I think apple should offer a service in the store where they recoat the sides of the black iPhone to anyone who has the scuffing issue

Or simply replace the whole unit since reapply coating and anodizing means they have to disassemble the whole phone, strip down the remaining color and reanodize.

So, why not bring the whole thing to scrap and give you a new phone instead :D

Nonsense. They just issue Sharpies to all the geniuses. Would probably wear longer than the anodized anyway.

Replacement unit arrived. 1 mark on chamfer, 1 ding antenna, 1 stain spot on antenna.

All tiny and not really noticeable until thorough inspection. I'm only slightly considering keeping it because it seems to have a slightly better screen than my retail unit.

PS its a Week 37 model.

I've had 3, and all 3 have had completely different screens.

First was warm, with no tinting issues. 2nd was very cool looking but with yellow tint to the right, 3rd was yellow with dark orange tinting to the top and right sides.

Meanwhile I've used 3 different Galaxy S3's belonging to different people and all of them have had exactly the same excellent calibration, contrast, and quality. You couldnt tell them apart.

Basically, the vendors Apple use are garbage. My BlackBerry Playbook still has better colour, contrast, and uniformity than any iDevice.

----------

I'm also considering a 64GB iPhone 4S and iPad 2, which in total come to the same price as a single iPhone 5 64GB.

Choice between that + not having the hassle of switching everything from iCloud and still having Apple's ecosystem and the small issue of £95 worth of unused iTunes credit.

OR

Buying an S3 and Galaxy Tab 2 whilst having a hefty amount of spare change left over, but having to put up with the terrible Google Play store.

I don't really play games or anything demanding, but even basic news apps are trash compared to those available on iOS.

When I opened my first iPhone 5, right away I noticed that there was a chip on the tiny edge beside the screen. Fortunately, I was at the Apple Store and right in front of one of the employees when I opened it, so they saw it right away too. Unfortunately, however, that one was their last one in stock..

They did end up offering to hold one from their next shipment, which came a few days later. I inspected this one at the Apple Store again and didn't notice anything. When I got home though, I noticed that there was a tiny scuff right above the antenna on the right side of the phone.

Thought about it. Worried about it for about a second. Then decided - Screw it.

Note: My phone also has the rattle. When tapping the back near the top half of the phone especially. It's the camera. That's how it was with my iPhone 4S, and I even went to the Apple Store to complain about it, but she showed me hers and it did the same thing. So again - screw it.

Just a note... I know what you all mean but the sides of the iPhone 5 are not an antenna band. It's just the side of the phone. The iPhone 5 does not have an antenna band. The antennas on the 5 are behind the glass windows on the back.

The rattle is perfectly normal. I don't know why people are trying to say its a fault.

Every camera phone I've owned (with auto focus) has rattled when tapped or shook firmly, always from the same area. The only device that hasnt rattled was my BlackBerry Bold 9900, and that did not have auto focus, so not sure if its a coincidence or normal.

That is not aluminum.

That appears to be a 2007 era Macbook Pro and the keyboard/palm rest part is plastic with a silver coating of some sort on it. By the way, mine never wore like that nor have I had any wear issues at all with any of the silver aluminum Macbook Pro or Air models that I own. I'm guessing that kind of wear comes from some abuse.

Just sayin'... :)

Now the finish on the new iPhone 5 may be a different story. Only time will tell...

Are you really saying that Apple Part #: 922-7184 isnt anodized aluminum on the wrist wrest? It would be pretty funny if the "aluminum series" macbook pro's were infact plastic with "a silver coating of some sort". THAT WOULD BE RICH! Did I just get trolled? You cant really believe that right, I mean the horror of that reality is just too overwhelming.

My first iPhone 5 had scuffs everywhere, and a defective chamfer I could scrape off with a credit card. My replacement came perfect and I cannot scrape anything off.

My advice is to talk to sales. I ordered from Apple.com and my replacement was here less than a week later, I did not have to put a hold on my credit card, and it was much less painless than my last 2 AppleCare experiences.

Under no circumstances should you be able to scratch off the anodizing with your nail or a plastic credit card. Bad adhesion from poor prepping.

I am currently waiting on my third iP5. My pre-ordered one has a major ding on the front right chamfer and some bad scuffing on the back (Week 37). The replacement they sent me was better (Week 38) in that the damage was less noticeable but was much more prevalent around the entire chamfered edge. I didnt even power the replacement up...opened box and inspected phone...place back in UPS box and re-tape.

UN****ING acceptable i cant belive the **** Apple is doing. What week is the second replacement?

Not sure. I didn't bother to look. Just threw the POS back in the box and sent it back.

I called Apple yesterday to get my 3rd replacement. They said they normally have to get the replacement back (they did on my 2nd) but since this is ongoing they'd make an exception and go ahead and send me a new one. No tracking number, and FedEx came and went today. Called back and they have no idea what I'm talking about. Sitting on hold still while they figure this out. I've several hours on the phone now about this issue. I've about had it.

Second iPhone I got now with this 'gap' between the rubber band.

Are these gaps normal or should they be replaced?

Upload fails, so have to do it with a link:

Me,15 calls later and about 2 days of time with them on the phone and I still have no replacement iphone 5. Now without a phone till they get that phone back with their Slow shipping service for returns. :/
