Mine is naked and flawless. I was so worried about the finish, and while there's still potential for problems, I'm off to a good start. I was prepared for disappointment but after looking it over really well I'm going to hang onto this one and see how it goes.

I'm not sure if I'm more relieved about the finish being good or not having to go to the craziness that is the mall on an Apple release day. Probably about even. :)

My pre-ordered black iphone 5 is still 'out for delivery'. If I use the phone am I still able to return it within the return period for a refund? Or does it have to be boxed and unused?

A claim like this has nothing to do with apple care. it has to do with the law on the warranty provided without apple care. It is a returnable in exchange for new issue.

The pictures on the apple promotional and sales material don't show scratches. you received one out of the boxes with scratches. You already have a valid claim on repair or replacement with new.

Take a picture, make a claim today to Apple and your provider. It has nothing to do with applecare

But here's the thing: If I do this and if they offer to replace it: What if I get another "bad" one, one that might be potentially even worse? I don't want to end up having to exchange phone after phone after phone...

It's not like I can make a claim now and then within the next year at some point decide I want a new one, is it?

I'll most likely use this thing like I normally would for a week or so and then decide whether to get a replacement.

You can of course read the full and official refund policy on the Apple Store website... but yes... as long as it's in "like new" condition (mint basically) and you have all of the original packaging, manuals, cord, ear pods, etc... you can return it. But I'm not going to bother. I've decided not to even open mind. I'm just gonna send it back. New order for a white one is already "being processed".

Gently rounding off the sharp edges would've helped.

Makes you wonder whether they test "real-world" durability at all. They need some teenagers in their QA dept :)

Seriously, though, would a sharpie not work?
It would, but Apple would sue Sharpie for patent infringement on the iScruff.

And on a more serious note, as someone who has touched up things using a Sharpie, it doesn't show up as black under a light... more a purplish color.

If there was an easy way to do it I would just bead blast the whole thing to a brushed aluminum look and not even worry about the black. To do this you would need to take the whole thing apart and I'm not sure I'm up for that challenge.

Possibly.

If I had received the black model today, and it was damaged in a similar fashion, I would not be content to use a sharpie (although some may). I would return the phone for a different model.

It comes down to what each customer is willing to abide by, when it comes to purchasing products, realizing that unforeseen problems arise in mass production.

You call apple directly or go to the store to
Get the white model ordered?

I got my black iPhone5 hour ago, it had bit of scuffs near left bottom frame. Thank god I did open my phone at starbucks soon after and noticed it at once. I went to replace it with white model.

Oh well, I'm not angry, I expected it (thanks for threads like this) and I was mentally ready to switch to white model even before I got my black.

Mine just arrived, looked scuffed at first but all the marks rubbed off with a careful fingernail. I suspect most of the comments in this thread could try the same thing as the bits that came off look like manufacturing residue from the chamfering.

Actually, they'll probably charge for them after printing a picture of an Apple on them after forcing the Sharpie company to provide them to Apple for free and making the Sharpie company incur the cost of printing the Apple logo on them, all because they're Apple and will convince Sharpie it's good advertising.

What?
