Nothing to see? There have been numerous examples posted throughout the 20+ pages of this thread. Why must the Apple user base always deny any issue or problem at all costs? It's OK to be critical of something. Justifying, covering up, excusing, dismissing etc. does not help a company get better.

This.

of course one thing to consider is they all have a scuff problem

its just a lot less noticeable on the black

its still going to bother me on the white is what i keep telling myself

I like (and recently ordered) a black model. The reasons are the same as have been discussed in this thread. The all black model is sleek and sexy.

If the finish and edges quickly begin to wear, the all black model is no longer all black. The problem will only get worse over time.

Yes, it is a small problem if you plan on having a case or just plain don't care. However, I won't be using a case. I will opt for the model that was intended to not be all black--because the all black model can't deliver.

More Scuff-Gate evidence. iFixIt was able to make it happen!

Lawsuit

Do you think Apple will pay for my pain and suffering? I mean, I waited up to pre-order, and now because of scuffs on review phones I can barely eat, sleep, or think straight....

It's really awful, and I don't know what to do. I have already called in sick for the next week just in case my phone comes "pre-scuffed" tomorrow.

If it doesn't, I plan on erecting some sort of force-field in order to make sure it stays that way. I have already kicked my son out of his room to make sure there is ample space to protect it. The DOD thought I was kidding, but they're sending someone out to help with the logistics anyway (force-fields are evidently hard to build... who knew?).

Crazy? Nah, I just have an entitlement to a product that never shows wear. I'm just that special. Apple should be ashamed. I am going to call some lawyers in the morning.

Should I sue for pain and suffering now? Or wait until we get a good class action going?

"Moral of this story: be careful, or get a case."

No doubt. However, a case should not be required just to prevent that from happening. If it is that easy, those same scuffs will occur under a case from dirt/debris. Most careful people wouldn't have that much scuffing in an entire year of normal use.

Good Lord. Really?? :(
Looks like it is real, but how bad is it? It looks like they used a coin. I think what everyone really wants to know is how easy is it to scuff the side? Obviously it isn't too hard, but will it scuff just from normal use (like setting it on a table and just holding it)?

I think they used a coin too. I think people are totally reacting as 1. no one has the phone yet and 2. most people are going to put a case on it and 3. the white will scuff the same way and show silver as well. I still think the silver will be visible next to the white.

Moral? Get the phone you want (because you really will be looking at the top MUCH more than you are looking at the side) and be happy you are getting one :)

I do want everyone to be happy but I think everyone is freaking out a little prematurely. :)

It mentions in the article that the sides of the phone themselves don't scratch easily...it's just the edges where the polished aluminum meets the matter aluminum is the part that scratches or comes off easily.

this is key. it's just the chamfered edge that scuffs, not the rest of the metal..

question is...is even that little too much?

Also consider how zoomed in that picture is. The small line of silver that may show up from scuffing it may be hardly noticeable when you look at the actual phone.

Well, the bright side of this is that I won't be too upset when my phone actually gets these scuff marks. I mean, at least we know what to expect beforehand so we can make proper arrangements (case, shields, etc.). I can imagine that many people that don't follow this kind of news like we do will be VERY upset when they discover their first scratches.

Knowing that my iPhone isn't going to look new for very long, I'm not gonna get too attached to the "fresh out of the box" feeling. Thankfully, it's a huge step up in every way from the iPhone 4 that I'm using now, so even someone like me with major gadget OCD will be satisfied- even with some minor imperfections!

Don't get me wrong, I really think Apple should find a way to strengthen the chamfered edge and issue replacements upon request. But I don't think that's a realistic expectation...

Hmm...who wants to endorse my new product?:

iPhone 5 scuff repair pen (black) ;)

i was thinking all the sharpie folks were crazy but if its JUST the chamfered edge, i wouldnt put myself past it lol!

that said, i think im going to stop by an apple store tomorrow and look at both models before i actually open my preorder.

Guys, I have my black iPhone 5 here in front of me and can confirm the reports.

Yes, it scuffs easily and yes, it's silver underneath. I already have three small marks along the edges of the phone and they're very noticeable. I will probably get over it, but if you care more about it than I do, it's something to consider before you go out and buy a black over a white. Either that or get it in a case ASAP.

Honestly, I can't believe they didn't cut first and then anodize it all.

I think there's some sort of weird hybrid process going on here. From the video, it made it look like they had this piece of anodized metal and then they added the chamfer, and it was a bright mirror finish on it....They must have done something to add the black just to that chamfered edge...

I cant help but laugh at all of these people making numerous excuses to justify their black purchase, and make apple seem like not at fault here....

I am SO glad my black iPhone preorder didnt go through. I would be hating that I ordered a black one right now. Not down for this crappy build

And now that I think about this...if it is JUST the edge, than this really WONT happen at all, in any form, to the white version, as it's chamfered edge is likely not colored at all.

So true. I'm basically set on switching to white. My order was pushed back to Oct. 5. Just need to cancel and re-order white. Or, find one tomorrow.
