing go elsewhere.

Yea, I'd have told them they could give me cash if they wanted to act like that. Tell them you lost your card or something.

Im still disappointed Apple has yet to officially address this issue.

On a side note, I personally feel like the lighter iPhone 5 compared to the 4 isn't substantial enough in my hands, the new lighter weight isn't really a big selling point for me. I have watched several iPhone 5 tear down videos to see if the aluminium band could be replaced by someone producing after market bands. I think titanium would be the best bet(weight and cost wise), aesthetically tungsten carbide or cobalt would be the coolest(if its even possible). Anyways does anyone know if the aluminium bad can actually be replaced? Does it come off from the back, or is it one complete unit.

I think it was Phil Schiller (unless Cook has made a statement now, too).

And if it was the exchange with Schiller, technically, the person who emailed him was pretty vague. They didn't specify whether the damage was fresh from the box or after they dropped it on pavement.

If it is a refurb, it can't really be used. Nobody would have had a chance to use it, yet. :)

Yes, I stand corrected. My apologies.... well sit corrected anyways.

Its one complete unit they went for a unibody design.

My black & slate iPhone has one very small scuff on the bottom left corner on the back half of the frame.

I agree that with paying $300 for the 32gb, it should be flawless, but with all these issues getting replacements, I rather just not go through all that.

I always had bumpers on my iPhone 4, and I'm planning to do so with my iPhone 5, so I'll never even see the scuff.

Frankly, as long as it functions flawlessly, I'm not going to worry about it.

Have been debating what to do with my scuffed 5, but ultimately decided the same as you. I normally don't have much luck with customer service or replacements. I'd probably return one with scuffs only to receive one with the screen in upside down or something. :)

I found this picture in another forum. Unbelievable!

For those that are going to apple stores to get their replacements, it would help if we knew the locations of the stores. Thanks!
