I usually take care of my stuff, specially my car and gadgets. My black iPhone 5 came with two barely visible silver scratches on the border of the Aluminum. My phone is the thing I will use most and carry all the time, no matter how much I care for it it will get scratched and the first scratches will hurt. After months of use my iPad 3 doesn't have a single scratch and my year old Macbook Air either, after more than two years my 3GS only had a few minor scratches none on the screen.

For some reason I think the black iPhone 5 will look cool with a natural worn look, like a pair of worn black boots or old pair of jeans. As long as it's clean with no scratches on the glass and no major scratches on the back aluminum plating. Here's a quick photoshop on how that may look:

The rattle is perfectly normal. I don't know why people are trying to say its a fault.

Every camera phone I've owned (with auto focus) has rattled when tapped or shook firmly, always from the same area. The only device that hasnt rattled was my BlackBerry Bold 9900, and that did not have auto focus, so not sure if its a coincidence or normal.
I know it's normal. Just had to check.

Yeah why not?

Would you have a scuffed iPhone ?

Sure. I don't expect the phone to remain flawless forever. Re-anodizing it means stripping the phone apart. They might as well give you a new one. I don't fault anyone for wanting a perfect phone from the start (it should be this way) but it will eventually scuff if you leave it naked. Just like every ipod since the 1st gen with a mirrored back, it was eventually going to scuff/scratch.

I went to collect my reserved black 16gb from the apple store tonight, purchased it at 6.45pm, got it refunded at 7.10pm. it had a few nicks and scuffs on the bezel and jack socket, one of the nicks was on the front of the bezel facing you when you looked at the phone and it would have bugged me every time i looked at it.

Besides that i thought the overall fit and finish was fairly poor anyway, nowhere near what i have come to expect from apple in the eight years i have been using their products, every other product i have ever purchased from them has been perfect.

They had absolutely loads of 5's on display and everyone i looked as was in poor condition, this is simply not good enough from apple and i hope they get thousands of returns to teach them a lesson, i think they have tried too hard to make it lighter and took away the quality, the white one looks very cheap indeed. i wouldn't expect this from a £100 phone never mind a £530-£700 phone.

I travelled 78 miles in total to get this phone tonight.

Shocking, apple want shooting.

I have decided to give up with the 5, even without scuffs i don't think it is going to wear very well anyway, i have ordered a 4S instead, i am currently using a 3GS so it will still be an upgrade, some people say quite a bit of an upgrade.

Silly human... should have ordered a 5 sold it for full price and bought a "like new" 4S for half the price.

I've got a week 39 phone and there is a micro nick near the speakers and the band is unpainted near the top left portion of the antenna. Other than that I'm very happy. I used a sharpie and its fine now.

Apple should put that photo up on their website so people can't complain when their new phone comes in scuffed. They can just say it was pre-scuffed as it shows in the pic.

Very interesting read, probably an explanation to what's going on

what are you on about?

I bought the 5, took it back for a refund then bought a brand new 4S off ebay for a very good price, why does that make me a silly human.

i had the white iphone 5 and returned it on the 13th day. It nicked near the power button and another nick was near the volume button. I had the phone in an incipio case from the time I purchased it.

I would of kept it if I purchased it for $199. But I paid $649 to preserve my unlimited data... definitely not worth it. I'm sticking with the 4

time to take stock folks. no more screaming about the .0025mm nick in your phone. someone somewhere has a 25mm gash on his face because of it.

This news wont change my point of view at all, when I am willing to pay almost $1980 (total cost of everything under 2 yrs contract with carrier), I expect the phone that I buy should has no scratches at all when it comes out from the box (never had any scratches with all my new IP4 and 4S). I will keep exchange until I get what I paid for, or it will be refunded after 30th day

You may not agree with me but " People are all different so Respect the differences"

My phone came with two noticeable nicks on the front bezel, which I noticed after I got out of the store. Apple store refused to replace mine, since it is within the manufacturing specification and since it is a perfectly working phone. They even said that this is normal and the phone will scratch anyway. I thought it would be OK then, but it bothers me more and more since it just stands out whenever I am using the phone and these are pretty big marks on the front.

I will try to get it replaced, and it will be my last effort. If they still refuse to replace it, I will just return it and live with another phone even though I really like the phone. It's really frustrating to feel bad whenever I use my phone with that shiny nick right next to the screen.
Did anyone have a similar experience with the apple store? Is there some way I have to talk to these guys at the genius bar? Any advice or tip will be really helpful, because there is a part of me that wants to really keep the phone if possible.

" It was reported that factory management and Apple, despite design defects, raised strict quality demands on workers"

despite design defects......how can these poor workers even do their job....very sad

week 38 white AT&T - replacement damaged

saw large nick on side, did not even look further or remove plastic

Return it and just buy it again?

They really said it will scratch anyway? I'd be fuming.

I want to exchange my launch day phone for one without damage, but I don't want to keep exchanging, for a $950 phone, this isn't acceptable, I want my phone to be in perfect condition!

Did you use an upgrade or buy it full price? I interpreted it as you used your upgrade and bought a 4S.

it's stupid because regardless of how fast and cosmetically "awesome" you think the 4s is it doesn't support LTE which is the main point of even using the iphone 5. Been reading this forum since the release and I cringe when people try and tell themselves the 4s is a superior phone. we're not talking about a rolex or something where only cosmetic changes are upgraded, the entire innards of the phone was upgraded, the 4s technology is already old, why spend any money in last year's inferior model which is nosediving in becoming obsolete?

Totally understandable, and I sympathize as I've had to get a replacement already, but it looks like we either have to accept the phone for its flaws or return and go elsewhere. Nothing they can or will do at this point except replace the phones or take a return. Wanting the phone to be perfect won't make it so.

Anyways, I hear Foxconn is tightening quality control on the phones. Maybe better phones will be out in a few months.

Please read my post properly, i said the 4S was an upgrade on the 3GS not the 5, i know the 5 is a superior phone thats why i bought one, i only returned it because of the scuffs etc. I am only a light user and the 4S will still be an upgrade for me and as for LTE i am in the UK and we are quite a bit behind you in terms of LTE.

Your are only causing yourself to cringe because you cant read properly.
