I really don't think so. Apple has been handling and designing this phone for a while now. Somewhere along the way I would think someone would have noticed the black chipping off easily. I just can't see them not fixing it knowing that the media would make it a top story all over the world, and customers would NEVER put up with it. Just can't see it being as bad as people made it out to be. And not too mention there hasn't been a single mention of this happening from anyone else. ..Id be SHOCKED if this turns into an issue…We'll all know in a day and a half.

All things will wear if not protected in use. That's life.

You carry something like a phone, it will hit zippers, buttons, rings, desks, get dropped...**** happens.

The first person that says "My phone is scuffed, and I didn't do anything" is a damn liar and should be punched in the throat. It just doesn't work that way.

If you want a pristine phone, get a case, if you want to go au natural, then learn to live with blemishes. End of story.

People don't seem to realize here that putting an Apple like bumper on the phone may actually make it more conducive to scuffs and scratches along the band. Grit and fine parties inbetween the bumper and band will rub. If this scuffing/scratching issue actually is confirmed to be a problem I would think the only thing to prevent it would be some kind of spray treatment that layers on a non-glossy protective coating.

You are entirely right, people are overreacting. It will all be fine if you handle your device properly.

How did you avoid the chrome surround getting scuffed with bumper on it?

Both my wife and I have the bumpers on our phones and they are scuffed from dirt and debris getting trapped inside...

I use the clear protectors on the front and back too, just took them off, glass is perfecto...

Made sure to clean it once a week. I had a bumper on a 4 and it looked like **** after a year. My 4s that I owned since February didn't have even a blemish from the bumper. For the most part I don't put my phone in my pockets which is where most of the dirt gets worked into the bumper.

Anodized aluminum surfaces will scratch quite easily. There is a certain family of firearms, specifically a rifle, that is quite popular amongst gun enthusiasts that has an anodized aluminum receiver. They scratch very easily. This of course speaks nothing to their strength and durability. Now, I'm sure there are ten ways to Sunday to anodize something so I'm not sure what process Apple used and if it's superior to other anodized applications.

I have a launch day 4s that is in 100% mint condition. And I sometimes use a very lo-pro case or go naked. I am in no way rough on my phone and I take care of it. no wear marks at all. And if thats the case with the 5, i am totally cool with it. But if the black scratches off like a lottery ticket, people are gonna flip out. Or if it "wears" off with normal use, thats not acceptable either. NONE of the other 5 iPhones I've had, had any type of finish that scratched or wore off easily. And I certainly won't accept it now. It'll be a huge disaster if this coating isn't there to stay. And I understand that drops, scraping it across a wall, etc don't count.

Um, go watch the keynote. Mansfield covered the innards, Ive the case manufacturing. Mansfield's job is getting all that technology to fit inside Ive's slim case. ;)

Ives did cover the manufacturing but that does not mean he is responsible for it. Mansfield is hardware engineering - since neither of us work for them I guess we don't know who owns it but neither of them could, IMO, miss something so important and basic. It was impressive to see all the precision in the video.

No way would Apple release a phone that easily scuffed. That's the last thing they want - "scuff gate". No doubt there was extensive testing done before they decided to go with this manufacturing process. These guys do this for a living yet there are people here who seem to think they know better?

Yeah I don't know who does what exactly but I'm guessing Mansfield is more responsible for the insides than the case I've heard that Apple designers spend most of their time at the factories in China. When Ive was describing the unibody in the Objectified film he said they spend most of their time designing fixtures for the different machine stages. But I agree with you, I have a hard time believing they would let a phone on the market that scuffed so easily. It would be a PR disaster. I don't understand why some are assuming the worst here.

Photoshop job you can tell.

"Ditching the glass back and reducing the thickness of the glass panel on the front has affected the design of the metal band around the edge of the iPhone. It is now chamfered and while that looks pretty, we've already noticed that on the black model the edge has started to wear, revealing the shiny silver aluminium metal underneath the "slate" coloured coating and, indeed, we've witnessed it on two separate models, ruling out a fluke manufacturing error.

These small scuffs will catch the light and make the phone look visibly worn. We suspect that it won't be as noticeable on the white model because the metal edging is silver, so that's worth bearing in mind when you come to order your colour choice."

hahaha, AT&T hasn't done me wrong actually. There is so much hate on here for them its quite surprising since I've had nothing but a good experience with them.

As far as getting the largest device. I have a lot of music and movies.

NO this is not an investment, get that out of of your head

It can be if you look after your device, and I'm not talking in an overly protective way.

I purchased my iPhone 3GS 32GB & immediately put it into a slipcase from Beyza cases, just a standard leather case.

It had no other protection on it whatsoever & was used every single day of the 19 months that I had it.

I paid £169 for it on contract & when I sold it I received £240.

I then paid £169 for a 64 GB iPhone 4S.

I'm reserving judgement on this until I see whether the scuffs happen in the wild, so to speak, but if they do, this will affect resale values if people hold onto their phones.

By the way, although I didn't make money when I swapped from the iPhone 3G to the iPhone 3GS, I still made exactly what I paid out for the 3GS, the £170 as it was to cover the initial outlay.

definitely noticeable in that video. the whole sides are going to end up silver in a few months. :(

What are you talking about? I see nothing. What time mark is thus shown ?

Anyways, how is this different than the Al backed iphone 1 original back?
