Question is. Would scuffs be covered by the 1 year warranty? I'm also a naked user. My iphone 4 is two years old, and apart from a crack from an ALMIGHTY drop, its pristine.

Come on now... they didn't color it with a magic marker that is just going to rub off by just touching it. If you look at his pictures you can clearly see in a couple of them that the phone was scratched by something. Just like any phone, it will eventually show signs of wear but if you take good care of it the finish is not going to rub off

I think you're absolutely right...folks will be polishing for that cool distressed look, and vendors will sell the backplates in all colors by the boat loads, which will be super easy to make since there will be no need to drill holes for the camera lense..

Definitely.

There was a thread back in the 3G/3GS days for people who had a scratched (chrome) bezel at the time. A guy wet sanded the chrome with 1000 and 2000 grit to make it appear to be an almost aluminum-look finish. It actually turned out very nice - rather than that awful chrome finish.

I'm 100% sure these "guides" will be popping up within a week or two. I'm actually excited to see someone do it (maybe just the bezel, leaving the back black would probably be cool) - I surely won't be the first one to try it though. :p

Exactly. That phone took a hit and or scrape against a hard surface. There's no way that happened by just holding and using the phone, or slidin into and out of a pocket. Looking at pictures from the announcement event, lots of people had their hands all over the phone. They had it in there hands, placed it on tables, twisted and slid it around, took it in and out of the display dock, and it looks pristine.

The black model is the best looking phone to date, however the moment you forget and put it in your pocket with your keys or coins the metal (al) back is done. Its surely one phone thats going to look beat real fast like....

This is why you keep one pocket for iPhone, and the other for keys and coins. That's what I do.

I've had a dedicated pocket for it since 2007 (naked too). Pretty difficult habit to break.

If the exposed Apple logo is back on the iPhone 5 (like the original through 3GS), it's going to get scuffed up as hell regardless of what color you get and I'm more concerned about that.

Don't forget all the people sliding the ip5 against a ip4 for size comparison.

...except the last two iPhones.

I don't mind scuffs and all but I also don't feel a tool needs to be polished and treated like artwork in order to not get scratched from daily use.

Yes.. when you buy them from Pawn America

Never used a cover with my iphone 4 and didn't drop it more than once or twice in a year and a half but in direct light you could see a TON of little scuffs on the sides and back!

OK the scare is I have a 4S what is 2 months old, and it has marks on the side from light scuff marks.. Mind you keep in a case and only take out from time to time to dock on computer.

If everyone of these marks is going to wear the black away then iphone going to look in much worst shape then the 4S(that is only in two months). Mind you the screen nor the back glass have a mark to speak of. So the sides in my eyes take the most wear. It is a game breaker ? No but I honestly think white was better choice now.. call me crazy.

It was bound to happen..... People just love finding these gate issues ever since the antenna FUD.

To be fair, I returned my 4 because of antenna issues so it was real. While I would expect the black antenna finish to wear off, if it happens easily then its a manufacturing problem.

Right...Plus they probably did a penetration test on it to see just how durable the black is.

What? No, I don't think you realize how anodizing aluminium works. The surface is chemically treated to stain the surface there is no penetration, once the stain is scratched it will show bare aluminium.

If you're really worried that much get the white model which will use a much more vague barely white stain and would be more than likely less noticeable.

Actually the more I look at the white iPhone pictures not even sure it's even staining the white back, might just be a simple brush.

My anodized black watch after about 8 months of use (worn 2-4 times per week). That's not bad considering my wrists are rubbing against a desk 90% of the work day. I think it kinda looks cool though...

if it's *that* easy to rub off, maybe someone will come up with a good method to get all of the black off of there, leaving it bare. Sure it'll look like the iphone 4 and 4s but I'm sure someone with OCD would rather have it be pure metal-looking than black with rubbed off sides.

is it possible that a black permanent marker could remedy this situation? I only say this because a friend with iodized rims did this fix and didn't look to bad. Much better then alum showing through.

That's actually very easy you can use a variety of household cleaners oven cleaner, jewelry cleaner, etc.

Mind you the phone will look bad because the rest of the phone would be black.

You do know what you said sort of sounds like, "besides the gaping hole in his head the gunshot victim was perfectly fine..." :p

Like I said in an earlier post, I didn't say it wasn't real. Just a fact that all phones( that don't have a dual antenna) will have signal loss if you cover the antenna. Yes, the iPhone 4's external antenna design made the drop worse. The 3GS had signal loss, my moms old LG flip phone had signal loss, etc when you covered the antenna.

I am just sick of everyone looking for the new "gate".

I start to question my choice of color, maybe I should have chosen black, wearing the wear with pride.
