1 - Its a phone. Its not indestructible. I don't think I've owned any product/object/physical item that stays pristine since day one. Especially if you carry it around everywhere you go. The iPhone 5 isn't special. It doesn't have some sort of force field. Apple cannot defy science....

2 - People haven't even started to receive their phones yet, and someone has already declared scuff gate... SCUFF GATE?!! Honestly, talk about people spoiling it for themselves...

Obviously this is not going to be an issue. Out of the millions of Iphones that have been made, so far only TWO have been found faulty?

No, out of the 20-odd or so that are in the hands of reviewers, two have already been found to scuff a lot. I do find that worrisome.

The other millions are still boxed up nicely right now so that doesn't say much about them being prone to this problem.

Personally, I'm now leaning towards getting the white one and perhaps in the future when spare parts become cheap to replace the front panel with a black one. Sounds like the ideal combination.

It's quite obvious now that people are seeing things that aren't there as they're assuming the worst and have convinced themselves the black phone will easily scuff.

There are no scuff marks in those two photos. One looks like a reflection (Jony Ive did say the process they use to cut the chamfered edges results in a mirror like finish) and the other looks like dust. Seriously people get a grip!

----------

I don't see anything wrong with that iPhone in the Stuff.tv YouTube video. Just reflections of the light bouncing of the chamfered edge. People do know the edge is diamond cut for a mirror sheen and isn't matte black like the aluminum back and sides right? It seems like people are trying so hard to find scuffing that their brains are actually making it up.

Yep nobody has the phone in their hands but we have scuff gate based on one review and now people are seeing things that aren't there. And yet if someone is skeptical that Apple would release a phone that could so easily scuff we're just blind fanboys drinking the kool-aid.

There's no proof as of right now that the Black model scuffs, but if it does, guess what?, I'll make sure Verizon's replaces mine if it becomes an eyesore.

Normal wear is one thing, but if it's just gonna rub off after just putting a case on, it's a faulty product in my eyes, and should be replaced. I care about this because I'm planning to sell mine on eBay for a profit two years from now.

To pay for the iPhone 6...

Customers should always be satisfied.

Hey guys: I have a MAJOR problem and I realize its the wrong thread and forum but maybe you can help anyway...

I bought a new car last week. I drive it no more than 60 miles a day. It has a SCRATCH!!!! I know right!?!?

I took it too the dealership (horrified) and explained that nothing used should ever show wear, ever, even if they used materials to make my car lighter instead of indestructible...

They looked at me like I was CRAZY!!!

The nerve right!?!? Am I right!?!?

Please help me... I can't sleep, I've called off work, and I stay in the garage with a magnifying glass 24/7 looking for more "defects".

Then... To make things WORSE... I dropped the magnifier on the car and it happened AGAIN!!!

Should I call the president? The national guard?

PLEASE HELP ME!!!

Well where you going to keep your catsup (or Ketsup for you high falutin types) packets then? Going to look kinda silly just standing there holding them in your hand all day long

I guess you're right. It's a lot easier to dip my fries when my pockets are full of catsup / ketchup. What was I thinking?

Thanks for all the help, and for proving my point about how entirely self centered and moronic everyone is being about this...

Read next time... LMAO

Guess you didn't realize I was playing along, ya?

For the Stuff.tv video you need to turn on 1080p in quality or you won't see it.

As for the engadget photos posted above those are reflections. Except for around the headphone jack. (Not the rim of it but next to it where the connector would rest.

It definitely looks like the anodized black coating wearing off to me.

ytank u ser no worez

gooby plz

On a more serious note, I doubt this will be a problem. People are just overreacting to a few people posting reviews. Seriously though, out of millions of Iphones that have been made, usually a bit of them are known to have defects.

If there is a legitimate defect with the black one, it will be havoc for Apple, because they have made alot (like I said millions)... Without a doubt in my mind they would not release a product that is "this" bad.

Besides, ANYthing will scratch eventually. If you take care of your device, dont throw it or grind it against anything, it will be fine. Heck just take 5 minutes to apply a body guard or a case and it will never scratch.

Wait... ANYTHING???

Not my Samysung Universe R! You should buy one of those. More GeeBees and indestructible because they copied NASAW!

It's The Next Big Thing!!!

It does look like that and, if true, would be very upsetting for many. I wonder if these sites use shared demo models for their reviews. From the still you've posted it looks to be in rough shape.

i might go hybrid and get a white one. replace the front with a black screen and button. get some carbon fiber covers for the back glass :D

I was wondering if these review units were initially used heavily at Apple well before being sent out?

How many people are going to have their phone outside a bumper or case anyway?

(I know it's not the point to assume people will put their phones in cases to avoid this. It shouldn't scuff so easily in the first place.)

Just saying. If you're dropping $200 to $400 on a smartphone (not to mention the monthly $70 or so for the contract plan), you're kinda stupid if you're not dropping another $50 or so on a protective case for the thing.

I'm a massive idiot then, because I don't use any kind of always-on protection. Just the raw, bare iPhone. The 4(S) feels so good in the hand, and looks so good, it's a real shame cover it up with protection that's useless once in the hand. It does need to be protected when not in use though (like when stuffed in pockets).

I simply use a sleeve (a ColcaSac). It's the best compromise. I've been using my 4 and then 4S like this for almost two years, not the slightess scratch, ding or anything on any of them.

But there won't have been millions sent out for reviews, and a few of the reviews all report the same issue.

Perhaps they were just holding it wrong ;)

Please show me the "few" reviews.
There is only one review that mentions it and that's it.
Pocke-lint and slash gear both mention the problem in their reviews.

A few other reviewers (eg. stuff.tv) have posted up close pics of the phone and never mentioned it being a problem but some people on this forum have noticed them.
