Wow. Not sure why I didn't just listen and go with white :(

Just got to work with my phone and holy crap the scuffs are terrible. I'll wait a while for the frenzy to die down, but I definitely plan on returning. Sucks because the black looks absolutely amazing otherwise.

My guess is that apple will restrict returns if too many come in. They will come up with some criteria like they did for number of bad pixels on a screen.

You have to look on the bright side. Every time my phone gets damaged through Apple's fault I see as an opportunity for a brand new free phone. In this instance, you'll be getting a free phone every month.

Take them to the cleaners, buddy.

To your silly point before, what are his damages?

I'm sorry but those idiots really need to get a life. Look at all the iPhones on eBay with cracked front screens. These phones are not jewelry or toys for me, they are tools, I need it to work, not break, need to be replaced under apple care or some stupid crap like that. If my phone goes down because I accidentally dropped it as many do, then I am possibly out several iPhones worth of money until I get it replaced.

So I use the bumper, it flat out works, end of story. As far as the scuffs go, there is nothing you can do about this, it is anodized metal, it will wear with or without a case or bumper. So if I only get $50-$100 for the phone a few years down the road, no big deal, they are tools I write off of my taxes and the months of productivity I get from them is worth tens of thousands of dollars per year anyway...

Now having said this, I am not sure why Apple is not getting it that these phones have to be made to be durable, not just pretty to appease the people who love jewelry and live for the look of their phone, I think anodizing was a mistake and this is going to get ugly...

Nah... I'm just going to switch to white and wait a month. No biggie. Life goes on. I was leaning towards the white anyway. Had a really hard time deciding as the white looks awesome this time around. But I find the face looks better in black. So I'm going to go with white and put a clear skin on the back. I expect the chamfered edges to get small dings over time but they won't be noticeable.

Make sure you return it. Hopefully this is just a bad batch or something they'll be able to fix in the manufacturing process.

so is apple even acknowledging this issue or just keeping quiet and accepting returns

I think it is too early for Apple to comment. In my opinion, it would not be prudent for them to comment, without having a better understanding of what is occurring as we speak, to some people, lest they make a possible bad situation even worse, by rushing a statement.

I would like to see serial numbers for the really bad ones. I wonder If it is worse in phones first produced or ones latter down the road

You clearly don't understand the distinction. A "damaged" iPhone through Apple's fault is something Apple would replace. My point in response to your post was that the "damages" aren't something cognizable in dollars and cents, and thus something a court would be less amenable to find in favor of.

You're not a lawyer, so I wouldn't expect you to understand this. Go back to being a megaposter on some random internets forum.

Can you post a pic?

Exactly. Shills from the competition here to incite hysteria? Not outside the realm of possibility.

In the words of Public Enemy: don't believe the hype.
Christ, I'm one of those newbies that have only posted in this thread.

However, lets make it clear. I hate the competition and I think that someone would need to shoot me with a harpoon in the head for me to even consider getting a phone from the competition. I think that the S3 feels like a piece of plastic (plus I can't take Android) and I don't like the looks of the Lumia. I don't think any other phones could even be considered "competition".

I ordered my black iPhone 5 a few hours ago (it's time to upgrade my 3GS which has started to act up lately). I came home, saw the buzz about these problems and saw multiple links to this thread. And yes, I am concerned about the issues reported here.

Some people here seriously need to chill out though, thinking that people criticizing Apple when the most expensive consumer phone turns out to be scuffed on delivery in a very high percentage of the cases automatically are undercover Samsung agents or whatever... I consider myself an Apple fan but some people here seem to be in a cult or something.

The issue for me is this: Where I live, AppleCare+ is not available. The regular AppleCare doesn't cover scratches. I have 14 days to decide whether to return it or not.

If Apple were to acknowledge this and this were covered under regular AppleCare I wouldn't have to worry about it.

There are many more than a dozen people on these forums. But still, people get way too bothered with things like this whenever a new iteration of the iPhone comes out. Plus, it's going to get way worse with age. Get used to it.
Firstly not that many have it in hand yet. Large Numbers of those who do have the problem.
I received four and the two black ones are scuffed out of the box.

I don't know what you mean by "get over it". If I bought a new car, or new watch and it came with scratches I would insist on replacement or repair. If you wouldn't you are simply a bad consumer who should not give advice. Heck i can think of any $750 product i woudl not return if it came scuffed up..

Are you saying if your new macbook air came with scratches on it when you opened the box you should "get used to it"?

I received four iphone 32GS this morning. two black two white. the black ones are both scratched fro the factory as the pics the others have shown.

I sent pics and a request for a claim right away becasue I k now to stand up for myself. If you dont think the resale value, and therefore the direct value to the original buyer for scratched ones is less you dont know what you are talking about.

And when you take delivery of your next new car, I hope it is scratched so you can remember to not say anything and "get used to it" -- because all cars get "worse with age.".

For those that haven't received their phone yet, it might be prudent to film the unboxing, once the phone is received. That way, if there is any question as to when the alleged damaged occurred, there is video proof with the pertinent customer information in view.

Please, I understand much more than you can fathom. Since you're not a lawyer I don't expect you to understand either. Now, how can you be so sure I'm not a lawyer? ;)

that's a good plan, thanks

Not a bad idea, but I think there will be enough that they will have to acknowledge the issue

If is wasn't anodized, then it would have to be painted and that would just be lame and make no sense.

I've cerakoted many weapons. You might call it paint, but its really an ultra durable finish. It looks great for one, and is damn close to bomb proof. It makes perfect sense actually if someone is so inept that they can't handle holding anodized aluminum for 5 seconds without marring it.
