Wonder what the results would be if "newbie" status votes were taken out. I'm still skeptical. I want to see results from longer time members. Not possible trolls.

Agree. Check on the posting history of these newbies and you will see many of them registered only to post on this thread and no where else.

I must say that the black ones are damaged out of the box. I wanted the black and after they opened two different black iPhones for me they were all bad so I went with White which looks great and no scratches. I'm guessing it looks like that because the light colour around the bezel. It's true, the black iPhone 5 are coming out damaged out of the box. Sorry folks. Expected more from Apple.

Thank you for your post, that is quite shocking to read.

I'm mid contract, otherwise I'd have been trying to purchase this model too. After owning three different black iPhone models (3G, 3GS & 4S), for the first time ever I am glad that I'm going to be waiting.

The scuffgate is REAL! The guy that stood in line with me had a scuffed up iPhone 5. I told him while we were in line that this was going on, but he insisted on getting black. Sucks for him.

His iPhone 5 was damaged out the box.

Just ordered a white one from the Canadian Online Apple Store. Expected delivery of October 24-30 :( Oh well. I'd try to get one at the local Apple Store but I don't think the brick and mortar stores sell the unlocked version. I'm pretty sure you can only get the unlocked ones from the online store.

I saw one in the Verizon store and saw the black iPhone 5. It looked clean all around and then I saw the white aluminium show through on the bevel edge.

It was not a scruff...but a deep gouge...I could feel it with my finger...just like if the phone was dropped and the SS edge of the iPhone 4 was gouged or glass chipped.

I wondered if someone did it with deliberateness! Probably a Samsung fan...

I really hope I dont have an issue on the black one I am getting in the mail today I would have ordered white if I knew this bs.

Whether it really does scuff that easily, remains to be seen.

However, Apple has a history of using camouflage covers throughout their secret field testing, and cases can hide or prevent problems with antennas, scuffing, etc.

Not sure how they could get away from using cases while testing. (Not that the secrets are being kept anyway.)

Yeah, but you would think of the millions being made at FoxConn, some would have been dropped, handled or just looked at, and this would have turned up.

So do you guys think Apple will do anything about this? I can't imagine them even admitting that something's "wrong"...

Wow 135,000 views with all the merged topics! I can only imagine how high this will get after one week.

Un, yeah. If they get returned phones because of scuff marks they'll have to do something about it. And if the display models get marked up then hopefully stores will report it back to corporate.

Black iPhone-Should Have Seen This Coming

I don't have mine yet in black. But man I should have seen this coming. I have a Spyderco Sage folding knife that is anodized silver on Titanium scales. It shows wear around the edges of the scales, and where the pocket clip rubs the side of the knife. As my knife collecting buddies say do you want to use it as a tool or keep it as a "Safe Queen". Keeping the iPhone5 in a safe isn't practical of course ;)

The knife is a tool, but I'm not quite of the mindset that the iPhone is a "tool" because many of us are drawn to it because of the sleek design. The Apple.com video about the iPhone makes me think of it as an electronic piece of art.

Having said that I should have known the black was going to show silver through when it shows wear. So I'm going to slap myself on the forehead and live with it. You really can't win, because putting it in a case is going to cause wear anyway. I've owned several iPhones 3, 3G, 4, 4S. Always cased. I'm thinking about going without case and look at the wear and tear on the black as adding character. Or maybe I'll go with Zagg on this one.
