I've got white 32gb version, at the very bottom above the speaker where the glass meets the white banding there is a very small chip under the glass itself. Plus something black between the screen and white banding on the top left corner & same black looking thing top right between glass and white banding.

These don't seemed to be finished off all that good. is anyone's back aluminum plate slightly raised where it meets the glass panels top and bottom or is it just mine.

On the phone to Apple technical support UK as i'm typing this, he said 22 minute wait everyone calling about iPhone 5. (wonder why)?

Fedex just delivered!!! :D My black 16GB iPhone is flawless! No scratches, scuffs or anything.

As a test, I tried to scratch my fingernail in an inconspicuous area like around the volume buttons and near the antenna rim and it did not make a mark. So I'm thinking (hoping?) it may not be as easy to scratch or scuff as some others are seeing or thinking.

I'm still going to continue to use it for a week as I'll be away anyway and if I notice it not holding up once I get back then I might exchange it for a white, but right now I'm thrilled!!!!!

If preordered and being delivered today from the AT&T website, what would be the best way to exchange for white? Can you just go to the Apple store? Do you think they have "exchange" stock to swap it out?

You bought it from AT&T so would have to return to them

I can see it now.

Lots of idiots that put their phone in their pocket with keys and coins, scratching their phone up all to hell, then running to the Apple store to return their phone and swearing up and down that it came that way.

My iPhone 4 (without a case) was always in my pocket and for 2 years it never received one scuff or scratch. So if it happens with my iPhone 5 it won't be because I'm an idiot it will be due to the poor materials used this time around.

So happy for you. Enjoy your new phone. :)

Perhaps there are some bad batches that got out and yours was part of the good batch?

People should start documenting which week their phone was manufactured according to the serial number. Then compare that to which phones have the scuffing issue.

You can of course read the full and official refund policy on the Apple Store website... but yes... as long as it's in "like new" condition (mint basically) and you have all of the original packaging, manuals, cord, ear pods, etc... you can return it. But I'm not going to bother. I've decided not to even open mind. I'm just gonna send it back. New order for a white one is already "being processed".

Thanks.

I have been considering doing exactly the same , but i'll see how I feel when I get it. I do like both variants, but the black one has the edge (no pun intended). Considering the cost of the phone this issue is not acceptable for me

Mine is flawless out of the box. It's beautiful. Very happy I got this one.

Just a suggestion: when people take photos of their phone to post can they wipe off any dust particles first? Sometime the dust can come across in photos like a blemish.

I've got a case that I really love but it only protects the side edges, not the top or bottom.
I've decided to stay with the case I have for now, it will probably get some scratches, and if it annoys me I'll buy a case that will cover them up.
I know resale value is an issue, but I want to be able to enjoy what I have rather than being focused on selling it a few years down the line..
However, this is particularly bad for apple who can't compete with others on innovative tech, and so now place all the emphasis on design, this and maps is a very poor show from apple.

My phone was delivered around 9:50 on a by 10:30..I opened the outter box, took pic and headed to apple store to exchange.

Scuff gate is all too real. I want no parts of it. Whew!!

If you want to go through mail return from Apple.com/store US, does anyone know details?

Do you simply return this one and wait on the return to process and then order a white one?

Or can they immediately setup a replacement white order for you?

That's a good idea. In the keynote video Jony Ive said this was their most complex and ambitious manufacturing process to date, so perhaps they don't have it perfected yet and there's a bad batch or something. Otherwise why would some have a perfect phone out of the box and others showing scuff marks?

Mine with a chip/dent in it was manufactured in August
