I like (and recently ordered) a black model. The reasons are the same as have been discussed in this thread. The all black model is sleek and sexy.

If the finish and edges quickly begin to wear, the all black model is no longer all black. The problem will only get worse over time.

Yes, it is a small problem if you plan on having a case or just plain don't care. However, I won't be using a case. I will opt for the model that was intended to not be all black--because the all black model can't deliver.

More Scuff-Gate evidence. iFixIt was able to make it happen!

See towards the bottom: "Step 29"

Look at how you worded that: iFixit was able to MAKE it happen. Look at their photos - it appears that they used a FRIGGIN coin to scratch it!! I can just see the idiots now, sitting around trying to scratch their phones to "confirm" this "issue."

Yep. The point is that, with extended use, the edge is going to be all jacked up--with or without a case. It will snowball from there.

There are already reports of it happening. Their tests bolster that position. I'm glad they accelerated the process a bit instead of giving me the 3 month recap before Christmas.

I wonder how well sharpie will stick to bare metal.

Some enterprising individual will start selling a black marker on eBay for $5 and call it the iPhone 5 repair pen...

I ordered a bumper AND a case. Hopefully at least one will arrive tomorrow along with my phone.

Guys, I have my black iPhone 5 here in front of me and can confirm the reports.

Yes, it scuffs easily and yes, it's silver underneath. I already have three small marks along the edges of the phone and they're very noticeable. I will probably get over it, but if you care more about it than I do, it's something to consider before you go out and buy a black over a white. Either that or get it in a case ASAP.

thanks, white for me!

Honestly, I can't believe they didn't cut first and then anodize it all.

It wouldn't have mattered in the long run.
When you anodize aluminum you run current through it and dip it in an anodizing solution.
The anodizing then "grows" on the aluminum.
It's similar to rusting.
The thicker the growth, the harder the anodizing.
When you chamfer an edge you end up with two edges.
And anodizing edges is always a problem because there is not enough surface area for the anodizing to get a good growth going and it will eventually start to chip.
Scuffgate should actually be called Chipgate.

So, you believe the problem would be compounded with more use and over time? Day 1 chips/scuffs can't be good.

of course one thing to consider is they all have a scuff problem

its just a lot less noticeable on the black

its still going to bother me on the white is what i keep telling myself

The scuffing looks like a failure of the anodization on the edges. As long as that is true, then the white shouldn't be affected, as the white model doesn't use anodized metal for the case, same as the 4/4S

Your phone is most likely on its way, check ups tracking reference. You can always exchange for white.

It is just "preparing for shipment". It still says that I won't receive the phone until Oct 5. :(

And I won't hold my breath on being able to get a white model during the iPhone rush season. The first served will be going to the new sales not the "I don't like the color" crowd.

I cant help but laugh at all of these people making numerous excuses to justify their black purchase, and make apple seem like not at fault here....

I am SO glad my black iPhone preorder didnt go through. I would be hating that I ordered a black one right now. Not down for this crappy build

Oh, it's definitely Apple's fault. Of course there was skepticism when the first reports came out- if I was the first person to own the iPhone 5, I could have thrown it against the ground as hard as I could and claim that the damage resulted from gently placing it on a microfiber cloth- on my bed. Point is, one report isn't a big enough sample size to make an accurate judgment. But when multiple outlets confirm the "scuffability" (one of them being iFixit, who intentionally tested the strength of the edge), it's obvious that it is a manufacturing defect.

But I don't think I'm making "excuses" to justify my purchase. Maybe I just don't feel like going through all the trouble to replace my iPhone right away, and I'm going to try living with it? I, nor the tons of other people that have preordered the black iPhone 5, could see the future last Friday. It wasn't an intentional decision to buy a phone with a defect. But it happened, and people will deal with it in their own ways.

the white model uses a natural anodizing that is matte silver, same as the unibody MacBooks. it will chip just like the black one. i feel like it's a toss up because the natural aluminum seems to be darker than natural ano, but lighter than slate ano.

Well, I guess this is essentially like the things I've done back in preschool.

We'll see how this goes tomorrow! I'm really trying my best to love the black iPhone, but hopefully Apple accepts slightly scratched iPhones for trade-ins.

Wow. Just came and found this thread.

Anyone know if you return a black model to Apple, how long until AT&T lets you get a white one?

I mean, how long does it take until they give you back your upgrade eligibility after a return?

White now seems like a no brainer.

Bummer. Oh well, at least this pushes me to finally try white.

Sure wish I had known to order white all along!

Well this tears it, first thing I am going to do when I get my new iPhone 5 is take it apart, sand it and have the aluminum rhino lined at the local truck shop. I will not be seen with a phone that has scuff marks, what if people look at it and they are all "eww I think that guy uses his phone, that's gross"?

they should of powder coated the whole phone

I feel you man. Always been a fan of black on black on anything. But, I just cancelled my black-backordered-pre-order in favor of a white one.

Upgrade eligibility was back within 10-15 minutes. I ordered through Apple for the black and again for the white.

The stores should take it back no questions within the 30 day period.

If that's the case, it's a shame. I'd still expect the silver to hide scratches better though.

I wonder if the flaking would be limited to the chamfered edge, or it would be possible to get the rest to flake as well. If it is the former, I'd probably just look into removing the anodization along the entire edge and get a metal "ring" around the screen. It'd look a bit better than scuffs.

my year old macbook pro's edging looks just fine...

the white one wont have these problems. im a little pissed i ordered black now. They should of tested this.

Who will be the first person to shave down the edge all silver all around?

curious to see what it would look like. chips look horrible

black/slate with raw aluminum band would be the best looking. Of course, it would have been to easy for them to just do that.
