Got my black 16G today. I see no defects. My wife has yet to open her white phone. I'll let you know.

Another area to look out for is significant contrasting colours of the sim card tray and bezel.

I compared my 1st and 2nd handset and the 1st had a complete mis-match of colors. The tray can be significantly darker than the bezel or vice-versa.

Wow. Now I'd call myself OCD, but I think I could live with that.

i have the tiniest of marks in the corner of my phone.

Its so frustrating... ive been waiting on a case that should of been with me 4 days ago!!

i was thinking of kinda colouring in this tiniest of tiny dots with a black marker......

i have a week if i wanted to return it but i might have to put it in a sock till my case gets here.

Cant believe apple made a phone that scratches like this. when you pay £525 for a phone you expect a good few months before any sign of wear and tear. The slightest knock and It seems to be removing that coating on the antenna.

these expert sites should have guided everyone to get cases

so i went down to the apple store to replace (ive had the phone for 24 hours) and they said they could NOT do it! they said i can only do a return/exchange and since they have no stock im SOL...what do i do now?? should i just call apple care and discuss this with them?

Why is this? You have 30 days no questions asked, if they wont exchange just return it and buy another one when they come in stock.

I have to say complaining about a shade difference between the tray and the rest of the metal around it is a bit much even for me.

Just got off the phone with AppleCare and Apples Sales Support. I explained to them the phone I received in the mail had chips in the bezel and the new replacement that I got at The Apple Store also did. I told them what the store told me, which was they would only do 1 exchange for cosmetic issues.

They apologized very much over the phone and are expediting me a new iPhone and didn't ask for a credit card number or anything for a hold. They just said the new phone will come with instructions on how to mail the old one back.

Can they do this if you wanted to switch models, say from 32gb to a 16gb or vice versa? Same color

Perhaps Apple needs to try to bring some jobs back over here in America and/or address their plants...AGAIN.

This is CLEARLY an issue of quality control, most likely in clamping/handling throughout the assembly line.

Yet work conditions, surely due to production demand and time rush, are so rough already that workers are commiting suicide and rioting, while buyers here are complaining about their ALMOST good work.

will apple give you a new one for this defect? i have the same issue with mine.

I'm wonderin' how iPhone5 users will piss in Turkey. There's no official Apple Operation here yet. (They just hired GM and workin' to enter Turkish market officially)

Here in Turkey you can only buy iPhone's from Carriers and Tech Markets all are unlocked (yes this is good for us) After sale services given by 3rd parties (there are only 3 operators and 3 after sale services workin' with all devices BlackBerry, iPhone, Samsung whatever they are for 80million population) And there is still no (and won't be) replacement policy like UK/US and any other country. (here you have contact after sale services for such problems. You can ask for a refund from where you buy your device, they'll place you refund if they don't see scuffs like you did because they can call it user-fault and will direct you to after sale services anyways) [There are better ways to get your money back but most of the users are not aware w/ their right -glad I'm- and when I had such problems I directly contact to management team of the company (by usin' my companys name) not customer representatives since they are just workin' like secretaries and readin' what supervisors gave them.]

All they can do is sendin' your device to aftersale services and since old devices (any brand) still makin' good money here (we have to pay about $1500 to $2000 for iPhones) no one keepin' their old devices.

After sale services make ppl wait up to 20 work days (about 25days) "legally" and with such problems scuffs etc. iPhone 5 users have to wait 20days w/out their devices and will get reply "user fault" I'm sure on that since I had such problems and still hearin' many problems about such situations w/ any brand smartphone.

You can check number of complaints about aftersale services here: KVK, Teleservice and Genpa

Most of the damn ppl here are not rich @ all. %50+ percent makin' $350/400 monthly but they still use $1500 BlackBerry's, iPhone's, Samsungs etc. just to say I have this! (Fuuu credit system, they pay up to 36months w/ small amounts)

Some clever guys bring iPhone5 16gigs from USA and sellin' for $2500 and there won't be damn nano-sim till january here o_O (what a moron buyin' device and waiting 2months to use it?)

Anyways with such customer services here, Apple will kill itself in Turkey. They better watch and work for these and bring "good produced" iPhone5's here not "factory-scratched" ones. If ppl have such problems w/ $1500-2000 devices here they never gonna buy any iPhones again...

I'm buyin' my iPhones from UK and currently using iPhone 4S as a second (I've BlackBerry Bold 9900) and I skipped iPhone5 due these problems since I won't find anyone to support me if such things happens.

I think I'll wait for iPhone 5S and can check new full touch BlackBerry (BB10) if it comes ready that day (It should)

As an iPhone 4S user (which I really like it) I disappointed with iPhone 5. Looks like a downgrade comparing to iPhone 4S (talkin' design and quality based)

And no official response? That's where #iFail happens. This is even more disappointing than cosmetic issues. They should do the best and release official statement as they did w/ antennagate...

(sorry for possible grammer mistakes)

You are missing my point. I agree it would be unreasonable complaining and obtaining a replacement for this particular issue alone. I'm more highlighting that these sorts of problems (along with scuffgate) are evidence of a lack of consistency and a detachment from their core business values in manufacturing. These issues begin to destroy essential parts of the apple brand image. In this instance, perceived quality and workmanship. I'm sure every customer on this forum who has experienced a scuffed or damaged handset will think twice before opening the box of an apple product in the future.

So, the phone was "finally" just released in Sweden 1½ hours ago and mine is flawless out of the box.

I'm in the same boat 2 tiny dots but my OCD is in overdrive, took a marker to the worse one that was staring at me and it's all but gone. :)

It is obvious that there are quality issues with the iphone 5. It could be limited to a few batches or endemic to all the devices. There is a possibility that the anodizing process might have been fixed or will be fixed and future devices might not have any discoloration. But faulty anodizing is not responsible for the chips and dents. It could be a fundamental design flaw. It could be that the material is too soft or the bezel is too thin. So what is the point in exchanging for a new device unless things obtain certain clarity? Isn't it better to get a refund and wait till things are fixed if at all they get fixed? The least that Apple could do is clarify that the problem is restricted to a few batches and that design is fundamentally good and recall all the bad batches. But Apple's reluctance to address the issue points to its arrogance and the short shift it gives its customers.

And I cannot understand the attitude of customers who are willing to accept a damaged device when they could as easily get a refund. And if Apple refuses to refund, a class action suit is in order.

exchange black to white

To those who tried to exchange their scuff black iphone 5 to white, are you successful to exchanged it? I want to exchange it.Thank you.

Just received my replacement iPhone 5. Mine is white. The back has a half inch scratch. The front has a few minor defects that I could live with. I'm giving up on the 5. I don't have time to keep returning this for one that may not have any damage. Disappointing!

Well, you can get a refund.

My second replacement: week 30. I have a feeling that Apple know all these scratch or dent out of box stuff. However, for the new record 5 million, they just don't want to be perfect any more. Apple has the best customer service. But I prefer having a good one without any exchange or return. A little disappointed about this scratch out of box issue.

Is this the start of something bad?:(

My wife has a 4S and it is much easier to pick up off a flat surface than my iPhone 5. I've placed the phones down on the table and picked each one up. I think it's because the antenna band on the 4S sticks out a little bit from the side and it makes it easier to grasp with your fingers, being a little thicker helps too. With the 5 you've got to grasp it with you finger tips and be careful that it doesn't go flying out of your hand when you pick it up. I think if they had rounded the edges on the 5 instead the chamfered edges it would be easier to pick up and the rounded edges would be much less susceptible to dings and nicks. I think it is a case of form winning out over function.

I'm sorry but you and anyone else who has problems picking this phone up off a table really needs to take a training course on how to PICK THINGS UP. Is this a joke? you cant pick it up?!?! Truly baffled.
