Nobody with this problem?

I had the same problem with the 4s, replaced, 5 on day one for the same problem has been replaced 2 times, but it was much more visible in the black is not known, but there is also there.

It all depends on that with which you're comfortable. I believe new products should be flawless. My 5 was flawless out of the box. A few days later, I found a nick in the chamfered edge. Just typing "chamfered" makes me feel pretentious for some reason.

Anyway, ordered a case after I saw it even though I never used a case for my original or 4. Two days later, I changed my mind and cancelled the case order. No new nicks since then. I'm careful with it, like I have been with my other iPhones. Happy so far.

What would I have done had the phone been imperfect out of the box? Not sure. My original never had a single mark through 2+ years, case free (wait, not true, the metal bezel on the front had micro scratches). The 4 had very small, hard-to-see scratches on the back and stainless band after two years, also case free.

Bottom line? Do that with which you're comfortable. It's your money.

Please read my post properly, i said the 4S was an upgrade on the 3GS not the 5, i know the 5 is a superior phone thats why i bought one, i only returned it because of the scuffs etc. I am only a light user and the 4S will still be an upgrade for me and as for LTE i am in the UK and we are quite a bit behind you in terms of LTE.

Your are only causing yourself to cringe because you cant read properly.

Oh you're from the UK. I get it now.

I was thinking you were in the US and upgrading on our assy US providers.

it's stupid because regardless of how fast and cosmetically "awesome" you think the 4s is it doesn't support LTE which is the main point of even using the iphone 5. Been reading this forum since the release and I cringe when people try and tell themselves the 4s is a superior phone. we're not talking about a rolex or something where only cosmetic changes are upgraded, the entire innards of the phone was upgraded, the 4s technology is already old, why spend any money in last year's inferior model which is nosediving in becoming obsolete?

Ah yes, a technology that most of the world outside of America doesnt give a crap about yet makes the iPhone 4S worthless despite costing half the price of an iPhone 5.

LTE will only take off when companies realise that no one in the general public wants to pay ridiculous amounts on a contract to use it over a reasonably priced standard 3G contract. And when low end Android phones begin supporting it, which will take forever.

Paying twice the price for a minor speed bump, and a longer screen which barely any apps support, and wont do untill at least next year judging by the slow uptake. Only the sheep care about the 1.something mm reduction in thickness. People who actually use the phone's capabilities would no doubt have preferred the same thickness but a bigger battery.

Why buy a scuffed up IP5 now when in a years time the 5S will be out and the sheep will once again go forth to upgrade, resulting in eBay being flooded with cheap used iPhone 5s. Some will be scuffed, but a lot of people will take care of their overpriced IP5s with cases all year round.

The beauty of iOS is that spec boosts are very negligible in use from one year to the next. If it ever becomes more significant than that, then its time to jump ship to a new OS.

Funny becasue LTE is currently in the initial developing stages. It's very hard to find places that provide maximum LTE speeds. On my 4S I have 5mbits over 3G, which is speedier than some iPhone 5 LTE tests I've seen on YouTube....:D

Picked my Black 32gb up today and it's totally flawless. It looked like the edge was scratched but the marks wiped off straight away, the back really really looked scuffed but with a damp cloth the marks went and now there is no sign at all. Relief!

Report: Thousands at Foxconn plant strike over iPhone 5 quality control disputes

With delays and retail shortages reported by retailers and carriers worldwide for the launch of the iPhone 5, reports from today claim that pressure on Foxconn employees in Apple’s assembly factories has lead to a strike among thousands of workers. China Labor Watch (via Gizmodo) reported today that 3,000 to 4,000 workers at Foxconn’s Zhengzhou plant went on strike earlier today due to overtime demands and lack of training. According to the report, Foxconn has “raised overly strict demands on product quality without providing worker training for the corresponding skills.” This had led to fights between supervisors and workers, and ultimately the strike:

This led to workers turning out products that did not meet standards and ultimately put a tremendous amount of pressure on workers. Additionally, quality control inspectors fell into to conflicts with workers and were beat up multiple times by workers. Factory management turned a deaf ear to complaints about these conflicts and took no corrective measures. The result of both of these circumstances was a widespread work stoppage on the factory floor among workers and inspectors… The majority of workers who participated in this strike were workers from the OQC (onsite quality control) line.

The quality control concerns were apparently related to issues users have reported with scratching on the exterior of the iPhone 5:

It was reported that factory management and Apple, despite design defects, raised strict quality demands on workers, including indentations standards of 0.02mm and demands related to scratches on frames and back covers. With such demands, employees could not even turn out iPhones that met the standard. This led to a tremendous amount of pressure on workers. On top of this, they were not permitted to have a vacation during the holiday. This combination of factors led to the strike.

Last month, Apple Marketing Senior Vice President Phil Schiller responded to a customer regarding the issue. He called the scratches and chips “normal” for any aluminum product.

It is unclear at this point, how the strike might affect supplies of iPhone 5 going forward. However, late last month, Apple continued experiencing shortages and delays for the rollout of the device to 22 new countries. While yield issues with the device’s in-cell display technology was originally thought to be behind production delays, reports in September confirmed supplier Sharp began mass production after weeks of delays. China Labor Watch said today “multiple iPhone 5 production lines from various factory buildings were in a state of paralysis for the entire day.”

Works fine for me......better to have less people on LTE anyways.

what week is it from? is it AppleCare replacement?

btw, heard iPhone 5's are now shipping for November if you place new order

Received a white box replacement that appeared flawless in the store. Unfortunately is has a super tiny thin scratch on the rear side chamfered edge. Much better than my original so I'll keep it. Interestingly enough, the Genius said that I no longer qualify for the 30 day return. I'm going to get AppleCare+ to hedge my bets if the wear becomes extraordinary.

I bought my iPhone 5 at the Apple Store in Zurich Switzerland. The first one had very tiny scuffs. They immediately replaced it with a new one in a sealed black box. This one is flawless.

I've been wondering this one:

How is the metal plate near your lightning/Heaphone jack holding up?

A case protects the sides and back but that bottom plate is always exposed. I have pretty bad aim when plugging in headphones or power plugs in the dark so I'm constantly hitting metal to metal but I have no scratches at all down there. But how about everyone else?

@BreakingNews: Foxconn denies reports of a strike at 1 of its Chinese plants making the iPhone 5; only isolated disputes, no stop in production - @Reuters

yeah right.....

Despite the number of legitimate complaints on this forum regarding both pre-damaged phones and those damaged easily after opening, you still cannot conclude that the iPhone 5 design & manufacturing processes are fatally flawed.

I believe this will turn out to be two problems that may be related. First, a manufacturing or packaging problem on a limited scope resulting in the big dings and scratches seen right out of the box. Second, an anodizing issue resulting in the easy scuffing a few people have experienced.

These problems need to be corrected. However, they don't indicate a total failure of design and the need to give up and skip an entire generation.

I've seen numerous black iP5s now (our two included) being used no differently than their predecessors without a single issue.
