The solution is simple. Get a white model and problems solved. If you are going to get a case put on it anyway, who cares what color it is.

In the case of the white 5, I'd get a case just to cover the back. it would actually improve the aesthetics.

flaking off when cleaning it with a microfibre cloth?!?! WTF?!?!

Im switching mine to a white model this week to avoid all the hassle (even though the black is lovely to look at).

They say once you go black you never go back, but I reckon when you go white it will be alright :D

Makes no sense to switch color just because a batch of black iPhones has defective anodized coating that's clearly not normal.

Ditto. Perfect black model but sod it.....swapping for white

ANOTHER 1ST TIME POSTER! ;)Well after reading this forum and initially worrying I had ordered the wrong colour due to it being easy to scratch I opened my beautiful, and oh my it is (was) beautiful black 64gb iphone 5 whilst my girlfriend recorded it incase i was accused of causing any damage.....
It had silver showing slightly on three of the antenna bands and on the fourth a shiny silver chip along with another chip near the earphones port, I was gutted so rung my network provider and ordered a white one.......
Turned up today, first inspection woohoo looked mint then i peel the film of the back to find a 1cm long, deep scratch and a tiny dent, thought ill just have to try and live with it, then what do ya know, lights out and notice I have the light bleed near the unlock button
Im gutted, sent my info in to watchdog (im in the uk and recommend others in the uk doing the same) the responce from schiller or whatever his name is was a joke, this needs to be addressed!
needless to say, im getting rid of the white (black is so much nicer, and everyone who ordered black originally you know it is your 1st choice your just telling yourself its ok to put up with white, its not its a £699 phone!
Ill get another one when they sort out quality control!

i have cleaned mine relentlessly with a optical grade microfiber, and nothins has flaked off, some people will post anything to get others riled up. Really, you really think a microfiber would scratch it? I dont, and it hasn't on mine and i wipe a microfiber on it maybe every hour....

This means nothing. Because it has not happened to you it means it doesn't happens to others? Tell me you don't actually have this train of thought with other aspects of your life also?

Hello people I received my phone (32GB black) on the 21st and it came with a 1 mm dent in the bottom of the phone. I just called Apple customer service and they are sending me a replacement phone. The lady on the phone was really nice however she cannot grantee me as the new phone will or will not have scratches/dent. If the replacement phone is in worse condition compare to my original one then I will keep my original one. Lets all hope for the best!!

No, simply giving the opposing view is all genius. One guys says its flaked off, so I say hey, do the same thing no flaking issues, it's called situational comparison. And next time, quote my entrie post, dont pick what fits with your side of things.

I know the weeks don't mean anything in terms of damage but I have been seeing a lot of flawless devices coming from C3 during Week 35 (including mine). This is the third today that I've noticed.

Hope people get better look soon!

I've seen a lot on this thread which were damaged ones from C3 week 35, mine included.

Your statement is almost as silly as Apple's. Congrats using your first oxymoron.

More of a joke. Forgot the sarcasm tag. But if anodization made the iPhone 5 more resistance to scuffs and scratches apple would have made a huge deal about it. Instead they have a comical video from Ive explaining how beautiful and shiny the 1mm chamfered edge is on the antenna.

It is odd that phones are shipping with damage. But the finish is pretty frail. Not much better than the black anodized 3rd party antenna/housing I got from china for my iPhone 4.

Maybe in a 6 month period time all the anodized parts look just raw and we can enjoy a new design without even having to buy a new phone.

Apple... Genius.

Got my replacement Flawless!!!:D:D:D

ps: week 36 chengdu

Did you get your replacement shipped to you (meaning, did you buy the iPhone online)?

If so, did you have to send your original iPhone back first and then you got your replacement...or could you ship back your phone after you received your replacement?

The Apple CS rep told me I had to send out my phone first, then they would send me a replacement.

The problem is, I don't have a backup phone to use :(

And this is different from the iPhone 4/4S how? Jobs was very much alive when the iPhone 4 was introduced. Makes no sense.

My wife has a 4S and it is much easier to pick up off a flat surface than my iPhone 5. I've placed the phones down on the table and picked each one up. I think it's because the antenna band on the 4S sticks out a little bit from the side and it makes it easier to grasp with your fingers, being a little thicker helps too. With the 5 you've got to grasp it with you finger tips and be careful that it doesn't go flying out of your hand when you pick it up. I think if they had rounded the edges on the 5 instead the chamfered edges it would be easier to pick up and the rounded edges would be much less susceptible to dings and nicks. I think it is a case of form winning out over function.

I used ERS they just put a hold on the CC and ship the new one to you first. When you return the new one they lift the hold

You said directly after your asinine statement 'some people will post anything to get others riled up'. What that means MENSA, is you are inferring he is lying for the sake of angering people. This is not simply giving an 'opposing view'. You view the world your way and lack empathy. You are not alone. Plenty of people don't possess the ability to recognize others perspectives and in turn assume their viewpoint is the only possibility. Work on it.

Why oh why did the rep tell me I had to find a backup phone to use?! The iPhone is still under warranty...why didn't she tell me about ERS?!

Yet at the same time, I just received an email saying my iPhone replacement will be shipped in 3-5 days and I have yet to return my iPhone.

I'm so confused.

I'm hoping she is wrong and I get the replacement before I have to send out the original phone. Sigh.

I think she is wrong. There has been alot of misinformation given to and coming from the sales reps.
