I also wonder if there is any trend regarding CDMA vs GSM models having scuffs, relating to when/where they were made perhaps?

Nah, once you go black you never go back :D

I've always had black phones

wait... if it's a manufacturing defect, wouldn't you want to wait until it's addressed before you get a replacement unit?

----------

So just call apple directly and order a new replacement? In white? That possible?

I don't see why not... you have x days to return/exchange. They're probably running out of white ones really quickly.

So FWIW I just spoke with a buddy of mine who runs a local AT&T store. I wanted to see if I could walk in and exchange mine for a white one if I have the problem (Still on FedEx truck) and he said that he sold a boat load of black today and didn't see one with the problem. He also said that he is completely out of stock so I would have to order one.

Just a heads up...might be useless information but

No, I'll keep getting replacements until it's right

I understand and agree with your point from an angry consumer point of view but logically, I think it would be less of a headache on your part to wait (assuming your next unit is chipped too) until apple/foxconn does something different to the mfg. process to correct the issue... who wants to have to keep exchanging things for the same defective thing over and over?

well, i got my iPhone 5. the thing is beautiful... except for the nice ding at the bottom of it. i took it out of the box, examined it, saw silver where there should be black.

damn. on the phone with my apple store now, on hold to talk with someone about getting another, in store, without having to wait in any line.

I wouldn't be surprised if Apple makes a change very soon to the producation process skipping the black anodizing and just using the same raw aluminum band as the white version. Less customer complaints and less production costs = win/win

except the PR fallout is a huge lose. but they may not have a choice depending on exactly how widespread this is. time will tell...

Played with 2 display models. One at V, one at AT&T. Yes, VERY tiny bits of wear, but, I scraped my sharp fingernail all over the black coating, particularly along the sharp chamfered part, I couldn't get anything to wear off, and I tried. In a few days, thousands of people will have handled and done their best to scratch the black finish off of display models. I'm betting they won't look all that bad, with the majority of the black staying put.

Personally I care far more about the buttons being firm and precise, than a minuscule bit of wear ill never see inside a case.

I agree, apple might have really screwed up by somehow missing this from a design standpoint, and/or be having manufacturing issues at the Chinese factory, and this is pretty clearly going to be a fiasco. They should have seen this coming, much like the antenna of the 4, but honestly, the finish doesn't seem that scratch prone to me. It seems to me, the little bits of wear or nicks people are seeing, were likely done during manufacturing and handling prior to shipping. So it might be the case that the finish will stand up fairly well, though the phone might arrive with some wear. Time will tell.

The only reason I'd exchange my blk one on the way next week, is if there are several dings, or, an obvious defect like dust under the screen, a loose or not precise home, mute, lock or volume button. A little edge wear isn't a big deal to me, and I'm actually fairly anal.

BTW, the gray aluminum on the back of the white model will show scuffs and scratches too.

Brand new iPhone 5 taken out of the box 5 minutes ago. This is quite disappointing...

As much as I would hate to have a scratched iPhone I will probably end up buying a full body sheet protector. I prefer not to use a case, it covers up the beauty!

And I am never going white. The border around the screen would annoy me too much.

God to know. But man out of stock already?

Business Insider now mention this as well, name checking the forum in the process;

UH OH: Looks Like The Pretty New iPhone Scratches Easily (AAPL)

Typical link bait. It's amazing that News Republic didn't link to the original article, where the guy used a SIM card tray to scratch the phone.

However, I am getting anxious now.

edit: It looks like they did link to the BI article, which mentioned the source.
