I have had a Macbook Air for almost 2 year that I take everywhere with the same anodized aluminum finish.. It's been banged around in my breifcase hundreds of times and it does not have one noticable scuff yet.. Its a very hard metal!

I think it's very simple.. If you drop it onto cement or rub it against another hard metal it will probably scuff, if you are ok with taking that risk (like me) then there won't be an issue. If not, then buy a case..

I start to question my choice of color, maybe I should have chosen black, wearing the wear with pride.

I think the wear is going to look pretty awesome. My watch is gunmetal but has worn away over the last two years to a bright silver underneat in spots. It looks pretty awesome now.

This is why you keep one pocket for iPhone, and the other for keys and coins. That's what I do.

Yeah me too, but their been times (because I'm right handed) I dropped my keys in the same pocket before I realized my phone was in my key pocket. Moving about in daily life and fussing with trying to get sleepy kids out of the car tends to take your mind off the trivial insignificant concerns.

Easy way to preserve all of this aluminium and/or hide any scratches...

Buy a case that covers the sides and back!

The glass is rock solid unless you drop it and shatter, it's pretty much scratch proof I put my 4S though hell.

As someone said in another thread, there are different grades of anodization. the 6100 class will scratch as its only mm's thin and aluminum underneath.

maglites are a higher grade and will not show scratches. know that going in and be careful to keep your phone looking nice as long as you can

FYI the white is anodized as well

FYI the white is anodized as well, just like the laptops.

if it's *that* easy to rub off, maybe someone will come up with a good method to get all of the black off of there, leaving it bare. Sure it'll look like the iphone 4 and 4s but I'm sure someone with OCD would rather have it be pure metal-looking than black with rubbed off sides.

The problem for me and sure many others here is that I sell my iphone after a year to get the new one. Actually my 4S 64 gig on eBay as we speak. So keeping the phone in as good of condition as possible is very important to me. If it is the case the white iphone keeps better then black I would have gone with black. I guess I should have put alittle more thought into the decision.

It depends on how well anodized it is, and how thick the anodized layer is.

Case in point: I have a couple of mil-spec flashlights that are anodized black. They've been run over by cars, knocked into countless places, smacked hard against rocks and against other pieces of metal, and they still look good as new. The anodization on them is extra thick, and the only exposed aluminum are the parts where the manufacturer etched the model and serial numbers at the factory

Might look like this:

As soon as I saw the anondized aluminum I was like sweet, but its gonna scratch. Kind of like my cheap laminate floors. Look awesome until you scratch it and see the crap that's underneath.

Like I said in an earlier post, I didn't say it wasn't real. Just a fact that all phones( that don't have a dual antenna) will have signal loss if you cover the antenna. Yes, the iPhone 4's external antenna design made the drop worse. The 3GS had signal loss, my moms old LG flip phone had signal loss, etc when you covered the antenna.

I am just sick of everyone looking for the new "gate".

I don't want to get into a whole thing, but my 3GS never dropped its signal completely, but my 4 went from full bars to no signal just by holding it normally in my left hand. The fact that my 4S only lost one or two bars, where my 4 lost them all, while holding it the same way proved to me that the 4 had a bad antenna design.

I didn't bitch about it, I just returned my 4 and went back to my 3GS.

"Ditching the glass back and reducing the thickness of the glass panel on the front has affected the design of the metal band around the edge of the iPhone. It is now chamfered and while that looks pretty, we've already noticed that on the black model the edge has started to wear, revealing the shiny silver aluminium metal underneath the "slate" coloured coating and, indeed, we've witnessed it on two separate models, ruling out a fluke manufacturing error.

These small scuffs will catch the light and make the phone look visibly worn. We suspect that it won't be as noticeable on the white model because the metal edging is silver, so that's worth bearing in mind when you come to order your colour choice."

Black don't crack... but it scuffs

I'm not sure how much this will bother me yet, if it is in fact an issue.

I went with Applecare+ over an expensive case this time, though, so I'm fine. I sell and upgrade every year as well. This time I'll have the option of paying a deductible and getting a new one to sell with a remaining deductible + applecare, which should easily sell for the most one could get.

honestly the $150 for Applecare+ I wouldn't get back selling on eBay.. That would $100 for it & $50 for new phone. So $150, I doubt price of the iphone going to drop $150 for scuff marks..

I think I have 30 days and if the iphone wears alot I look at returning it and getting the white one. Not sure how I can even do what because I would be without a phone. I figure when I return it they wont have a white 64gig iphone in stock.

The 4S has a dual antenna design so it uses the top antenna if the bottom antenna has a worse signal.

Your drop is pretty bad. I only drop about -20 dbm when I cover the antenna on my 4( which is about a 2 bar drop).

This is why you keep one pocket for iPhone, and the other for keys and coins. That's what I do.

Left pocket: keys
Right pocket: iPhone (naked)
Left back pocket: coins
Right back pocket: wallet

I should now patent my 'Method of using jeans pockets to carry items'

Hmm... Looks like "Scuff Gate" hasn't been really nice to the phone.

I suspect he dropped it.. There's no way the black will wear in normal use. Apple is very experienced in anoziding aluminium.

Also look at this photo.. On the right side.. Looks like scratches from a drop or something??

I couldn't imagine Apple releasing a product that scuffs so quickly (and noticeably) within a few days of use. That's terrible.

Exactly what I was saying.. In those 2 photos its obvious he dropped it or rubbed another hard metal against it. That kind of scuff/scratch doesn't happen from normal use of a phone

If the phone scratches like that from a drop, that doesn't really make it any more acceptable considering that most phones will face some bumps/drops during its lifetime.

Could you imagine Apple releasing a phone you couldn't hold the normal way without it dropping signal? Never say never.

When you think you've seen everything here, something else comes along and you're like "huh?"

This phone isn't out yet, so why is there a beef?

This place get crazier and crazier every day, god I love it though!

But this is nuts, can we all reserve judgement until the masses have it? IMO this will only be an issue if your drop the phone, but any phone would get messed up when dropped.

Side note? What do some of you carry in your pockets that your so worried about it scuffing? I imagine all of your with your George Costanza wallets and giant keys!
