I am concerned about this scuffing issue, I have OCD (I go to a psychologist weekly) I will be putting my phone into a case with a zagg full body skin as soon as I get the phone, should I expect my phone should be fine? I don't really like the way the white one looks (find it too distracting and un-uniform). But if my black 5 scratches in the first 30 days even with these measures put in place, I will probably get a white one anyways.

if a slice of bread drops on the floor or gets squished by something, and you refuse to eat it because of this- then is that the breadmaker's fault, or yours?

"I shouldn't have to use a plate to eat bread so this slice is defective and cheap!"

Really, Apple fixed all of this nonsense with AppleCare+. Throw your iPhone 5 on the ground, give them $50 and it never happened.

I don't know if that's a "fix" since you have to shell out additional money to avail yourself of (what should be) basic coverage. Kind of like "rust proofing" a car or whatever nonsense salesmen used to upsell people with.

I have home insurance that covers everything up to £2000 per item from "accidental" damage, so if I decided to throw my iphone against a wall, I will get a brand new one.

I have to pay £100 advance fee, and my insurance goes up a little, but so far it's worth it.

My kid when she was younger poured a whole cup of milk over my macbook pro, I had a new one within a week

however I really do look after my gadgets, I haven't broken any of my iphones , they are in mint condition even to this day , but the insurance is there for a reason!

Sure I might get a screen protector and a case, but I won't be too worried as I am very careful , especially since I worked hard for the money to pay for it.

My white 4S has scuffs on the aluminum band...not sure what the big deal is suddenly

Because the silver band around the iPhone 4S does not show the silver scuffs near as bad. However, on the 5, the silver scuffs would show up horribly bad, as everything on the phone is black.

I agree, I have scuffs on my 4S as well, but they don't bother me because you can't see them all that well. I could only image what it would look like with a black band.

Antenna gate kept me from buying an iPhone 4 for a long time. Then, for me, it was a complete non-issue. So I am not worried about this either. I am really careful with my toys!

I am not too bad with OCD, but I'll be damned if ill put up with the black scratching off with normal usage. I take care of my phone and I don't like scratches. Especially when they reveal bright silver underneath.

this worries the crap outta me.

if im paying $1000 and within several hours it's going to show signs of wear and tear, ill be heading straight back to apple for a white one.

For many people It's not just a phone, it's an investment.

NO this is not an investment, get that out of your head

Investment: An asset or item that is purchased with the hope that it will generate income or appreciate in the future.

I purchased my iPhone 4 for $300, net cost $100 after selling my iPhone 3.

I will be selling my old iPhone 4 for $200 and paying $100 net cost for my iPhone 5.

I've seen Anal/OCD member who spent hundreds of dollars on cases/screenshields/sides etc all in the name of "RESALE VALUE!!!!"

I'm sorry but I find these people stupid. Why are you paying so much money for a quality/thin phone when you never get to see it. Instead they cover their phones in inferior materials just so the next guy that gets the phone can have a "slightly less used" phone ?

A cellphone is a tool that is meant to be used, it's not a collectors item and it's not an investment.

Well this kinda makes the choice between the black and white easier... I did see a nice deal on eBay for a case and matte screen protector.

Every Apple product has the ability to be scuffed. Every one of them. Don't put your iPhone in the same pocket as your keys and you'll be fine.

problem I have with that is you spend $100 for for AppleCare+ then you spend $50 on replacement. Now if you didn't have the service you pay $200 flat($50 more). I only see this as worthwhile unless you think going break two phones. :apple:

Have there been any new reports of all this "skuffing?"

White or black looks jacked up if you drop it on concrete or get a deep scratch. However, it is unreasonable if the black iPhone 5 finish deteriorates during normal operation and use.

I'm definitely not one that has bought numerous cases for my iphone4, matter fact I've been using the speck hd from the free case program since I bought my iphone a couple years ago. My question is though, how does a case hinder your use of a cellphone in anyway? I guess the only point you may have might be if the case messes with the camera's flash but other than that?...

Using my iPod Classic that was purchased in 2007 and has been well used since, I'm not too worried. This thing has been through a lot of abuse and the only parts where the anodized black faceplate are damaged are on the very sharp corners. Hopefully that well designed chamfer on the corners will keep the "edge marks" from happening quite so easily.

This is the same as mine, although mine is only 18 months old!

This may be a stupid question! If i use my black iphone for the 30 days and decide i want to switch to white within the 30 days is that even possible?
