well, i caved.
i do think the black looks better (particularly with apps with a yellowish background, like maps & notes - the black just frames them better), but i ended up picking up a white iPhone.
i looked at my wife's old blue iPod nano, and though in general it is in great shape, the edges at the top and bottom show silver pretty much all the way around. granted, she didn't baby it, but i think it will be near impossible to keep the black looking mint, unless it is in a case 100% of the time.

Just picked up mine, and I am NOT happy. I have never used a case ever since I purchased an iPhone 4 because of how sturdy the glass really is. I mean, short of falling on concrete, my iPhone 4 and 4S have been through hell, and still look pristine. I figured that since Apple made such a durable product last time, surely the next iteration will be even stronger? So I opted NOT to buy a case yet. (the AT&T store selection wasn't great). I just got home to do some homework, and simply from gently placing my phone onto the side of my macbook pro while it charges and I type, it has a small, scuff! And it's not one that will "wipe away", it is PERMANENT! Yes, it's small, but still, I GENTLY placed my new phone where I've been putting my old phones for almost 2 years!

Look I attached a pic

Typical link bait. It's amazing that News Republic didn't link to the original article, where the guy used a SIM card tray to scratch the phone.

However, I am getting anxious now.

edit: It looks like they did link to the BI article, which mentioned the source.

It was me that posted a link from News Republic, that's just the app I happen to use and think it's pretty good.

The original article was from Business Insider. Not trying to inflame opinion here, merely thought the article might be interesting to someone, especially as it mentions the forum.

I agree with you. Nothing directed at you, or your intent. Just not a fan of BI :p

I retract my previous statement.

After removing the plastic and looking at the phone, the back chamfered edge has about 7 places where it's silver. Looks as though the "paint" has flaked off. It's not noticeable unless you are within several inches of the back and are specifically looking for it.

Doesn't bother me right now but confirms to me this is going to be an issue later on. Steampunk phone - here I come.

So I apologize if this has been answered elsewhere, but how would I go about exchanging my online AT&T order for a white one? Do I call or go to the store?

The funny thing is, Apple could have just kept the back the same color as the white one. This slate could have been a third option.

The really funny thing though, people did NOT appreciate the glass enough. The glass on front and back was genius. Glass holds up so much nicer. It was really the greatest design ever.

Ouch... HALF of all the phones on this forum were either scratched out of the box or are scratched within a few hours

These "-gate" problems are usually overstated, but this is... wow.

I agree. I feel as though it's not useful for me to even open my black one when it arrives. Oh I so wish something had pushed me to the white one, but I never even considered it. Now I will likely be waiting several months on return and new order of a white one.

How did you come up with that figure?

Mine has excess glue around the back glass panels, is stuffed in 2 spots and has 2 dents.

I was able to clean the excess glue with ronsonol and a small needle. As for the dents you can't really see them but the scratches you can see from at least 2 feet away.

Head to an apple store. I waited about a half hour in line to exchange my black one. I didn't even open it. I held the black one in the store and it is indeed sexier, but I can't deal with te flaking issue crap.

Yeah after double checking mine a second time, I had quite a bit of glue to rub away just above the headphone jack.

Have a tiny tiny dent on the corner and then there's two black "smudges" around my antenna. So weird.

Week 34 manufacture (August)

Flawless

You guys clearly don't understand and are missing the point of this discussion. Whether it has a ding out of the box, it will show this wear in a very short period of time. That is a problem.

That is not proven in any way only 8 hours in

Mine is flawless, 64GB unlocked Apple.

Week 38.

I'm officially leaving these gate forums until things calm down. You're becoming OCD over something so trivial. If its scuffed, return it and get a white one, or put it in a case.

What's most disturbing to me is the extremely high percentage of phones with out of box dings and scuffs. That just shouldn't happen. Ever.

Just got home from work after getting worried sick reading this thread.

Box was dented badly.

Screen plastic had massive slash 1inch across screen.

Removed plastic

Flawless phone

Phew!!
:D

Ps the black on the side looks awesome, worth the trade off of scuffing in long term imo

This will likely be the worst cosmetic issue in iPhone history. People are going to have black metal flakes on their hands, in their pockets, on their furniture. That has to be the worst finishing ever, even worse than a gold-plated $20 fake Rolex.
