this is worth a read. this same sort of thing happened to HTC...

I won't be in a black model long enough to keep my fingers crossed for this POSSIBLE, albeit highly unlikely, response from Apple. Furthermore, I wouldn't keep the black and hope that Apple comes to the rescue, but if you are willing to live with it, then go for it.

More likely response: free bumpers!

EDIT:

Also, the only way this gets the HTC-type response is if the Scuff Gate gains some traction with the tech blogs. Too early to tell - as the thing hasn't even been released. Funny when things come back into perspective.

so you can't go to an apple store and get it exchanged if you ordered it online.

what are all the people who want to exchange doing? how are you guys planning on getting this done?

It says that online but any apple store will take your phone back/exchange within the 30 days no questions. Just call your local store.

Prove it.

Not very likely at all. This is a cosmetic issue, not an issue of the phone's performance, meaning the phone is still useable, scuffs and all. The reason for the free bumpers 2 years ago was because the function of the phone was affected negatively, almost to the point of being unuseable.

I'm sorry with all the evidence at this point saying that the iPhone 5's black aluminum won't scuff with normal use is like saying that rape victims can't get pregnant.

It's not a matter of IF it will happen. It's a matter of WHEN. It's cool though as most of you will probably be fine with it. And as it seems it is just the edges that are rubbing off. You won't have solid chunks coming off of your phone like sheets of peeling paint.

And for the record. My black iPhone is "preparing for shipping" so it looks like I'm on the black boat this time around unless I magically get a white iPhone with my black pre-order.

Your phone is most likely on its way, check ups tracking reference. You can always exchange for white.

so if I don't buy from an apple store I'm screwed?

No, AT&T is 30 days as well, not sure about other carriers.

Does anyone know what Verizon's return policy is for the iPhone 5? Like can I return it even if I opened it and used it?

Take care of the phone, put a bumper or case on it and most of your problems will be solved. If you are going to put the phone in your pocket with your keys it's going to scratch. Use good judgement

But in all seriousness haha , i might just keep my black model and enjoy it and i will use my applecare+ if the finish comes off. i honestly don't think i would be happy with the white model.

I'm pretty torn. I joined this thread thinking everyone was exaggerating, but if the evidence is pretty damning before the release, than it has me really reconsidering this.

Of course, I have always owned white apple products and was going to think different this time because the black model looked so straight up sweet. but perhaps i shouldn't have messed with tradition and stuck to the white.

My wife got our first 5 and she wanted white. Hers arrives tomorrow. I'm hoping to order mine tomorrow and based on this mine will be white too.

i will put an alumunium coating on the painted edge on my new black iPhone 5 :D

I agree there is nothing to see.

Maybe this is better called 'false problem gate'

Nothing to see? There have been numerous examples posted throughout the 20+ pages of this thread. Why must the Apple user base always deny any issue or problem at all costs? It's OK to be critical of something. Justifying, covering up, excusing, dismissing etc. does not help a company get better.
